The Annual Awards are presented at an Annual Awards ceremony which is held at a venue, date and time at the discretion of the Board. The exception may be the State Championship presentations and other event specific awards which are presented following selected events. Alongside the Annual Awards Triathlon WA acknowledges the participation of athletes across all the junior, elite and age group categories and have committed incentives to acknowledge participation at all levels of triathlon. This is known as the State Series Incentives (SSI). SSI are allocated during the season in alignment with key events selected by the TWA Board as State Series Races. State Series Races must comply with minimum standards of delivery as outlined in the MINIMUM STANDARD AT EVENTS guidelines. Awards presented by Triathlon WA include: 1. Triathlete of the Year Male and Female Open Award 2. Triathlete of the Year Male and Female Age Group Award 3. Triathlete of the Year Male and Female Junior Award 4. TWA Development Program Athlete of the Year Award 5. Champion Club and Club Event Series Award 6. Coach of the Year Award 7. Technical Official of the Year Award (Steve Barrie Award) 8. Individual Performance of the Year Award (Male & Female) 9. Chris Hewitt Memorial Award / Presidents Trophy TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR POINT RANKING & AWARDS To be eligible for the Triathlete of the Year Points, RankingS and incentives, all participants must be current financial members of Triathlon WA at the time of competition. OPEN AND AGE GROUP TRIATHLON SERIES: Each year a number of events on the Annual Calendar are awarded TWA Triathlete of the Year Series Status. The events selected will be across a range of distances which could include short Sprint events up to the full Ironman distance. Dependent on the number of Triathlete of the Year Series events on the season calendar, a set number of races will be established that will qualify a triathlete for the Triathlete of the year Award. The awards are for Triathlete of the Year (Open), Triathlete of the Year (Age Group) and Triathlete of the Year Junior (Junior Series). Awards are presented to the highest five point scoring male and female athletes in the Open category and highest three point scoring male and female triathletes in age group and junior categories. Athletes wishing to be considered in the Open category may accumulate points only in events in which they competed in that category. For athletes that normally choose to race Open, if a situation arises where no Open category is available in a race, event awards will be given as per advertised age group categories. However, point allocations for TOTY will be given as if the athlete raced Open (ranked in timed order and allocated accordingly). Once an Age Group athlete selects to race in the Open Category, they must continue to race Open for the remainder of the season and will not be able to accrue any further points in their age group category.
Should they qualify for an award in both their age group and Open categories, they will forfeit their age group award and will only be presented with an Open award. Athletes with a disability will accrue points for Triathlete of the Year In any of the State Series Races within their age group and their points will be allocated to the Paratriathlon category. Point allocation for each Triathlete of the Year Series Event will be awarded for the first 10 financial TWA members eligible for competition in each age group or open category. The following guidelines will be used: An athlete must be a current financial member of Triathlon WA, within a competitive category at the time of the event to accumulate points for that event. All races will be treated exactly the same. An athlete must have completed a minimum of two races to be eligible for an award. 2017/18 Season In 2017/18, the TWA Triathlete of the Year Series will be comprised of the State Championship events. These events will form the Triathlete of the Year Series for Open and Age Group (Senior) athletes. The series will consist of the following events: 1. State Duathlon Championship City of Armadale Duathlon 2. State Sprint Championship City of Joondalup 1 3. State Standard (Olympic) Distance Championship City of Bunbury 4. State Cross Tri Championships X-Adventure Dunsborough 5. State Long Course Championships SunSmart Ironman 70.3 Busselton 1 st 50points 2 nd 40points 3 rd 30 points 4 th 20 points 5 th 10 points 6 th 5 points 7 th 4 points 8 th 3points 9 th 2 points 10 th 1 point The Triathlete of the Year for Open and Age Group Awards will be presented to the top three athletes (age group) and five athletes (Open category) with the highest aggregated points, with the athletes best three results from the five races counting. JUNIOR TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR SERIES: The Junior Triathlete of the Year Series comprises a number of races specifically designed for junior triathletes aged 12-19 years. A set number of events to qualify are determined. Only Triathlon WA junior competitive members are eligible for the Series Awards. 7-11 year-old members are not eligible for these awards as their membership status reflects their involvement in participation based programs rather than competitive program. Age Categories - age as at 31 December 2018 13-14 (Triathlon Australia category name Youth B, School Sport category name Junior;) 15-16 (Triathlon Australia category name Youth A, School Sport category name Intermediate;) 17-19 (Triathlon Australia category name Junior, School Sport category name Senior;)

ITU U23 TRIATHLON SERIES An ITU Under 23 Series will be introduced for the first time in 2016/17. Competitors will be 20-23 years of age at 31 December 2018. The series will be based on the following three events: Race 1: TWA Development Program Race 1 (28 October 2017) Race 2: TEP TWA Development Program Race 2 (25 November 2018) Race 3: Rockingham (14 January 2018) (Draft legal category if offered) The Triathlete of the Year for ITU U23 will be presented to the top three male and female athletes with the highest aggregated points in the U23 age categories. All three races will contribute towards an athletes aggregate point score, with an athlete having to compete in a minimum of two races to be eligible for an award. TWA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ATHLETE OF THE YEAR This Award is awarded annually to the Triathlon Excellence Program athlete who has shown commitment, improvement and performance throughout the season following guidelines and selection by the WA State Junior Coaching Committee: National ranking and results Attendance and attitude at training Commitment to team values and interaction
Skills growth and continued improvement TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR SERIES INCENTIVES JUNIOR INCENTIVES: COMPLEMENTARY MEMBERSHIP: At each of the selected State Series Junior Races throughout the season, there will be a draw from across the junior categories (12-13; 14-15 and 16-19 Junior) from which one male and one female will be selected and receive complimentary membership for the following financial year. Valued at approx. $900 AGE GROUP INCENTIVES: FOUR VOUCHERS: $250 EACH as a draw prize for all Male and Female TOP THREE age group athletes at the end of the Triathlon Season. This will be drawn at the TWA Annual Awards Function. TWO VOUCHERS: $250 EACH for all Male and Female Age Group athletes who have participated in all four State Championship Series Races in the previous season. This will be drawn at the TWA Annual Awards Function. COMPLEMENTARY MEMBERSHIP: At each of the State Championship Series Races throughout the season, there will be a draw from across the age group categories from which one male and one female will be selected and receive complimentary membership for the following financial year. Valued at approx. $1,440 OPEN INCENTIVES: The top 3 place getters in the male and female open receive the following prize money allocation at the end of season Annual Awards Function (1 st - $1000, 2 nd - $500, 3 rd - $250,. Total Prize Money = $3,500) For each of the five State Championship Series Races across the season, TWA will contribute prize money to the value of $2,000 for each race which shall be broken down as follows: 1 st $500, 2 nd $300, 3 rd $200, for both male and female open categories. Valued at $10,000 The total prize money for open athletes across the season will be valued at $13,500. Prize money for Open categories will only be paid to TWA Members who are financial members at the time of competition. For each event TWA State Championship Event (Duathlon, Sprint, Standard, Cross Tri & Long course) in addition to the TWA State Series Race money, race director will be required to put up minimum total prize money of $1,100 which shall be broken down as follows (1st - $300, 2nd - $150, 3rd - $100) for male and female open athletes. Total prize money = $3,300. Total Financial contribution by TWA: $17,640
Total Financial contribution from other sources including race directors and sponsors: $7,500 CLUB AWARDS Champion Club This Award is awarded annually to the club whose members accumulate the most points in the Triathlon WA Triathlete of the Year Series events (both Senior Series and Junior Series) and is then weighted on a per member basis based on the clubs registered members as at the 30 April of the current season. For the purpose, all points accrued in any and all of the State Championship Series events will count. Members may only accumulate points for their primary club if a member of two or more clubs. Club Event Series This award is awarded annually to the club whose members accumulate the most points in the Club Event Series. The Club Event Series is the series of club run events designated by Triathlon WA as being part of the Club Event Series. Each club member participating in a Club Event Series Race will accrue one point for their club irrespective of their placing in the event. The points for each club at each event are weighted on a per member basis. Members may only accumulate points for their primary club if a member of two or more clubs. CHRIS HEWITT MEMORIAL AWARD TROPHY/PRESIDENTS TROPHY This trophy is in acknowledgment of the services and contributions made by Chris Hewitt, past TWA and TA President and Member of Stadium Triathlon Club. The President s Trophy was renamed the Chris Hewitt Award in 2006. Chris, whilst President of Triathlon Australia introduced the Club Membership Model thereby promoting the drive for tiered membership structure and including the club membership as a pathways for state and national membership. Chris was an instrumental member of the TWA Board when the decision was made to move the Rottnest Half Ironman from Rottnest down to the Margaret River Region and later to Busselton. This award is presented by the President of Triathlon WA to the person deemed to have made the most outstanding contribution the sport of triathlon through the past season. The President may consult the TWA Board for due consideration of awarding this trophy. This award need not be awarded every year and the candidate should exhibit exceptional contributions over the past season. STEVE BARRIE AWARD The Technical Official of the Year Award has been acknowledged since 2000. In 2007, the Triathlon WA Board recognised the significant contribution life member Steve Barrie had made to the sport and in turn dedicated and named this award after Steve Barrie. Awarded to the Technical Official of the Year on the recommendation of the Triathlon WA Technical Reference Panel. In recognition to their valuable contribution to the technical program throughout the season based on their regular and continuous participated in the Field of Play in at least 5 events throughout the season and their contribution to the progression of the technical program throughout the season. The winner(s) of this award may be nominated for any other appropriate industry awards as deed appropriate by TWA Board and management. This may include Department of Sport and Recreation Officials Awards, ANZ Sports Star Awards.
COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD This award will recognise those individuals who have coached Western Australia athletes (Age Group or Elite) to outstanding achievements in the past 12 months. TWA will coordinate the call for nominations in conjunction with the Triathlon Australia call for the TA Age Group Coach of the Year Awards, so that only one nomination process is held. A recommendation for the nominee for both awards will be put forward to the TWA Board for their endorsement. Eligibility and criteria: A nominee must have coached a Western Australian athlete or athletes to one or more outstanding performances over the previous season (domestic, national or international). Nominees must be current members of Triathlon WA and a currently accredited triathlon coach at the time of their nomination. The winner(s) of this award may be nominated for any other appropriate industry awards as deemed appropriate by TWA Board and management. This may include Department of Sport and Recreation Coaches Awards, WA Sports Federation Sports Star Awards. INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR AWARD This award will highlight the most outstanding performances or one off performance from an Australian male and female athlete over the previous season including WA athletes racing ITU and WTC events. Eligibility and criteria: All members of Triathlon WA who are a professional licence holder, elite athlete or categorised athlete are eligible for nomination. Nominations will be received by the Board from a panel consisting of the TWA Executive Director, TWA Education and Training Manager (High Performance Manager) and the TWA High Performance Coach. The TWA Board will then select the athlete to receive the Individual Performance of the Year Award. The winner(s) of this award may be nominated for any other appropriate industry awards as deemed appropriate by TWA Board and management. This may include Department of Sport and Recreation Athlete Awards, ANZ Sports Star Awards. EVENT AWARDS IRONMAN TROPHIES Triathlon WA Ironman Western Australia Trophy The trophy s history stems since 2004 when Ironman came to Western Australia. Both Chris Hewitt and Mark Batten were instrumental in working with the then Shire of Busselton and Tourism WA to secure the full Ironman event in WA. In honour and recognition of Triathlon WA and Western Australian triathletes, this trophy is awarded to the first Western Australian Male and first Western Australian Female to finish Ironman WA each year fastest male and female finisher STATE LONG COURSE TROPHIES Paul Goodman Memorial Trophy
Awarded by TWA to a competitor showing exceptional courage in entering and competing in the Ironman 70.3 Busselton event. Awarded to an athlete who demonstrates persistence and strength to overcome adversity and exceptional circumstances and goes on to compete and finish the Ironman 70.3 event in that season. This award need not be awarded every year. Paul Goodman was an age group athlete who competed in the Long Course for many years. Paul unfortunately was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of melanoma cancer and very sadly lost his life after a short and harrowing battle in less than eight months. Paul was an unassuming, talented athlete who showed tenacity and strength during his struggle with Cancer and the trophy was duly named after him given his fighting spirit. Golden Chainring Trophy Awarded to the person with the fastest cycle split in Ironman 70.3 Busselton. STATE CHAMPION TROPHIES Six calendar events are designated State Championship events each year. These are Long Course, Olympic Distance event (1.5/40/10), Sprint Distance (750/20/5), Duathlon, Aquathlon and Interclub. The Interclub event is subject to other requirements outlined below. While State Championship events are open to non-member competitors, the title of State Champion can only be awarded to financial competitive members of Triathlon WA at the time of the event (although a non-member who finishes first should be recognised at the award ceremony). State Champions are recognised to the first such member in each 5 year age group and the Open category for both males and females. INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT Points are awarded to finishers on the basis that the first Female and the first Male to finish will be awarded points equal to the highest number to finish in any one gender. The second Male and the second Female to finish will each receive one less point and so on down the list of finishers. ROB PICKARD TROPHY Awarded to the Club with the most accumulated points on the day. TWA PRESIDENTS INTERCLUB TROPHY To be eligible a Club must have at least 10 finishers. It is awarded to the Club that has the highest average score. This is based on the average of all their competitors. ie If a Club has 25 members finish then their total accumulated score gets divided by 25. FUNDING SUPPORT Annually Triathlon WA will contribute up to a maximum of $500 towards travel for the WA Age Group Coach Nominee and the WA Technical Official Representative who have been nominated for representation at the Triathlon Australia Celebrations of Champions Dinner.
