Animal Care Forms It is the responsibility of every 4-H member to ensure that proper care is taken of their animal(s) according to acceptable methods of good animal husbandry, as set forth by Colorado State University Extension and the Colorado Department of Agriculture. A healthy animal requires sufficient food, water, shelter, and appropriate health care. Hippology/Horse Bowl Hippology is an activity that can enhance learning for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a competitive setting. The term "Hippology" comes from the Greek word "hippo", meaning horse, and "ology", meaning "the study of". Participants will be able to demonstrate their experience and knowledge gained by studying the anatomy and physiology of the horse, parasites, feeds, tack, disciplines, breeds and just about everything horse. Phases of a Hippology contest include a written exam, identification of items shown on slides, judging, ID stations, and team problems. Participating in the Hippology program will only enhance your horse project experience. The primary objective of Horse Bowl is to provide an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H to demonstrate their knowledge of equine-related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Play consists of double elimination tournament style matches. Participants must work with four to five team members to answer questions to the best of their ability. Competing as team members assists youth with the development of social skills, cooperation and managing feelings, as they become comfortable with working alongside others toward a common goal; integrity and sportsmanship are also developed through the Horse Bowl experience. This project is conducive to both traditional rural 4-H members with equine experience and urban youth who do not have the opportunity to raise animals. Members are required to participate in Hippology in order to participate in Horse Bowl. Horse Judging Horse judging is an art where an authoritative person expresses his/her opinion of a class, by his/her order of placement. The ability of a judge to express his/her opinion orally reinforces his/her order of placement. For the judge to give a convincing set of oral reasons, she/he must compare the horses in the class while keeping in mind the ideal accepted model of that breed and/or type of performance. We are all very excited to be offering Horse Judging as an option again this year. Adams County Scholarship & Award Information due April 15 th Each year the Adams County 4-H Horse Committee awards a scholarship to a deserving 4-H member who is entering their higher education. The application can be found at the following link: http://www.colostate.edu/depts/coopext/adams/4h/scholarships.htm 9

Our Monday Night Open Riding has changed to Monday Night Clinic Nights! You now have the opportunity to ride with an expert for only $10. Each Monday night we will have a clinician working on horsemanship skills with our 4-H members. Most Mondays will be on a drop in basis where you can have the clinician answer your questions and help you on whatever area you most need help. This means that you may show up tacked up for the discipline you prefer (English or Western). On other nights we will have a specific topic (such as showmanship) and you will have to sign up for a specific time slot. Unless otherwise stated there will be a portion of the arena available for 4-H kids only open riding (for those not wanting clinic opportunity). 14

ADCO Open Horse Show Series We are offering two open shows per discipline this year. At each show we will be giving Daily High Point and Reserve High Point per discipline and age division. At the second show for each discipline and age division we will be awarding a Season Grand Champion High Point and a Season Reserve Champion High Point (accumulation of points from both shows per discipline). The Open Horse Show Series follows the rules in the 2015 4-H rule book. Personal attire must follow the 4-H rule book for each discipline. In all performance classes and the written test, points are accumulated by the exhibitor. Ribbons will be given through 6 th place. Points are accumulated for each class as follows: 1 st place = 6 points 2 nd place = 5 points 3 rd place = 4 points 4 th place = 3 points 5 th place = 2 points 6 th place = 1 point All classes offered will be counted as point classes. The written test will count as a point class in each division for ages 8-18. ALL point ties will be broken by the written test score. A second tie will be broken by a randomly drawn class. Walk/Trot Class entrants may only enter in; Showmanship, Walk/Trot Equitation, Walk/Trot Horsemanship and Walk/Trot Trail. All Walk/Trot classes may be shown in English or Western Attire/tack. Walk/Trot equitation is a class judged only on the rider. Riders in this class are those who cannot yet handle their horses at a lope. Novice Classes are for entrants who do not hold a level II card in 4-H, did not receive a blue ribbon in that novice class in any prior show season and have never placed First in a non-novice class. Novice riders may also enter English Pleasure and Western pleasure classes. All Trail classes except Walk/Trot will be held as western trail, to be shown in Western attire/tack only. Chaps will be optional in all classes at ADCO Summer Series Shows. Participants may only enter one horse per class. 15
