Capital City Club Crabapple Course Par 70 7,319 Yards Live scoring at golfstat.com Ball State will be paired with Texas Tech and Coastal Carolina for the first and second rounds. The Cardinals will tee off Tuesday at 8:40 a.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m. The teams will be re-grouped for Thursday s third round based on the 36-hole results. Ball State Earns Spot in NCAA Championships Ball State grabbed the fifth and final NCAA Championships qualifying spot out of the Pullman Regional by virtue of a one-hole playoff victory over San Diego State. The teams finished regulation tied for fifth place in the 14-team regional after 54 holes. The Cardinals are now the No. 30 seed in the NCAA Championships, which will be played May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga., just outside Atlanta. A total of 30 teams will compete in the opening 54 holes of the NCAA Championship, May 28-30. The field will then be cut down to the top eight teams, which will be bracketed for a three-day match play tournament to determine the national champion. Cardinals Making First NCAA Championships Appearance Since 1986 Ball State has reached the NCAA Championships as a team for the 13th time in program history (11 at the University Division/DivisionI level) and the first time in 27 years. The Cardinals most recent appearance came at the 1986 Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Ball State reached this year s championship rounds by advancing out of the NCAA Regionals, which it competed in for the first time since 1991. A Quick Look at the Cardinals Ball State enters the championships ranked No. 55 nationally by Golfstat and No. 56 by Golfweek. The Cardinals reached a high ranking of No. 27 at the end of the fall season. In 10 team events this year, Ball State has two tournament wins -- the Firestone Invitational and the Golf Pride Pinehurst Intercollegiate -- and a pair of runner-up finishes -- the Pinetree Intercollegiate and the Mid-American Match Play. The Cardinals then topped San Diego State by one stroke in a one-hole playoff featuring all five golfers from each team competing with the low four scores counting. Alex Stinson was the last player to hole out and tapped in for the only birdie among either team to push Ball State through with a one-shot victory. Stinson tied for 16th place individually at 4-under par 212, while Tyler Merkel tied for 30th at 1-under 215 and McCormick Clouser tied for 37th at even-par 216. Joe Gasser tied for 41st at 1-over 217 and Tony Lazzara tied for 55th at 5-over 221 to round out the Ball State lineup. Cardinals Play Better Than Seed Ball State, which entered the Pullman Regional as a No. 10 seed, was the highest seeded team to emerge from the regional round. Arizona State and Coastal Carolina, both seeded ninth in their regionals, also advanced. Beyond those three teams, no team seeded higher than seventh made it to the NCAA Championships. Playoff Prowess Ball State is one of two teams to reach this year s NCAA Championships through a playoff. The Cardinals tied for fifth place at the Pullman Regional but defeated San Diego State on the first playoff hole. Oklahoma claimed the fifth spot in the Tallahassee Regional by virtue of a playoff victory over South Florida. The Sooners also needed only the first playoff hole. Red Numbers in Regional (Complete NCAA Tournament history on pages 15-17) Ball State turned in some of its top rounds of the year and re-wrote the program s NCAA Tournament record book at the Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. Alex Stinson recorded the lowest 54-hole total ever by a Ball State golfer in NCAA Tournament play at 212. McCormick Clouser s opening round of 4-under par 68 is the lowest 18-hole score by any Cardinal in NCAA Tournament play, while Stinson s pair of 69s are tied for second on that list and Tyler Merkel s pair of 70s are tied for fifth. The Cardinals team score of 281 in the first round in Pullman is the lowest NCAA round in school history, and the regional total of 856 is the best for any Ball State team over 54 holes of an NCAA event. Stinson matched his career-low 18-hole score of 69 in each of the final two rounds at the regional on the way to a career-best 54-hole score of 4-under par 212. Not only was Stinson Ball State s best finisher at the tournament in a tie for 16th, but he also recorded the clinching birdie in the one-hole playoff with San Diego State to send the Cardinals on to the NCAA Championships. Ball State vs. the Championships Field Ball State has seen seven of the teams at the NCAA Championships at previous tournaments this season, including four -- California, TCU, Southern California and Saint Mary s -- at the Pullman Regional. It was the third time this season the Cardinals played an event with Saint Mary s, having finished ahead of the Gaels once at the Firestone Invitational. The Cardinals also saw Kent State at the Mid-American Conference Championships, UCF at the Northern Intercollegiate and Texas Tech at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Ball State topped Texas Tech by five strokes at Colonial Country Club in Memphis and finished just two shots back of UCF at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club. Merkel s Career Numbers Junior Tyler Merkel, who won the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and has placed in the top-5 in six tournaments this year, is already making his mark on the Ball State record book. He owns three career tournament titles to rank in a tie for ninth in program history. His 72.83 stroke average this season ranks fourth in program history, while his 73.47 average over his first three years is on pace for the Ball State career record. Highly Decorated by MAC Ball State had three players selected to the All-Mid-American Conference teams. Junior Tyler Merkel was named to the five-man first team, while seniors Joe Gasser and Alex Stinson were recognized on the six-man second team. The only team with more selections was MAC champion Kent State with four. The Cardinals and Golden Flashes combined for seven of the 11 all-conference picks. The three selections were the most for Ball State since the Cardinals had a school-record four all-conference golfers in 1982 (Dean Prange, Brian Tennyson, Kirk Schooley and B.G. Winings). Winning at Famous Locations Ball State posted its wins this year at two of the most well-known facilities in the country. The Cardinals first victory of the year came in October at the Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club (North Course) in Akron, Ohio. Ball State ran away from the field on its way to a 13-stroke victory at 7-under par. The second win came at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst Village, N.C. The event was spread over Pinehurst s No. 2 course, host to major championships, and its No. 6 course. Homegrown Talent All five golfers in the Cardinals NCAA Championships lineup are from the state of Indiana, including four from within a one-hour radius of Ball State s campus. Joe Gasser is from Yorktown, Ind., a Muncie suburb, while Alex Stinson (Anderson, Ind.), McCormick Clouser (Bluffton, Ind.) and Tony Lazzara (Carmel, Ind.) are also from near Muncie. The golfer farthest from home in the Ball State lineup is Tyler Merkel, who comes from Evansville, Ind., in the southwest corner of the state. Of the 11 golfers on the Cardinals full roster, nine come from within the Hoosier state. Experienced Cardinals Ball State will take an experienced group to the NCAA Championships. The Cardinals lineup features three seniors, Joe Gasser, Tony Lazzara and Alex Stinson, and one junior, Tyler Merkel. That quartet has combined to play in 133 career stroke play events for Ball State (Gasser 39, Stinson 33, Merkel 31, Lazzara 29). The fifth golfer in the lineup is sophomore McCormick Clouser, a transfer who has played in 20 stroke-play events as a collegian between Michigan State (16) and Ball State (4). Clouser Joins Cardinals as Mid-Year Transfer Ball State added Michigan State transfer McCormick Clouser to its roster in January. Clouser, a sophomore, is from Bluffton, Ind., an hour s drive from Muncie and played at Norwell High School. After competing in all six events during the fall season for Michigan State, Clouser has played in five of Ball State s six events this spring. He made his impact felt immediately when he posted a perfect 3-0 record at the Mid- American Match play, his first event for Ball State, and was named MAC Golfer of the Week. Coach Fleck in 15th Year Ball State alum Mike Fleck is in his 15th season leading the Cardinals men s golf program. Fleck has guided the Cardinals to 14 tournament titles during his tenure while coaching 14 All-Mid-American Conference selections and 41 Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars. This season has been one of the best for Fleck, the 2010-11 MAC Coach of the Year. Ball State has won twice, finished runner-up twice and been ranked as high as No. 27 in the country in addition to reaching the NCAA Championships. Fleck was a member of the last Ball State team to play in an NCAA Tournament in 1991, though that team did not advance past the regional and Fleck did not compete. Earl Yestingsmeier Still Following the Cardinals Mike Fleck is one of only two head coaches in the past 51 years for Ball State. He took over for his former coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who guided the Cardinals for 36 years. Yestingsmeier was inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981, the Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame in 1997. Yestingsmeier continues to have a close relationship with the Ball State men s golf team, traveling to watch the Cardinals compete at virtually every tournament. BALL STATE AWARD WINNERS All-Mid-American Conference Tyler Merkel (first team) Joe Gasser (second team) Alex Stinson (second team) MAC Golfers of the Week Tyler Merkel (March 18) McCormick Clouser (Feb. 14) Tyler Merkel (Oct. 10) NOTEWORTHY Ball State is one of just three teams at the NCAA Championships to come from the Midwest, joining Kent State and Illinois. The Cardinals join Kent State to give the Mid- American Conference two teams in the field. MAC RECAP Ball State placed third at the Mid-American Conference Championships, held May 3-5 at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The Cardinals, which held a share of second place at the halfway point of the 72-hole event, finished behind Kent State, which won its fifth straight league title, and Toledo. Tyler Merkel, who earned all-tournament honors, placed fourth to lead Ball State individually with a four-round total of 3-over par. It was the second top-10 performance at the MAC Championships for Merkel, who tied for seventh two years ago as a freshman. Alex Stinson tied for 11th at this year s event and Tony Lazzara tied for 14th to give the Cardinals three among the top 15. FUTURE REGIONAL HOST Ball State will be host institution for one of the six NCAA Men s Golf Regionals in 2015. The Cardinals will host the event as a joint effort with the Hamilton County Sports Authority, a leading promoter of regional and amateur sports development, at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. The PGA Professional at the Sagamore Club is Dan Witt, a Ball State alum who lettered in golf for the Cardinals from 1999-2002. The other regionals for 2015 were awarded to the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. (host North Carolina), The Farms Golf Club in San Diego, Calif. (host San Diego), The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas (host Texas Tech), Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. (host Washington) and The Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn. (host Yale). The Cardinals celebrate after defeating San Diego State in a regional playoff to advance to the 2013 NCAA Championships. 4 Ball State Men s Golf

NCAA PULLMAN REGIONAL RECAP CARDINALS PUNCH TICKET TO NATIONALS IN PLAYOFF NCAA Regional May 16-18, 2013 Palouse Ridge Golf Club Pullman, Wash. Par 72 7,308 yards 54 Holes BSU Finish: T-5th of 14; 856 (281-284-291) Defeated San Diego State in a playoff to advance to NCAA Championships. PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Ball State men s golf team earned its first trip to the NCAA Nationals since 1986 after defeating San Diego State in a playoff for the fifth and final qualifying spot out of the Pullman Regional. Alex Stinson s up-and-down for birdie out of a greenside bunker on the par-5 18th hole sealed the playoff victory for Ball State, whose four counting scores on the hole bettered San Diego State s by one. With all the other regionals complete at the time of the playoff, Ball State became the 30th and final team to punch its ticket to Capital City Club in Atlanta for Nationals. It s absolutely amazing, Ball State coach Mike Fleck said. Our motto the last few years has been to stay relevant, and we did that this week. Coming down those last few holes (in regulation), I kind of thought we had lost the opportunity, but we didn t. It s amazing what these guys have done and what they continue to do. And we re still relevant. The celebration that followed Stinson s birdie looked less likely nearly two hours earlier when the Cardinals finished a challenging final round in cold and windy conditions three shots behind San Diego State at 8-under par for the tournament. But the Aztecs were still on the course, and by the time they finished, the teams were tied for fifth. A playoff ensued with the 10 golfers from the two teams going off in two groups from the 18th tee. The top four scores from each team would determine the winner. All five San Diego State golfers had looks at birdie but could not make them and settled for pars. After Ball State s Tony Lazzara made a sand save for par in the first group, Stinson s playing partners, Tyler Merkel and McCormick Clouser, each made pars of their own in the second. Then Stinson, who was in the bunker in two and knocked his sand shot within a foot, tapped in for what was the only birdie. It s something the guys talked about on the tee before the playoff hole, Fleck said. They said it was really going to come down to the shots around the green, and it definitely did. San Diego State looked like they were in much better position, but our last three guys got it done. It was awesome to watch. Stinson s playoff birdie capped an impressive week at Washington State s Palouse Ridge Golf Club. In Saturday s final round, the senior matched his career best for the second day in a row with a 3-under par 69 to lead Ball State to a final-round total of 291. Stinson opened with back-to-back birdies for the second straight day on his way to a 33 on his first nine holes and then made all pars on his second nine. He was Ball State s top individual for the tournament in a tie for 16th at 4-under par after a career-low 54-hole total of 212. Merkel, who overcame a late triple bogey to post a 75 on Saturday, tied for 30th individually at 1-under par. Clouser ended the tournament in a tie for 37th with a careerbest 54-hole total of even-par 216. He posted a 76 in the final round. Joe Gasser fired a final-round 72 that put him in a tie for 41st at 1-over par, and Lazzara closed with a 75 to tie for 55th at 5-over. Ball State s regional total of 864 as a team was the program s best in a 54-hole NCAA event. The Cardinals, which started the day in a tie for seventh in the 14-team field, were in and out of fifth position all day. Ball State closed with all pars on its final hole of regulation, the ninth, except for an up-and-down birdie from Gasser that proved to be just what the team needed to get into the playoff. 1. He has guided the Cardinals to a pair of wins at Firestone Country Club (2006 and 2012), the most recent of which came this season. This year s team also won at Pinehurst. Fleck s teams have won Ball State s own Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational a total of six times. The 2012-13 season has been one of Ball State s best under Fleck. In addition to the tournament victories at Firestone and Pinehurst, the Cardinals posted runner-up finishes at the Pinetree Intercollegiate and the Mid-American Match Play. In the fall of 2012, Fleck guided the Cardinals to a ranking as high as No. 27 in the nation by Golfweek. He led the team in its first NCAA Regional since 1991 and now has the Cardinals in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1986. Additionally, Fleck has coached individual NCAA Regional participants in each of the past two seasons -- Eric Steger in 2011 and Tyler Merkel in 2012. Fleck was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year for the 2010-11 season after a year that included a win at the Yestingsmeier and a second-place finish at the MAC Championships. The Cardinals have finished among the top-4 at the league tournament for three straight seasons. Fleck has had 14 All-MAC selections at Ball State, and the Cardinals three this year -- Merkel on the first team plus Joe Gasser and Alex Stinson on the second team -- marked the most for the program since 1982. In Fleck s first year as head coach in 1999 he coached All-American and MAC Golfer of the Year Jamie Broce. In addition to the on-course success, a Ball State golf student-athlete has been named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar on 41 occasions. In 2011-12, four Ball State golfers earned Scholar All-America status in TJ Carpenter, Tony Lazzara, Gasser and Stinson. In 2005-06, Ball State was the only school in the nation with five selections -- Brandon Boomsma, Patrick Wilkes-Krier, Wayne Denger, C.D. Hockersmith and Andy Skillman. Additionally, Fleck has had 15 Academic All-MAC selections and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (Broce in 1999 and Dan Witt in 2002). Fleck, who graduated from Ball State in 1993, served as an assistant coach with the Cardinals for the 1993-94 season.
