Pressure Independent Control Valve The Terminator PICV Pressure Independent Control Valve is a combined constant ow limiter and full stro e, full authority, e ual percenta e temperature control valve. The Terminator PICV is suitable for use in variable and constant temperature systems and may be used as a constant ow limiter in constant volume systems (without an actuator head) or as a true PICV in variable volume systems. Operating principles The Terminator PICV valve is made up of three main parts: 1. di erential pressure re ulator 2. re ulatin valve for ow ad ustment 3. ow pre-settin nob The di erential pressure re ulator is the heart of the pressure independent control valve. y eepin a constant di erential pressure across the control valve, constant ow and full authority temperature control can be achieved. Incomin pressure P1 is transmitted to the top face of the diaphra m, while out oin pressure P3 is transmitted to the underside of the same diaphra m. constant e ective di erential pressure is maintained between P2 and P3. s P1 increases relative to P3, it acts on the diaphra m closin the shutter ( ) a ainst a seat ( ), thereby lowerin the e ective di erential pressure. s P1 decreases relative to P3, the diaphra m acts to open the shutter ( ) from the seat ( ), thus increasin the e ective di erential pressure. The diaphra m acts a ainst a sprin in order to balance the pressure control and stop the diaphra m oscillatin. 1 2 3 Functional schematic P1 A B P2 P3 Water ow throu h a valve varies as a function of the area of passa e and the pressure di erential across that valve. Due to the incorporation of the di erential pressure re ulator, the di erential across the valve seats P2 P3 is constant, meanin that ow is now only a function of area of passa e. Settin and maintainin a ow rate value is also possible. The control valve presents an e ual percenta e characteristic. The maximum ow can be preset, cho in the outlet section of the control valve, by usin the raduated ad ustment nob. The percenta e value, indicated on the scale, matches the maximum ow rate percenta e. This value can be chan ed by turnin the ad ustment nob until it reaches the selected position (matchin the percenta e indicated on the scale). loc in mechanism stops the valve set values from bein chan ed inadvertently.

PICV replaces a traditional control valve on a terminal unit ( C, C, H ). It limits ow rate irrespective of pressure and o ers the possibility to modulate the ow rate (accordin to room temperature) by usin a proportional thermostat or MS system.
