May 8, 2017 Dear Parents: Many of you are aware of the recent release of a Netflix series based on the fictional book 13 Reasons Why, a tragic story of teen suicide, sexual victimization, bullying and drugs, all topics that touch the lives of many young people. This show has become a popular topic on social media, local and national news programs and lunchroom conversations among our middle school students. While most students are able to discern the fictional story from real life events, the graphic nature of the show has raised concerns for those young people who may have struggled with mental health issues or those who are deeply affected by the emotional intensity of the show. Students may be watching the series with parental permission, supervision or without your knowledge. As parents, you are the primary educators of your children. I highly recommend that you monitor the viewing of this series, if in fact, your child has access to it. As a school family, we are ever sensitive to the response students may have to the topics discussed in the series and continue to partner with you and to support you in any way possible. It is our mission to ensure that our children grow and mature in grace and in wisdom. Below are some resources that may be of help to you. 13RW-Talking-Points-Final_v6.pdf 173.78 KB (Last Modified on April 27, 2017) 13 Reasons Why Guidance_FINAL.pdf 272.92 KB (Last Modified on April 27, 2017) https://www.save.org/blog/tips-watching-new-netflix-series-13-reasons/ Sincerely, Carol La Salle
