FAQ s for Fran Mycek, General Manager An interesting question came up during the Jr. Club Competition this year. Though it has nothing to do with the building itself, it has a lot to do with another PSC&HS tradition that has been around for a long time though little is known about it. The subject? Ribbons! Before there was the Basic Skills Program, the PSC&HS administered the Ribbon Program. As the kids passed their levels of skating, they were awarded ribbons. Each level of skating had a specific color ribbon. This ribbon program was exclusive to PSC&HS, the question is, where did the ribbons come from?...barbara Camp. Barb and her family became members in 1965. (Barb and Bob Camp were very active members of PSC&HS over the years with both committees and Board positions.) Barb took over the job of making the Jr. Club ribbons in the mid-1970s. Besides the skating level ribbons, she has also made Club Competition ribbons since 1981 when they began awarding them for the competition. After approximately 37 years of ribbon making, Barb has just recently resigned this position. However, she leaves us with almost 20 years worth of ribbons for future competitions! In addition to a good supply of skating level ribbons! Thank You Barb for helping to make our Junior level skaters so proud of their achievements! While we re on the subject of Barbara Camp, another little bit of history many do not know is that Barb is the Honorary Editor of the PSC&HS TWIST, our monthly newsletter. Barb was putting together the TWIST since the 1970s. Thanks Barb for being a devoted, terrific and dependable member, supporter, friend and volunteer of PSC&HS!! PSC&HS President E-Mail Address Do you have a concern, suggestion, recommendation, etc. to share with the PSC&HS President? You can e-mail your thoughts to: PSCHSPresident@comcast.net and your message will be viewed by the Club President. MEMBER/GUEST SUNDAYS Do you know someone who is on the fence about skating and/or joining PSC&HS? Member/Guest Sunday is the perfect opportunity to win them over! 1:00-3:00 pm during the family session Bring those might be/might not be interested skaters to PSC&HS on Sunday and show them what we have to offer! (There are no guest fees or skate rentals fees on Member/Guest Sunday sessions.) Membership, trial membership and Learn to Skate information will be available for your guests. Future Member/Guest Sundays are scheduled for: April 29, 2012 Save these dates on your calendar! Special Thank You to Art Tatios We send out a very special thank you to Art Tatios for restoring the two pictures of Dick Button and Scott Hamilton that are now hanging in the Lower Lounge. He did a marvelous job! THANK YOU ART!!
Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club 150 th Celebration The Philadelphia Girls' Rowing Club graciously extends an invitation to all members of the Philadelphia Skating Club & Humane Society to join in the 150th celebration of the historic boathouse, #14 Boathouse Row, located along the bank of the Schuylkill River. Just 150 years ago, #14 Boathouse was built by PSC&HS members and used as our first clubhouse. The building project was financed by stock subscriptions and solicitations. William S. Andrews, an architect and club member, drew up plans for the building and alterations were later made by city architect J.C. Sidney, also a club member. The final cost of the building...nearly forty-nine hundred dollars! When river skating became too dangerous and with the development of artificial ice, PSC&HS looked for a future home for indoor skating. In March 1937, the Club purchased land from Haverford College. One year later, a new rink was built in Ardmore and the facility has served as our clubhouse for over 70 years. PSC&HS maintained and leased the Schuylkill River clubhouse to the Philadelphia Girls' Rowing Club until 1962. Today, the Girls' Rowing Club continues to honor the rich history of the #14 Boathouse Row and looks forward to conserving this historic building. On June 2nd, the Girls' Rowing Club will hold a fundraising reunion at #14 Boathouse Row from 4 to 7 pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to support the history of PSC&HS, the mission of the Girls' Rowing Club and the historic architecture of Philadelphia's Boathouse Row. CHECK THE LOST & FOUND! Parents & Skaters: We have accumulated quite a bit of items in the lost and found. Please take a moment to delve through it to make sure none of the items belong to you or your family members. We will be donating all items left to a local charity at the beginning of May. Thank you! Philly Spirit - Adult Synchro The Philly Spirit adult team has completed its 2011-2012 competitive season marking the retirement of our current program. We are anxiously looking forward to the 2012-2013 season with a new program and costumes. We really hope to be able to move to a division that will allow us to qualify for Nationals and are asking our membership for support to help us do that. We need 3-4 additional skaters in order to make that division change. Please, adult skaters, help us get to Nationals!! To show everyone how much fun synchro is, we are opening our practices up to all adult skaters for 5 consecutive Sundays (April 22, April 29, May 6, May 13, & May 20) 7:30-9:30PM. For those 5 weeks you can skate with the team without making a season-long commitment. We are hoping that after the 5 weeks, you will want to join us for the upcoming season. The cost for entire 5 weeks is $75 ($15/week), plus a coupon, if you are not a 9-month member. Come see what all the fuss is about! For more detail and information please feel free to contact Ann O'Keefe at amokeefe@comcast.net.
Adult News Thank you to all who came to the Reunion Lunch. It was great to see so many friends enjoying themselves and reconnecting with skating friends. Thank you to all of you who have helped me one or the other this past year: Margarete Marvin, Portia Bonavitacola, Marcia Wiker, Robin Currie, Starr Simpson, Kathe Jacoby, Lucia Esther, Janet Rosen, Fran Hundt, Gail Lazarus, Frances Quinn and many others who cooked, baked, cleaned up. Thanks especially to those that have enthusiastically embraced adult skating. Keep it up! See you on the Ice! Charlotte Martin, Adult Committee Chair Farewell This is so hard to say. I have taught here at PSC&HS for many years and have lived in the Philadelphia area for over 50 years..yikes! Many of you know that my husband and I will be moving to Richmond, VA at the end of May to be closer to family. Over the years, there have been so many people I have come in contact with and taught..and then teaching many of their children. There are no words to express how I feel..i believe that is unusual for me! It has been wonderful being involved with such a great club, which has become like a family to me..i will always keep up and stay in touch with the club and what they are doing. Being Director of Skating for the last eight years has been challenging. Working with the different Boards and all the Committees, so many different club members who care about the club.they are great volunteers! The club had great faith to hire me as director and my main goal was to make PSC&HS a better and more successful club in all facets of skating. I hope all of you realize what a unique club you have. Although I will continue to coach in the Richmond area, nothing will compare to PSC&HS. I want to thank the club for hosting a Farewell Party for me with the help of Regina Barr, the new Director of Skating and my daughter, Stefanie. Allie Hoffman and Cindy Peskin have also been involved with my students and other young skaters..and from what I hear, they are doing some special things for me. I will always treasure the memories from them and the rest of the club. Last but not least is the office crew, Mary and Diane, and Fran. We have had quite a ride for the past eight years. I would never have gotten anything done or at least in the appropriate amount of time without them. I will miss our morning chats..thanks so much for making my job so much easier. I will miss you all, but there is always email! I am looking forward to seeing many of you at my farewell party. Thank you everyone for all your help and support over the years.
