INTRODUCTION The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations lay down the legal requirements employers must follow in order to ensure they protect their employees and others, from the harmful effect of substances used at work. The Regulations first came out in 1988 and have been amended several times over the years. WHAT DOES COSHH REQUIRE? Five basic principles of occupational hygiene underline the COSHH Regulations. 1. Identify the hazardous substance, identify how it is to be used, assess the risk to health, the precautions and health risks arising from that substance. 2. If the substance is harmful, wherever possible, substitute for a less harmful substance. 3. Introduction of appropriate measures to prevent or control risks and ensuring control measures are used; any protective equipment is properly maintained; and any safety procedures are observed. 4. Where necessary, monitoring the exposure of employees and introducing an appropriate form of surveillance of their health. 5. Informing, instructing and training employees of the risks to their health and safety and the precautions needed to be taken. WHAT SUBSTANCES ARE COVERED BY THE REGULATIONS? The COSHH Regulations cover a wide range of substances which have the potential to cause harm to humans either at the time of their use or through their accumulative effect in the body. Substances are classified as:- TOXIC/VERY TOXIC CORROSIVE HARMFUL IRRITANT DANGEROUS TO THE ENVIRONMENT EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE

WHAT SUBSTANCES ARE LIKELY TO BE HAZARDOUS IN THE PREMISES? Generally, the substances used in most Tokyo Industries premises will be relatively low risk and will not put users and those in the vicinity at great danger. However, some products are classified as:- Harmful Irritant Toxic These are often cleaning chemicals and include:- Descaler Acid Cleaners Degreasers Aerosols Powders HOW TO RECOGNISE A HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE Under COSHH or the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, all persons at work need to know the safety precautions to take so as not to endanger themselves or others through exposure to substances hazardous to health. Below are four general classifications of risk which you may also see on some chemicals know the appropriate symbol, their meaning and their safety precautions. Toxic/very toxic May cause serious health risk or even death if inhaled, ingested or if it penetrates the skin. 1. Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection. 2. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. 3. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately. Corrosive May on contact cause destruction of living tissue or burns. 1. Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection. 2. Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. 3. In case of contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately (for 15 minutes) with plenty of water and seek medical advice. Harmful May cause limited health risk if inhaled or ingested or if it penetrates the skin. 1. Do not breathe vapour/spray/dust. 2. Avoid contact with skin. 3. Wash thoroughly before you eat, drink or smoke. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. Irritant May cause inflammation and irritation on immediate or repeated or prolonged contact with the skin or inhaled. 1. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. 2. In case of contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. Do not breathe vapour/spray/dust.

CLP Regulation The European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures the CLP Regulation came into force in all EU member states, including the UK, on 20 January 2010. As of 1 st June 2015, the CLP adopts the Globally Harmonised System, so in time, the same classifications and labelling will be used throughout the world. This means CLP hazard pictograms will be used which although very similar to the hazard symbols above, they have a new shape, new design and a new colour. A brief description is given here for information purposes only. Acute toxicity, Very toxic (fatal), Toxic etc Gasses under pressure Harmful skin irritation, serious eye irritation Flammable gasses, flammable liquids, flammable solids, flammable aerosols, organic peroxides, self-reactive, pyrophoric, self-heating, contact with water emits flammable gas Explosive, self reactive, organic peroxide Harmful to the environment oxidising gases, oxidising liquids, oxidising solids Respiratory sensitiser, mutagen, carcinogen, reproductive toxicity, systemic target organ toxicity, aspiration hazard

damage Corrosive (causes severe skin burns and eye damage), serious eye Tokyo Industries have identified a number of substances which may constitute a hazard to health, and assessed the possible risks. These are detailed in this COSHH Manual. Appropriate measures to control risks have been detailed on the appropriate COSHH Safety Data Sheets and risk assessments included in the COSHH Manual. Warnings are there for a reason - to protect you and your work environment. COSHH ASSESSMENTS The COSHH Regulations require that employers carry out an assessment into the health and safety hazards associated with using harmful, or potentially harmful, substances. Every product used by an employee, or which when used, might affect others in the vicinity, must be assessed and the significant findings recorded in writing. These documents are known as COSHH Assessments. Tokyo Industries and their chemical suppliers, in consultation with Acoura have assessed all products which will be used in the premises and have compiled COSHH Assessments as necessary. Every product must have an information sheet provided by the manufacturer. These are known as Safety Data Sheets and they contain the important information about the hazards and risks of the product. They also contain first aid information, emergency procedures for spillages, waste disposal advice and other technical data. The Safety Data Sheets form an important part of the COSHH Assessment although they are not, in themselves, a COSHH Assessment. The COSHH Manual contains the COSHH Assessments and Safety Data Sheets applicable to the approved hazardous substances in use in the premises. If a product is not included in this Manual then there has been no COSHH Assessment completed for the product by Tokyo Industries and the product cannot be used until such an Assessment has been provided. ONLY THE PRODUCTS CONTAINED IN THIS MANUAL ARE APPROVED SUBSTANCES WHICH HAVE BEEN AUTHORISED FOR USE IN TOKYO INDUSTRIES PREMISES COSHH CONTROL PROCEDURES The COSHH Assessments and Safety Data Sheets have been devised to indicate the level of risk to health from use and exposure to any of the hazardous chemicals in use within the Company. When a product is to be used, especially for the first time, consult the COSHH Manual contents pages. Follow the information given and make sure staff are familiar with it.

Follow the control measures indicated e.g. wear gloves, goggles etc. Don t forget that there could be people in the vicinity who might be affected. Don t forget to plan for spillages. Hazardous substances or chemicals not in the COSHH Assessment should not be used. Ensure all staff know where the COSHH Manual is kept for use in emergencies. When the task is complete, return the chemical container, securely capped, to a suitable storage area. If you have any queries or comments or would like to suggest improvements to the COSHH Manual please notify Acoura (01438 745771). RESPONSIBILITIES OF MANAGERS Managers and those with delegated authority, are responsible for ensuring that all employees use hazardous substances safely and that they follow the control measures outlined in the COSHH Assessment. Products which are classified as harmful or hazardous and which are not included in this Manual MUST NOT be used until a COSHH Assessment has been completed. TRAINING Managers are responsible for ensuring that all employees have received COSHH training using the COSHH Manual as a tool for information. In addition, all new employees must receive general chemical safety training when they first start employment with the Company. A record of any training carried out by the Manager should be recorded on the Employee Training Record and kept in the relevant personnel file. Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) REACH is being phased in until 2018 and the main responsibility lies with the manufacturer and supplier of chemicals to assess the risk and where required provide a REACH safety data sheet which identifies exposure scenarios and the risk management measures required to achieve a derived no exposure level for substances. This simply means that the format of safety data sheets discussed above will overtime change to provide additional information on exposure scenarios and risk management measures for supplied substances, and this information will need to be considered in the COSHH assessment relating to that substance. GENERAL SAFETY PROCEDURES In addition to any specific procedures detailed on the COSHH Assessment, the following general procedures should also be observed:- 1. Use ONLY the supplied/approved cleaning container for beer line cleaning. 2. Use chemicals only as recommended by the manufacturer. If in doubt, contact your Area Manager. 3. Don t use food or drink containers for storing cleaning solutions or chemicals and always make sure that chemicals are stored in correctly labelled containers.

4. Don t exceed the recommended temperature when using a cleaning product. 5. Always store potentially harmful substances securely and out of reach of children. 6. Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment when handling chemicals (see risk assessments for more details). Always ensure these are available for use at all times. 7. Don t mix substances with one another unless they are designed to be mixed together. 8. Don t use a substance for any purpose other than that for which it was supplied. 9. Don t store chemicals in boiler rooms, electrical meter cupboards or near any heat source as they could spontaneously ignite or give off harmful fumes or vapours. 10. Don t use substances in greater quantities than recommended.
