Preschool/Youth Activities MINI PASSPORT TO ADVENTURE The cities of Crystal, New Hope and Robbinsdale have joined together to offer preschoolers 3-5 years (must be 3 by January 1, 2010) a wonderful adventure. Each class will be packed with games, crafts, projects and making new friends. All classes will meet at the Crystal Community Center. Pre-registration required; space is limited. Note: These classes are not parent child. Fee: $8/class residents of Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale $11/class non-residents DINOSAUR DISCOVERY Journey back to the age of the dinosaurs. Search for bones, make your own dinosaur, read a story and have a dino-mite time! Register by June 29. KID SMART (Activity 5973) How should you react when approached by a harmful stranger or the local bully? Master Malone, a martial arts expert, teaches youth how to respond quickly to no win situations. Participants, ages 5-12, will learn how to take action (including how to get out of holds and what to say) and how to show the confidence needed to take control of the situation. MUSKETEERS FENCING CLASS (Activity 6055) Youth ages 6-9 will learn real fencing skills while having fun in our special Musketeers fencing class. This program, provided by MN Sword Play, will introduce children to the fundamentals of fencing. With an emphasis on skill building, concentration, self discipline and fun, these classes are designed to enhance motor skill, social and perceptual growth by teaching safe, age-appropriate foil fencing skills to each child. All equipment is provided. Note: Friday will include a mini-competition and will run from 10:30 am-12:30 pm. Register by June 28. Learn about chemistry through the science of bubbles. Investigate the world of physics as you learn about momentum and energy. Then we will explore nature as we learn about biology. Each class is filled with exciting experiments and projects that you will take home. Register by June 7. Fee: $44 residents of Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale $50 non-residents SHOCKING ELECTRICAL SCIENCE (Activity 5984) In Electrifying Science youth Grades 2-6 (entering) will be learning all about electricity and the flow of electrons. Construct electrical circuits using wires, batteries, motors, buzzers, lemons and more. Test everyday items to decide if they are conductors or insulators. Then build battery-powered gadgets, including an electromagnet, to take home. Register by August 13. Learn about the history of flight as we experiment with Bernoulli s Principle. Investigate aerodynamics as you design, build and fly your own flying machine and paper airplanes. Lastly, if the weather and wind permit, you will build and launch your own rocket. Register by August 20. OUTDOOR SKILLS AND THRILLS Youth ages 10-14, are you looking for an outdoor adventure? We ve got just the camps for you! These camps will give you the chance to experience the great outdoors. Instructional staff is provided by Three Rivers Park District. Parents must provide transportation to and from French Regional Park. Make sure to indicate the session you are registering for. Where: French Regional Park, Visitor Center, 12605 County Road 9 Note: Resident rate is for residents of Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale Session 1: Fishing (Activity 5975) Enjoy the art of fishing. Participants will learn fishing safety, proper casting and bait selection. Our group will fish for sun fish, crappies and bass. Register by May 28. Monday, June 14... 9:30-11:30 am Fee: $10 resident $16 non-resident Session 2: Canoeing (Activity 5976) Join us as we canoe across Medicine Lake while learning proper paddling strokes including how to steer, go straight and get in and out of a canoe. Wednesday, August 18... 9:30-11:30 am Fee: $10 resident $16 non-resident SKATEBOARD CLINIC (Activity 5983) This camp is intended for kids ages 6-12 of all abilities to learn skateboarding in a fun and safe environment. Whether you are just learning, ready to learn more advanced tricks, Sports Unlimited Skateboarding camp is for you. Individual skills/ tricks taught: balance, stopping, turning, ollie, nollie, heelflip and kickflips. Skateboard and helmet required. Recommended: knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards (all recommended gear available at no charge if you don t have your own). Bring water bottle, snack, sunscreen and a great attitude! Participants will have a hands-on experience in clowning and other circus arts. Develop a clown character, movement, mime, comic timing and acting skits. Juggling, make-up, costuming and prop construction will also be included. Put together your own costume and bring it along. There will be performance at the end of the last class. Through the use of various painting techniques, you will learn about different painting styles such as Modern, Mondrian, Impressionism and more while creating your own special piece of art. Small projects and technique drills are completed as you have fun creating paintings to take home and display. All necessary supplies are included. Will also use different cultural styles like Aborigninal and Oaxacan. Have fun expressing your creativity while building unique structures. All necessary supplies are included. Friday, July 23...9:30 am-noon Fee: $22 residents of Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale $28 non-residents SLEEP OVER BAG (Activity 5928) Youth ages 6-12, rock your next slumber party, with the coolest sleep over bag. This bag will be personalized with your very own style and has a sturdy drawstring added for easy carrying and storage. Embellishments can include name in fabric as well as ribbon, fringe and any other cool ideas you have. Bring a pillow case to be transformed into a work of art to be used for years to come. Makes a great gift, too! Instructor recommends either a solid color or a small repeating print, but not a picture on the pillow case because there is not as much room for creativity. Tuesday, August 3...9:30-11:30 am Fee: $13 residents of Crystal, New Hope $19 non-residents SAFETY CAMP Join this popular three-day camp where participants will learn about safety while having a great time! Safety topics will include fire safety, internet safety, water safety, as well as many others. The campers will see a K-9 demonstration and get up close to a National Guard helicopter! Children must be entering grades 3-5 in September. A graduation ceremony and dinner will take place at 5 pm on August 12. Campers will be randomly placed in groups. Safety Camp is sponsored by the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department, New Hope Police Department and West Metro Fire-Rescue District. (The camp will be the same format as 2009, with many returning speakers). It is important for the camper to be in attendance. Register with the New Hope Recreation Department at 763-531-5151. BATON TWIRLING Participants as young as age 4 will learn about the sport of baton twirling through this class. Join our NEW instructor Jodi as she teaches your child the skills of baton twirling. The class will teach techniques using batons, flags and hoop batons. If you are new to the class you must start with the beginner class, after that you will enroll in the intermediate class. Registered participants will need their own baton to participate in the class; order forms will be available the first night of class. Register by April 16. Beginner Class: (Activity 5990) Thursdays, April 29-June 3... 6:00-6:30 pm Intermediate Class (must take beginner class): (Activity 5991) Thursdays, April 23-June 3... 6:30-7:00 pm Fee: $21 residents/session $27 non-resident/session BATON PERFORMANCE AND COMPETITION Class is open to participants who have taken at least two sessions of the Baton Twirling class. The class will learn dance/ twirl routines to perform at parades, shows and competitions. Members from this class have taken first place in the 6-state regional competition and placed in the top 10 in national competition. Additional costume fee may apply. Details given in class. Parents may observe the last class in each session. Register by April 16. AGES 7+ (Activity 5993) Thursdays, April 23-June 3... 7:00-8:00 pm AGES 7+ (Activity 5994) Fee: $42/session resident $48/session non-resident DANCE PROGRAM Crystal Recreation is offering an 8-week Summer Dance Program from June through July. During this summer program you will learn dance steps and terms while working on routines for the end-of-the-session presentation. Shoes are preferred depending on the class, but are not required. All classes meet at the Crystal Community Center, due to room size, class is limited to participants only. Minimum: 7/maximum: 14. Shoe order forms will be provided during the first class. Classes are taught by Julia Carlson. Register by May 28. TAP & BALLET: Ages 3 1 2-5 (Activity 5986) No previous dance experience required. Students will learn the basics of tap and ballet techniques while using these techniques in combinations. Tap and ballet shoes are preferred but not required. Thursdays, June 10-July 29... 6:00-6:30 pm Fee: $36 residents $42 non-residents TAP & BALLET: Ages 6-8 (Activity 5987) No previous dance experience required. This program will give you the instruction you need to catch, throw, scoop and cradle through non-contact lacrosse, also known as Soft Lacrosse. Staff will teach the fundamental skills of lacrosse using small group activities (based on age and skill level), scrimmages and fun games. Stick and ball provided.
