Brodsky, M. (Author & Presenter), Rocho-Levine, J. (Author), Austin, T. (Author), Kleinhenz, D. (Author), Levine, G. (Author), Fahlman, A. (Author), "Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is a group of non-invasive and minimally invasive tests that provide valuable information about anatomic and physiologic function with applications throughout the field of marine mammal science. These tools yield quantitative, experimentally derived data about metabolism, dive physiology, gas kinetics, disease, and health. PFT, including spirometry, capnography (exhaled O2 and CO2 levels), and esophageal pressure measurements, was performed with six Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at Dolphin Quest, Oahu. Data was collected using a custom-built, fleisch type pneumotachometer, an esophageal balloon catheter, differential pressure transducers, amplifiers, and a fast response gas analyzer, integrated through an A/D converter to a laptop computer running Labchart. The system was calibrated bi-directionally, for both volume and flow rate, against a Hans Rudolph linear pneumotachometer and a Meriam Laminar Flow Element. 98 individual trials were performed under stimulus control (voluntarily), with dolphins able to terminate participation in a trial at any time. Trials consisted of spirometry and capnography (+/-esophageal pressure measurement), before and after breath holds of varying duration, preand post- physical exertion, and breathing on land (during voluntary beaching). Both spontaneous breaths and forceful expiratory breaths (trained chuffs ) were measured. Preliminary results from this first field trial of the equipment were consistent with the few previously reported results of spirometry and capnography in cetaceans (Olsen 1969; Kooyman 1975, 1981; Van Elk 2001; De Jongh 2006). Not previously reported was the 2 to 5 fold decrease in flow rates and exchanged volumes when the dolphins were beached, despite an observed increase (subjective) in respiratory effort. This pilot study illustrates the feasibility of PFT in marine mammals. The medical and physiological information from PFT can help inform conservation, mitigation and management decisions affecting a wide range of marine mammals including free ranging stocks, stranded and rehabilitating animals, and animals in human care.," Biennial meeting, The Society for Marine Mammalogy, Dunedin New Zealand.
