The Alkimos Beach Voice ALKIMOS BEACH / DECEMBER 2015 be safe Surf Life Saving WA on the beach over the holidays BE PART OF THE ACTION SUMMER EVENTS CALENDAR
WELCOME Locals often tell us they love hearing about their community. They want to know what s happening and about our plans for the future. They want to connect with each other. Welcome to the first edition of The Alkimos Beach Voice. We ve reached the 500 mark for residents calling Alkimos Beach their home and the number is quickly growing! Sprout continues to be a busy hive of activity, with lots happening over the coming months. Check out the Christmas events coming up at Sprout in the What s on section. We re pleased to announce that final approval from the Department of Environment has been received for the clearing of our beach access track and construction of the track has commenced. Upon completion, the crushed limestone track will be approximately 3 metres in width and 600 metres in length and will provide comfortable pedestrian and emergency vehicle access to the beach. It is anticipated that the car parking area and beach access will be completed and opened by mid-december 2015 just in time for the Christmas holidays. We re also excited to announce that Surf Lifesaving WA will be based at the beach every weekend and public holiday (excluding Christmas day) during the Summer school holidays, offering a BeachSAFE zone for all beachgoers. The team will be offering supervision, water safety education and select equipment for trialling water activities. In addition, SLSWA s BeachSAFE programs including Surf Survival, SurfBabies and SurfKids will commence on the beach in January. These programs will be free for Alkimos Beach residents. Register for your free course today at SLSWA.com.au using the code Alkimos Surf. A calendar of programs will be available online soon. As part of our commitment to safety at Alkimos Beach, for both our residents and employees, we have been working with the City of Wanneroo to ensure the drivers of 4WD vehicles and motorcycles currently using the beach and sand dunes within the foreshore area are made aware of and comply with the vehicle bans within this area. If you see any vehicles (cars, quad bikes, motorbikes etc.) entering or utilising the foreshore area, we ask that you note the car s number plate, make and model, direction of travel and to take a photo if possible, then report it to the City of Wanneroo rangers on 9405 5000 between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, or 1300 138 393 after hours. We wish all of you a safe and happy break over the Christmas period. My Community A number of volunteers in the Alkimos Beach community have come together to form the Alkimos Beach Progress Association (ABPA); a community group who share a common interest in making sure residents are connected and informed. Chris White, President of the ABPA, moved to Alkimos Beach with his wife Raelene earlier this year after being convinced right away that Alkimos Beach was the place for them. Chris, who is retired, now wants to start giving something back to the community. I want people to love where they live and be informed about what s happening in the area, Chris said. The official meeting of the ABPA was held early November where 24 residents attended as well as Mayor Tracey Roberts and representatives from Lendlease. Volunteers took up the positions of Secretary plus ten board members. The next meetup is going to be scheduled soon. The volunteer roles of Vice President and Treasurer are still open, but I encourage everyone to come along. I d like this to be a joint effort from the community. We live in a beautiful place, so let s work together to make it even better. The ABPA is an informal volunteer resident group with a shared vision of transitioning to a not-for-profit community group. Chris is often up at Sprout Hub meeting residents, but can also be contacted on 9590 0230. Residents become garden gurus 25 people attended our Smart Garden Smart Landscaping workshop on Saturday 7th November, which was provided free to residents and purchasers. These workshops, presented by David Beyer, principal of ActiveSustainability, help to educate residents and purchasers on setting up and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle at Alkimos Beach. The Smart Home Smart Landscaping workshop focused on creating compact veggie gardens, installing raised garden beds, water wise irrigation tips and more. David was also joined by guest speaker Chris Ferreira, Director at The Forever Project and lead presenter on Channel Nine s The Garden Gurus. This is a terrific initiative and very useful. I learnt a lot very relevant information, very practical and easy to apply lessons. - Resident More workshops on how to build, live and landscape smart will be held in 2016.
