Penobscot River The Most Challenging Whitewater in New England Rafting on the Penobscot can be summed up simply as one of the biggest thrills and one of the most peaceful times wrapped together. Obviously, the rapids are the source of the thrills but the time in between is so peaceful...just the sound of the river, beautiful scenery, a salmon fisherman or two and maybe even an eagle... so relaxing. You will experience technical rapids, exposed rocks, steeper gradients and awesome whitewater. The river is set in the shadow of mile high Mt. Katahdin and on the perimeter of Baxter State Park. Eagle, osprey, moose and bear sightings are not uncommon, while the river abounds with salmon and trout.
