VBS 2016 Children s Music Rotation Base Conference Purpose Statement This two-hour plan is designed to train and equip leaders to conduct Lifeway s Submerged Music Rotation using the leader guide. Resources to Collect, Prepare, & Copy Resources to Collect VBS 2016 Music Rotation Leader Guide with DVD VBS 2016 Music Rotation and Musical CD VBS 2016 Decorating Made Easy with Clip Art CD (if available) VBS 2016 Worship Rally Guide (if available) VBS 2016 Tablecloth Colored construction paper red, blue, green, yellow, orange 3 of each 5 dowel rods (¼ in diameter by 3 ft long) String Magnets Paper clips 5 blue round plastic table cloths Themed related items for focal table i.e. sea creatures, coral Resources to Prepare Using Item 1, Fist Pattern and construction paper, create 6 fish from each color. Print the daily Bible story title, Bible story reference, and Today s Point on the same color of fish (one item per fish). You will have three fish printed on and three fish blank (6 total). Attach a large paper clip to the back of each fish. Attached a 3- to 4-foot long string to each dowel rod with a magnet attached to the end of the string. Cut apart the ABC cards one letter per conferee. Cut out two fish Mascot Fish and write with marker Remarkably Made (one word per fish) Resources to Copy Item 2, Mascot Fish (2 copies) card stock, color copy, if possible. Item 3, ABC cards on card stock, if possible. Focal Table Description Display the Music Rotation Leader Guide with DVD. Gather under the sea items such as sea creatures, coral formations. Consider using a VBS 2016 Tablecloth. Consider displaying a copy of the Decorating Made Easy and Worship Rally materials, if available. Room Setup Description Arrange chairs in two (or more) rows of semi-circles. Leave plenty of room for conferees to do choreography. Place the focal table at the front of the room to the side of the TV/DVD or screen. Set up five fishing holes using blue plastic tablecloths crumbled to look like water. Place twelve of the same colored fish in each fishing hole. 1

Decoration Suggestions Create the atmosphere of being under the sea with VBS 2016 Door Curtain, or light and dark blue crepe paper, draped from the wall or ceiling to look like water. Or twist light and dark green crepe paper from the floor part way up the wall to look like sea grass. Add sea creatures, coral, formations or other under the sea items. Consider some of the recommendations found on page 29 of the Music Rotation Leader Guide. Audio Visual Needs Laptop computer with CD/DVD player Projector (to connect with laptop) Large screen (if unable to project onto focal wall) TV/DVD player (if laptop and projector are unavailable) Teaching Steps 1. Welcome (5 minutes) Play the theme song Submerged as Divers (conferees) arrive. Introduce yourself by saying I am your Dive Instructor (name) and I like (something you like). Welcome to Submerged! Finding Truth Below the Surface. This year we will teach kids to submerge themselves in God s Word where they will discover that Jesus saw people differently. He didn t just see what s on the outside; He saw who people were down deep. Say: Jesus knows each one of us. He knows all about us, what we like and what we don t like, what we do and what we don t do. He even knows what we think. Since we don t know everyone here, find a Diver you do not know, swim over to him or her and introduce yourself by saying your name and something you like. Invite Divers to swim back to their seats. 2. Prepare for Leading VBS (5 minutes) Give quick overview of materials: Say: The Music Rotation Leader Guide with DVD provides a What You Need to Know regarding the Bible story the Divers will hear in the Observation Station. It is important that Dive instructors connect each day s biblical content with the song of the day. The guide provides the step-by-step material needed to teach the music and choreography for each lesson. The DVD comes with the leader guide and it has instructions for choreography, performance videos, and lyrics. As you learn the choreography from the DVD, keep in mind that if you mirror the instructors, and then stand in front of your Divers as you teach them, they will be doing the motions exactly like the instructors on the DVD. If you plan to use the DVD performance tracks in the Worship Rally, your Divers will mirror the Dive instructors on the video. It doesn t matter if they go to the right or to the left just so they are together and are having fun worshipping God. Boys and girls mimic you. The more energy you put into the music, the more energy you will get from the kids. Your music rotation will go much better if you are ready to lead by knowing the songs well. 3. Introduction Activity (15 minutes) Divide Divers into red, yellow, blue, green, and orange groups. Give one Diver from each group a fishing pole and instruct the groups to move to the fishing hole with fish matching their color. Once the Divers are settled at their fishing hole say: Each hole has fish that contains the daily Bible story title, Bible story verse reference, and Today s 2

Point. You are to cast your line into the fishing hole and catch a fish. Once you have caught a fish, if it has the Bible story title, Bible story reference, or Today s Point, you keep it. If it doesn t, you have to throw the fish back. Then it s the person to your right s turn to fish. If the Divers catch all three fish before each Diver has had a turn to fish, throw them back and continue. Play theme song quietly in background. Once Divers have had a chance to fish, invite them to pick up a blank fish and return to their seats. Explain to the Divers that we will review the biblical content they discovered while fishing as we learn each day s song. Be sure to keep the blank fish because they will use it at the end of the conference. 4. Presentation (75 minutes) Overview: Here in the Deep Sea we will embark on an adventure like no other. Divers will engage in fun songs that will reinforce the biblical truths learned during Bible study in the Observation Station. Let s begin: Day 1: Jesus Saw Zacchaeus Ask for a volunteer to share the Bible Story title (Jesus Saw Zacchaeus), the Bible story reference, and Today s Point (Jesus knows who I really am) for Day 1 found on the fish from the introduction activity. Demonstrate how to make the two-handed push motion. Hold hands with palms facing out; push forward with both hands. Lead divers to repeat the motion with you pushing to the right, to the left, and to the floor. Ask divers to push forward if they have a sister. Push to the left if they have a brother. Push down if they have more than one brother or sister. Explain to the divers that this motion will be used throughout Day One s song You Know Me. Invite divers to stand and teach the words and movements for chorus to You Know Me. Speak the words while demonstrating the motions, phrase by phrase. Lead the divers to repeat the words and motions after you do each phrase. You know me: move arms from sides up, cross in front of the body, continue over the head, and back down to sides (in large circular motion) Better than I: Press both hands (palm out) down to the right. Know me: Press both hands (palm out) down to the left. Everything about me: Hold hands in front of stomach, palms facing in; move hands out, opening up arms, and back in. Better than: Hold hands, palms up, with shrugging gesture. I know myself: Circle hands in front of body and back to shrugging gesture. You love me: Move hands to opposite shoulders, crossing arms (self hug). Jesus, how: Move right hand down from shoulder to side, palm out. You love me: Move left hand down from shoulder to side, palm out. You love me: Move hands to opposite shoulders, crossing arms (self hug). No one else: Hold arms crossed in front of body, hands/palms out; wave back and forth twice in opposite directions (like a no gesture). Play the You Know Me introduction video with music from the Music DVD and invite Divers to follow along. Be sure to sing along, doing the motions, with the DVD. Day 2: Jesus Saw the Woman at the Well Ask for a volunteer to share the Bible Story title (Jesus Saw the Woman at the Well), the Bible story reference, and Today s Point (Jesus knows my worth) for Day 2 found on the fish from the introduction activity. 3

Show a letter B and ask what it stands for. (Believe that Jesus is the Son of God). Repeat with C. (Confess your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord). Randomly distribute the prepared ABC letter cards (Item 3). Say: When I say, Go, move to find two other divers with the same letter. Go! Allow divers to scramble to form groups of three. Tell divers: Talk with your group about what your letter means in the song, Play the song as background as the divers talk. Stop the music and call for attention. Say: Now when I say, Go, move to find two people with letters different from you. Go! After divers form groups, say: Tell your group what your letter means. Ask divers to return to their seats. Introduce ABC Submarine. In the chorus we will sing, We all need a friend. I want you to (assign motions) do high five, fist bump, hand shake. Ask: Who is the friend 4

Invite divers to stand and sing along with Submerged. Play the Submerged performance video from the Music DVD. 5. Review (5 minutes) Allow conferees to ask questions regarding the music rotation for VBS 2016. Share decorating ideas from the Music Rotation Leader Guide (page 29). Bring attention to the Lifeway VBS website for VBS resources. 6. Post-Event Continued Connection (10 minutes) Remind divers that VBS isn t over at the end of the week. The purpose of VBS is to bring unchurched boys and girls in so they can hear the gospel. A vital part of VBS is the connections made with unchurched families during the week. As the music rotation instructor you will have opportunities during the week to interact with the divers attending your VBS. Be ready to share Jesus with your kids. On Day 3 divers will learn about Nicodemus and how we all need a Savior. Be ready to discuss the ABCs with divers if asked. You will find more information about the ABCs on the inside cover of your Music Rotation Leader Guide. Say: As member of your VBS Dive Team you are crucial in continuing the connections with the unchurched families. Ask divers to share ideas for connection activities. Share resource: VBS 2016 Devotional Bible for Kids 7. Closing (5 minutes) Say: This year s motto is Jesus sees. Jesus knows. Jesus saves. You are helping kids learn to see themselves and others as Jesus sees them. You are also helping them to understand the need to go deeper in their understanding of Jesus. Show Scripture Verse on Music DVD and ask Divers to say it with you. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24. Instruct divers to find a partner and pray together for a few minutes. Then pray aloud for the group thanking God for Jesus and asking Him to lead us as we Submerge finding truths in His word. 7
