It s an annual rite of passage (anticipated with nervous excitement) for tens of thousands of youngsters, giving them a chance to shine in front of family and friends and show the results of their hard work, dedication, and progress. A big part of the dance training process includes learning through performance which helps build self-esteem, self-assurance, and contributes to a sense of confidence. It also helps develop retention skills, as well as learning the positive aspects of working as a team with their classmates on a group performance with the goal of creating the best end result. Our dance recital theme this year is The Great American Road Trip and we are working hard to bring it to the stage. In order to ensure that our recital runs safely and smoothly, we ask that you read the following information thoroughly and as always, please call or email us with any questions. 1

RECITAL GUESTS Please be aware and inform your guests that the dance recital will run between 2-2½ hours and if young audience members cannot sit quietly for that length of time it would be best not to bring them. Distractions in the audience make it very difficult for the performers on stage to remain focused and also diminish the quality of the videotape. Part 3: COSTUMES, TIGHTS & SHOES COSTUME DISTRIBUTION Costumes are now being distributed. If your child s costume is in a bag, please transfer it to a hanger. If your child has multiple costumes please write their full name (before picture day) on a small adhesive label and adhere it on the inside tags (or other inconspicuous place) of all costumes, shoes and any accessories (headpieces, gloves ) using a black, fine point, Sharpie. COSTUME CARE Please make sure your child does not wear their costumes or tights prior to picture day or after picture day until the dress rehearsal. If costumes are damaged or accessories are missing your child will not go onstage. If tights are torn or dirty they must be replaced before the recital. ALTERATIONS On rare occasions costume alterations may be necessary which will be the responsibility of parents. Undergarments (bras and underpants) must not be seen when costumes are on so please plan ahead for this. We sell nude camisoles (at the studio) to wear under itchy costumes. TIGHTS Students are required to wear the tights provided for them with their costume. We will have extra tights on hand for purchase (in case of emergency). Extra tights are also included in the recital pack which can be ordered by filling out the recital order form on page 12. SHOES Dress code shoes are required in time for picture day for all students. If new shoes are needed we recommend that you order them soon so that your child will have time to break them in. Please wipe existing shoes clean with a damp cloth to spiff them up for pictures and recital. TRANSPORT If your child has multiple costumes they are to arrive to the dress rehearsal and dance recital in their first costume according to the lineup on page 11. Dancers are to wear street shoes with their dance shoes and costume accessories (if any) in a clear gallon sized Ziploc bag with their full name on the outside of the bag - NO DANCE BAGS ARE TO BE USED - PLEASE. Additional costumes (if any) should be transported to and from the rehearsal & recital on hangers (preferably inside a garment or dry cleaning bag.) As mentioned - dance shoes and costume accessories are to be placed in a clear gallon sized Ziploc bag with their full name on the outside of the bag (you can puncture a hole in the bag and slip it over the corresponding costume hanger.) Never wash or iron costumes! To release wrinkles you can toss costumes in your dryer on low. Refer to the document (blue paper) we sent home with the costumes for more info. 2

Part 4: PICTURE DAY Donner Photographic Inc. will be at our studio to take pictures on Sunday, April 23 and Sunday, April 30. Please arrive 10 minutes early. See picture day schedules on page 10. Please make every effort to have your child attend their picture day. Group pictures will be taken first. If you are late your child will miss out on the group photo. There are no make-up days for group photos. If you do not plan on attending, please let us know. 239-261-2606- ext. 1 Individual pictures will be taken after the group pictures. Siblings and friends can also be taken together. Once your child s individual and/or sibling/friend pictures are done you are free to go. On picture day ALL dancers are to arrive fully dressed with hair and make-up completely done. If your child has more than one photo shoot in one day they are to arrive in their first costume according to their picture day schedule found on page 10. Additional costumes (if your child has multiple photo sessions that day) should be transported on hangers along with the corresponding shoes/accessories in labeled Ziploc bags attached to the hanger. For the sake of uniformity all dancers must wear their hair in a bun and follow the makeup guidelines outlined on pages 4 & 5. We can handle your child s hair and makeup on picture, rehearsal and recital days! Simply sign them up for Salon using the order form on page 12. If you sign your child up for Salon please arrive 30 minutes earlier than your scheduled picture time and bring them directly into the studio upon arrival. In order to ensure that all of the dancers have their attention completely focused on the photographer family members are not permitted into the photo sessions and in order to keep the noise level and traffic down in the studio parent/guardians are not permitted to wait in the waiting room. There will be a seating area for you outside of the studio. Due To Space Limitations - only 1 parent or guardian may accompany dancers on picture day. IMPORTANT: Please be sure dancers remember to bring ALL of their dance shoes and any costume accessories, (hats in their possession), hair clips, gloves etc ) on picture day. Donner Photographic will be at OUR STUDIO on May 10 th and 11 th from 4:00 8:00pm with prints of all of the photos that were taken of your child on picture day, available for purchase. There is no obligation to purchase photos. Our website has pictures from previous years. Part 5: HAIR, MAKEUP, SALON HAIR Uniform hairstyles are required for pictures, rehearsal and recital. All female students must wear their hair in a bun, with no hair on their face including bangs. Dancers are to wear only the headpieces included with their costumes (if any) which must be fastened securely to the head. 3

Invisible hairnets help make the bun look neat; and are sold at the front desk for $1. After the hairnets are in place the bun should be further secured by using U shaped hairpins which work better than bobby pins (check Walgreens or Sally Beauty Supply for them.) Dancers with very short hair must pull their hair away from their face in a short ponytail and bangs must be slicked back off of the forehead pinned down and sprayed well with super-hold hairspray to keep them in place. There are pictorials on our website and on the bulletin board in the waiting room that gives detailed instructions on bun making. MAKE-UP All female students are required to wear make-up for picture day, dress rehearsal and dance recital (vitally important to insure uniformity) and also helps prevent the dancers from looking washed out under the intense stage lighting. It also gives parents a chance to practice makeup application ahead of the big day! We understand that some parents are not comfortable with the idea of children wearing makeup however please be assured that it is part of their costume. Similar to Halloween - we wouldn t send our kitty cats out without their whiskers or nose! MAKEUP GUIDELINES: AGES 3 6 Keep the makeup simple on these little ones! This age group needs to be distracted when you are applying their makeup. You may want to have them sing their favorite song; anything that will shift their focus from the fact that you are poking them with makeup brushes. EYES: Use brown eye shadow on eye lid blending up to the crease this will help frame the eye and will make the lash line look fuller. White eye shadow can be used to highlight the brow bone under the eye brow. No mascara is necessary. Use a chocolate brown pencil liner on their upper lash line and the same liner under the eye but start at center of eye and go to the outside corner of the eye (applying liner only half way under eye help keep eyes looking large.) CHEEKS: Use medium rose tones for cheeks - nothing too bright or too dark. Take your brush and start at the hair line and sweep forward under the cheek bone and swirl upward over the apples of the cheeks (the apples are the part of the cheeks that extend out from the face when you smile.) Blend upwards to make sure blush color does not go lower than lip line on the cheek. Blend well to avoid any harsh lines. LIPS: Staying with medium rose color use a lip liner to outline lips then fill in the entire lip to keep your dancer s lipstick on longer, and then apply rose colored lipstick on top of that. AGES 7 18 EYES: Use brown eye shadow on eye lid blending up to the crease this will help frame the eye and will make the lash line look fuller. White eye shadow can be used to highlight the brow bone under the eye brow. Apply black or brown mascara and chocolate brown eye liner on top lash line. Colors can be applied more intensely for this age group. Adding gold eye shadow to inner corners of eye and underneath really makes eyes stand out! 4

CHEEKS: Use medium rose tones for cheeks-nothing too bright and nothing too dark. LIPS: Staying with medium rose color use a lip liner to outline lips then fill in entire lip to keep your dancer s lipstick on longer, and then apply rose colored lipstick on top of that. Please follow the guidelines above using the colors indicated being careful not to overdo it. SALON If you don t have confidence in yourself handling your dancer s hair/makeup or don t want to go to the expense of purchasing hair/makeup supplies we will take care of it all for you for a $20 fee. To reserve an appointment for your dancer simply fill out the recital order form on page 12. However if you do decide to handle the grooming on your own please do not wait until the last minute! Be sure to purchase your hair supplies and make-up well in advance of picture day so that you can practice. Hair and makeup is an art, just like dance Part 6: DRESS REHEARSAL - ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL DRESS-REHEARSAL ARRIVAL The dress rehearsal is Friday, May 12 th at: Palmetto Ridge H.S. which is located right off of Oil Well Road at: 1655 Victory Lane in Naples, 34120. All dancers are to arrive at 4:30pm sharp - fully dressed in their first costume according to the dress rehearsal/dance recital line-up on page 11. If you HAVE signed your dancer up for Salon, please arrive at 4:00pm and notify the ladies at the check-in table (that your child is here for Salon) and we will handle the rest! Attendance to the dress rehearsal is mandatory. We realize that it may be necessary for you to pick your child up early from school that day and we apologize in advance for the inconvenience this may present. Please arrive on time; we are on a very tight schedule. ***There will be no opportunity for you to finish getting your dancer ready. Dancers NOT signed up for Salon must arrive fully dressed with hair and make-up completely done or they will not be permitted beyond the checkpoint. Exceptions will not be made. After your dancer is checked in at the table, parents will then enter through the front doors of the auditorium where you can find a seat in the auditorium and wait for the dress rehearsal to begin. NOTE: Dancers 10+ years of age may be dropped off (at the check-in table) at 4:30 pm (4:00pm if signed up for salon) and picked up at 7:00 pm. Parents dropping off are asked to closely follow all of the other guidelines and please do not be late picking up! 5

DRESS-REHEARSAL DISMISSAL We will be starting the dress rehearsal promptly at 5:00pm with a run-through of the entire show; after the last performance there will be a quick run through of the finale. We expect to wrap up at 6:45pm. Once the last dancers exit the stage from the parents will head on foot to the checkpoint doors and wait for the dancers to be released (about 15 minutes.) Part 7: DRESS REHEARSAL GENERAL INFORMATION At the dress rehearsal dancers will become familiar with the auditorium s surroundings; they will learn their stage positions, rehearse their dance(s), and practice their entrances and exits to and from the stage - all of which will help them to feel more comfortable with their costumes, their performance(s) and being onstage in front of an audience at the dance recital. NOTE: The dress rehearsal is closed to the public. Only one parent/guardian per family is permitted to attend. We ask that you do not bring siblings (young or old) to the dress rehearsal. If it is impossible for you to arrange care for siblings and you must bring them with you; they are to remain quietly seated in the auditorium and carefully supervised at all times. FOOD & DRINKS (for audience members) We will be selling pizza, snacks (chips & candy) and drinks during the dress rehearsal for audience members. Concessions may be purchased with cash, check, debit or credit card. FOOD & DRINKS (for dancers) Senior dancers may come to the lobby to purchase food when time allows between dances. All other dancers however should arrive fed as they will not have the opportunity to come to the lobby to purchase food nor will parents have the ability to bring food backstage to their child. Despite arriving fed; the dancers (who cannot come to the concession stand) will undoubtedly get hungry backstage so please send your child with a few snacks. The best kind of snacks to send are colorless, non-sticky "neat" snacks; such as crackers, string cheese, pretzels, goldfish, simple sandwiches, or anything else that will cause the littlest amount of mess and cleanup. Please do not send any foods that will make fingers sticky or orange or turn tongues blue! PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY DRINKS We need to protect the costumes. Bottled water will be provided on rehearsal and recital day for all dancers and backstage personnel. Part 8: DANCE RECITAL - ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL DANCE RECITAL ARRIVAL -Dancers who HAVE signed up for Salon must arrive by 11:45am fully dressed in their first costume (if there are multiple costumes) with hair and makeup not done. -Dancers who HAVE NOT signed up for Salon must arrive by 12:30 pm fully dressed in their first costume (if there are multiple costumes) with hair and makeup completely done. 6

(Details on where to drop off your dancer when you arrive to the H.S. will be included in the final recital notice which will be sent home with your dancer the week of May 1-6) DANCE RECITAL DISMISSAL After the awards ceremony is over and the dancers leave the stage parents and family members will then head to the lobby to pick up (or purchase) balloon/flower orders (if any) and then go to the checkpoint doors (where you dropped off) and wait for the dancers to be released. NOTE: If you have guests who are leaving immediately please ask them to exit from the far end of the parking lot in order to keep the pickup area safe. Part 9: DANCE RECITAL GENERAL INFORMATION FOOD & DRINKS (for audience members) We will be selling chips, candy and drinks before, during and after the dance recital. Most items are $1. Concessions may be purchased with cash, check, debit or credit card. FOOD & DRINKS (for dancers) Dancers should arrive to the dance recital well fed; we don't want to make things more stressful for them with unnecessary hunger or fatigue. The dancers will be backstage for 3 hours and they WILL get hungry so please be sure to send your child with a few snacks following the same guidelines and suggestions as the dress rehearsal. Remember not to send any foods that will make fingers sticky or orange or turn tongues blue! Concessions will not be available for back stage dancers of any age at all on recital day. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY DRINKS We need to protect the costumes. Bottled water will be provided on rehearsal and recital day for all dancers and backstage personnel. AUDITORIUM RULES Please remain seated during the show and plan accordingly with your guests that this is treated as a professional performance. If you must leave the auditorium kindly do so between dances and please re-enter following the same rule. BACKSTAGE ETIQUETTE All dancers remain backstage during both the dress rehearsal and the dance recital and are never permitted inside the auditorium during the show. Family members and friends are never permitted backstage at any time. Please inform your family and guests of this rule. Dancers must respect each other s space and property so please encourage your child keep their belongings organized and to stay as quiet as possible while backstage. FINALE All students are required to participate in the finale and awards show. Please to do not come up to the stage during the finale to give your dancer balloons or flowers - this must be saved for after the show when your dancer is released through the checkpoint doors. 7

Part 10: DRESS REHEARSAL AND DANCE RECITAL PREPARATION PRE-PLANNING Please gather all costumes, accessories, and shoes, several days in advance so you ll know if something is missing. Make a checklist of your dancer s performances; listing their shoes and any costume accessories. We cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure you have everything you need. Dancers who forget their shoes or have missing costume accessories (headpieces, gloves, etc ) will not dance. Exceptions will not be made. Nail polish or jewelry (other than stud earrings) may NOT be worn for the rehearsal or the recital. BACKSTAGE ACTIVITIES We will be showing age appropriate movies for our youngest dancers and we encourage parents to send children with a deck of cards, books to read, coloring books and crayons, board game or other activity that will help keep the dancers busy while they are waiting to perform. Please, no markers, pens, glitter or glue! Older dancers may bring hand held electronic devices such as cell phones, IPods, DS s or anything else they wish to bring to help pass the time while they are waiting their turn onstage. It s important to label each item with your child s full name and send the items in a clear plastic bag with their full name on the outside of the bag in order to ensure the items are returned to you. Ave Maria Dance Academy will not be held responsible for lost belongings. Part 11: PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOGRAPHY *Parents are welcome to photograph and videotape the dress rehearsal, but PERSONAL FLASH CAMERAS OR VIDEO CAMERAS MAY NOT BE USED DURING THE RECITAL; the flashes are distracting and dangerous for the dancers, and videotaping is distracting to everyone! ~ Please Respect This Universal Theater Rule ~ The recital will be professionally videotaped by Hughes Video Productions and DVD s of the show can be pre-ordered using the recital order form on page 12. DVD s will be available for pick up at the studio June 1 st. You will be notified by email when they are ready. Please Advise Your Family And Friends: Not to talk during the show (voices are picked up by the video camera microphones.) Silence cell phones. Videotaping and flash photography are forbidden. Unhappy infants or children should be immediately taken out of the auditorium. 8

Class mothers are able to watch their children perform and will receive a FREE ticket and DVD. Other volunteers will watch the entire show and receive a FREE ticket.
