Central to 1 1/2 games ahead of the idle Detroit Tigers, who will now host the Yankees for the next three days after their one-game stop in Kansas City. A RECENT ODDITY--The Royals have dropped two in a row for the first time since July 27-28 (vs. Cleveland and Minnesota, respectively), posting a 19-4 mark between two-game slides...last night s loss to the Yankees essentially gave Kansas City a split of the 4-game set with New York from early June...KC still enters tonight with a 10-series unbeaten streak, going 9-0 with a split of a 2-game stop in Colorado... considering August is widely known as the dog days, KC has thrived during the month, posting a 17-6 ledger, while actually winning 19 of the last 25 going back to July and posting a Major League best 24-8 mark since all of this began on July 22, when the club entered play that night a full eight games down in the A.L. Central...last night s loss was just the fourth in the last 16 games here in Kauffman Stadium, as the club has turned around what began as a 21-25 mark here. ATTENDANCE CONTINUES TO CLIMB--The Royals drew 31,758 for last night s make-up affair against the Yankees, a contest that was originally slated for June 9 but was deluged...the gathering was the 10th crowd over 30,000 this year as Kansas City has now drawn 1,463,061 through the first 62 home dates, a per game average of 23,598...should the Royals keep up this average for the remaining 20 dates, KC would have its highest single-season attendance total since the 1993 campaign, when the club drew 1,934,578 over an 80-date home season...the Royals are currently on a pace for 1,911,418 fans this year. 32 LEFT ON REGULAR SEASON PLATE--The Royals enter tonight s contest with 32 games remaining on the regular season docket and a 72-58 record, which puts Kansas City 1 1/2 games up on Detroit in the Central Division standings...of the 32 games, 17 are against clubs who are currently at or below.500, including these Twins (3), the Rangers (3), White Sox (7) and Boston (4)...as for remaining opponents with winning records, the Royals still have Detroit (6), Cleveland (6) and the Yankees (3). GORDO CHASING BOGGS--Alex Gordon s first-inning blast on Saturday night was the 117th home run of his career...he s closing in on a Hall of Famer as Gordo is now one roundtripper shy of Wade Boggs, who hit 118 during his Hall of Fame career and currently stands as the all-time home run leader for a Nebraska native. CENTRALLY SPEAKING--The Royals resume play against the A.L. Central tonight, with this the first of six straight against their divisional brethren...kc will step out of the division again next week with three here against the Rangers and three in New York, before heading to Detroit for an important 3-game set that begins on September 8 and kicks off a race to the finish in which 16 of the last 20, including the final 13 will be within the Central...things started rough for Kansas City in intradivision play, going just 5-15 through the first 20, but on May 21 the Royals beat the White Sox which jumpstarted a stretch in which KC has gone 23-11 in the last 34 games within the Central, including wins in 10 of the last 13. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL S ELITE--Wade Davis extended his scoreless inning streak to an active big league best 22.2 with a scoreless eighth on Friday in Texas... his season ERA of 0.80 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings this year, just ahead of the Cardinals Pat Neshek at 0.81...the last run Davis allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 44.0 innings for a 0.20 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 48 outings (51.0 innings) for a 0.35 ERA, while fanning 82...he has struck out at least one hitter in each of his last 16 appearances, while he nearly made it four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. THE BEST BACK END GOING--While the typical back end of the Royals bullpen was not employed in the last two games in Arlington, much of Kansas City s recent success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...they have combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 52.1 innings in this 24-6 span for a 0.52 ERA while fanning 55 and holding the opponents to a collective.158 average (28-for-177)...Herrera has totaled 12.2 shutout innings over KC s last 30 games, while he has 21.0-straight scoreless frames overall, which spans his last 21 outings... the only pitcher in baseball with a longer streak is Davis, who worked a scoreless eighth Friday night and is in the midst of a 24-game streak with 22.2-straight shutout innings, which includes 15.2 since July 22...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 15.2 innings (1.72 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 15 of 16 save chances, including his 14th in a row in the series-opener Friday.
