ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION REGION I DIRECTOR S MESSAGE It is hard to believe that summer is over already. It seems we were spared from most of the heat but Fall is coming at us with a vengeance. I am sorry that we had some problems with sending out our Summer newsletter. We are back on track now and we are repeating any of the items that were in the Summer newsletter that are still timely. Region One is going forward into the rest of the year with a positive attitude. We had a successful Region One Show this year and although our numbers were not up the compliments we received on a great show showed we were definitely headed in the right direction. Our Barn Fiesta and wine tasting events were very popular and I can t say enough about the wonderful people who worked so hard on our show. One of the ideas that we had that was in my Summer message was the idea of having a page recognizing our Region One members who were Champion, Reserve Champion or Top Ten at any of our National Shows. If you wish to be included in this list in the next newsletter, which will be in November, please send them to me at mah77@aol.com with a subject heading of National Results for Region One Newsletter. I have attended two more Board meetings for AHA and our organization is also going forward with a positive attitude. We have been reviewing and inputting to a new Strategic Plan. The committee drawing this up is headed by Region One s Nancy Harvey and we should be proud of all of her hard work. Registration numbers have been down but this is true of all breeds. The numbers for our National Shows have all been up so that is great news. Our AHA convention this year is in Lexington, Kentucky. It is one of our last hosted conventions for a while because we go back to Denver for the next three years. Region 14 is working hard to make it a great one. We will have a special night at the Arabian Horse Galleries on Friday. If you are planning to attend, you can find all of the info on the AHA web site. We will soon have a new Region One Directory thanks to the hard work of Barb Dubois. Our last one is dated 2007-2008. This will be something really welcomed by all of us. Our September 28 th Region One meeting will be back at Pat and Oscars in Temecula. Remember you are all invited even if you are not a delegate. Just make sure you make reservations with Mimi Gaffey. Details are in this newsletter. I hope to see you there. ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION REGION I DIRECTOR S MESSAGE : from the Summer publication By the time you receive this newsletter many of you will have just returned from Youth Nationals. We have not had it in the past, but I think it would be great to have a page recognizing members of Region One who have had Champion, Reserve Champion or Top Ten at any of our National events. Please send your National Show results to Mimi Gaffey at gaffey@cox.net. Since the last newsletter I have attended the AHA Board meeting in Denver in May and will soon be leaving for the next one at the beginning of August. I would like to share briefly some of the highlights of the May meeting. Stan Morey reported that we currently have 275 AHA judges of which 157 are National and Regional Judges and 118 are small and large R judges. There are 126 Show stewards. We were encouraged to try to use small r judges at our one day shows. AHA hosted the National Pedigree Livestock Council meeting this year in Kentucky and had a very well received reception at the Galleries. As of the May meeting Debbie Fuentes reported that we had a 5% decline in purebred and a 28% decline in Half Arabian registrations. There was also a 5.4% decline in membership. By our next meeting it is hoped these figures will be better. We had two representatives of USEF come and speak to us on the 12 hour drug rule and the collapse rules that are being considered. Our own Nancy Harvey presented to us the first part of the new Strategic Plan. She is the head of the committee and doing a great job. AHA is currently offering a Registration Amnesty to try to get more horses registered. This runs through December 31 st. Details can be found on the AHA web site. Some very exciting news has come our way regarding Endurance and the Arabian on the international stage. This year all of the US Young Riders competing at the World Championships are mounted on Arabians and members of AHA. We have a great chance of being on the podium. Please remember to start making plans for our AHA convention in Lexington, Kentucky. Everyone has been working hard to make it a great one. Check the AHA web site for registration and the deadlines. Those of you who show your horses in California need to be aware of the ongoing issues with the drug rules. The California drug rules are different than those of USEF. At a show you may be tested by both CA and USEF. You must adhere to the CA rules which are in some cases more limiting than those of USEF. If you do not, you will be fined if tested. The CA rules were passed by the legislature and so to be changed they would have to go through the same process. Recently a law has passed through the state Assembly and Senate giving that authority to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The goal is to ultimately make the CA standards consistent with those of USEF. If signed by the Governor it will be effective January 1, 2014. The Region One Show was a successful one and exhibitors seemed pleased with some of the special events we added. Please be sure to look at the page about the show. Also at the August Delegate s meeting we will be nominating officers for 2014-2015. If the slate is uncontested we will elect at the same time. Your Director may serve for 4 years and all other officers have no limit on their terms. One final item, please remember that it is time to start thinking about the AHA Volunteer Service Awards. They are due to be forwarded to the Regional Director by August 31 st. You can find the nomination forms on the AHA web site under Membership/Member Awards. I hope you are all having a great summer. Remember our Region One meetings are open to all. Just be sure to make reservations. Mary Ann

The Region One Show held in beautiful Del Mar was a great success. The weather was beautiful and the Arabian Horses were even more so. We added some special events this year which seemed really popular. Thursday evening during the Halter classes we had a wine tasting event with vintners from the Ramona area. Friday evening saw the return of our Barn Fiesta with a wonderful dinner catered by Diane Power s restaurant. Saturday was our Red, White and Blue Day and our salute to the military, with a truly patriotic opening ceremony. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the show a success! You are too numerous to name but please know that we appreciate you! Thanks Mary Ann Region 1 Fall 2013 A BIG thank you to TMA Photography for these wonderful photos!

Region 1 Fall 2013, Region I Show Photos Thank you TMA Photography for these great candids from the Region I show.

Region 1 Fall 2013 "THE 2013-14 REGION 1 DIRECTORY IS "FAIT ACCOMPLI"... (that means "done" folks) The last directory for the region was 2007-2008. Now we have a new one! It will be distributed at the regional meeting on the 28th, so be sure to have someone from your club there as they will be bringing their club's copies home with them for distribution. If not a delegate, then someone, or make arrangements. Please call me if that is a problem (951-767- 7601). As a side note, I would really like to have you email me if there is a wrong phone or email address as this information came from an AHA membership list and sometimes one forgets to update their own information!!!! If there are enough of these then I probably will issue a sheet with those corrections on an e-blast. I think you all will be happy with the 4-color cover, readable size type and I wished I could have put Mary Ann in living color but it was cost prohibitive. Speaking of cost, once all advertisers have paid (bills have been sent) we will be able to pay all printing and production costs (including Nancy) and come within our budgeted figure. I want to thank all of the advertisers for supporting this effort and a huge Thank You to Nancy Harvey for her work in getting the typed club rosters to me. I also want to thank Mary Ann Hughes...she gave me free rein (which can be dangerous!) and we discussed direction etc and agreed on everything!. Enjoy your directory...barb DuBois" Kelli Newton was Na onal Champion at Youth Na onals in both 3rd and 4th Level Dressage with Excalibur DDF owned by Pam Bell. Kelli was also a TopTen in Dressage Seat Equita on. The Scholarship Commi ee gave out $1400.00 in scholarships for the year 2013. The recipients of the scholarships were; Sage Marie Smith, Cubby Sporrong, Emily Phillips and Kelli Newton. The Region One Scholarship Commi ee congratulates all the recipients.

SEAHA just hosted its 3rd annual competitive trail ride and it was a huge success. We had over 30 riders competing for great prizes and points. We had several Arabians, mules, draft horses and everything in between. A fun day was had by all. SEAHA also gained two new members from this ride.

Dressage News I have looked at the new tests for Western Dressage and the USEF Rider s Tests. There are a multitude of tests for each level in the Western Dressage, with the arena configuration the same as in the USEF Dressage. Some aspects seem to be difficult to judge, for instance a swinging back. There are only three Rider Tests, one for each Training, First and Second level. They are quite demanding in their requirements, probably should be looked at by the Equitation Committee.
