Makfi Challenge Stakes 2014 With the Group 1 Makfi Challenge Stakes just 29 days away we felt it timely to look at some of the high profile runners which feature in the entries a month out, and as we look to gain a closer understanding of who might claim New Zealand s first Group 1 race of the 2014-15 racing season. By the outstanding Coolmore Stud sire Fastnet Rock, Albany Reunion is owned by Watson Bloodstock and trained at Pukekohe by Nigel Tiley. From day one Albany Reunion or Lewis as he is affectionately known around the stable has always shown above average ability and those who have broken, pre-trained, ridden and trained the horse have always been confident the horse would measure up to good company. Albany Reunion was withdrawn from the Premier Sale at Karaka and sent to Lyndhurst Farm to be prepared for the Ready to Run Sale for two-year-olds where he failed to reach his reserve. The rest, as they say, is history where the horse now possessing a record of 4 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, and a fourth from his 8 starts with $190,925 in stakes. Black Type Performances 1st ARC Easter Handicap Gr.1 1600m 3rd ARC Newmarket Handicap Listed 1200m 4th WRC Telegraph Handicap Gr.1 1200m Summary One of the most lightly raced horses aiming for the Makfi Challenge Stakes, Albany Reunion has matured nicely during his break and has been patiently handled to date. Track conditions will play a big part in the horse s chances come 30 August, but there is no doubt that given a reasonable surface, the ability is there and he is sure to be in the mix. Albany Reunion is on the second line of betting with the NZ TAB at $10 for the win. It seemed both reasonable and quite appropriate that the first horse we profile over the next four weeks should be the home-bred gelding Albany Reunion, whose last start was back on the 12 April and saw him collect his first Group 1 victory after just eight career starts. Did You Know... Goldmine Stallion Match G1 Goldmine offers breeders a stalllion match service where you can complete a proposed mating between your mare and one of our stallions as another tool in your decision on which stallion is the best selection for your mare. Based on the concept of Dig for Gold where Gold has been found before, Goldmine believes it makes sense that your breeding plans should look to replicate pedigrees of champion runners and the analysis should look at the entire pedigree. Once you have used this tool you can contact Gareth Smith on 027 292 9089 to go over more details and ensure that you are selecting the right stallion, factoring in other details such as size, conformation, temperament, what the stallion typically throws and how he can improve your mare. You can find a link to this tool on each of the Westbury Stud stallion pages Arion Automatic Stud Feed Westbury Stud stallion pages are automatically updated daily via Arion, meaning you can keep up to date with exactly how their progeny are performing. On each stallion s page you just click on the STUD RECORD button to view their leading progeny, and all progeny statistics.
Goldmine Stallion Match How Do I Use It? To use the tool you simply click on the link on the stallion page. 1. You select a Stallion from the drop down list 2. Type your mare s name in the Dam box and press Enter or the [...] button 3. Select your mare on the mare selection page (or add it to the database if it is missing) 4. Press the Start Search button and your results will be displayed on the left CSI or Common Similarity Index A measure of how close the pedigree of the Graded Stakes Winner matches the hypo-mating. In general, values above 18 indicate a strong similarity. If the results list shows 4 or more horses with CSI of 18 or above, it is usually a good mating. If it shows 2 or more horses with CSI above 20, it is usually an exceptional mating. E is for Exact matches This column shows a count of the number of ancestors in the 5-gen pedigree which appear in Exactly the same position. A 20/20 Mating: A 20/20 mating occurs when a pattern has two or more Graded Stakes Winners with CSI values above 20. This indicates that this pedigree is exceptional as there are at least two superior horses with a very similar pattern. So what do the results mean? Aptitude Profile (Red Dots) The Aptitude Profile shows the Age and Distance range of Stakeswinners bred with this pattern. The larger the Red Dot, the more winners in that category. You can place your mouse over a Red Dot to see a list of horses that won in that category. Results List This list will appear on the left side of the page after you click the Start Search button. It shows Graded Stakes winning horses that have a similar pedigree to your proposed mating.
