Bill Bates Stadium (6,000) Pineville, La. Radio: Cenla Broadcasting, KZMZ 96.9-FM (Hymie Bradford, Play-by-Play Steve Boniol, Color Analyst ) Rebels seek return to playoffs for second straight season One year removed from their first trip to the Class 5A playoffs in seven seasons, the Pineville Rebels look for a return trip to the postseason in 2015. After losing their season opener on the road in 2014, the Rebels won five of their next six games and landed a spot in the playoffs despite dropping their final three games of the regular season. Seeded No. 29, the Rebels lost in the first round to eventual runner-up Destrehan. Limited experience returns, but Rebels boast several studs The Rebels return just seven starters off last season s team, including just three on the defensive side of the football. However, on offense, three of the team s stalwarts are back. Junior fullback Landon King and senior wingback Jarious Green return as a 1-2 tandem in the backfield after combining to rush for more 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2014. The 6-foot, 215-pound Green was a two-way standout, playing extensively in the defensive backfield as well as at running back. This year, however, he ll significantly reduce his responsibilities on defense, which should allow him to be more explosive and productive in 2015. King, a physical 6-1, 215-pound downhill runner, led the Rebels in both rushing and receiving last season and appears poised to become the first 1,000-yard rusher at Pineville since Derrick Milton in 2009. Joining them in the offensive backfield is senior quarterback Clayton Wider Jr., who looks to become a more consistent threat passing the ball while also being the trigger-man of the Rebels flexbone option attack. Senior guard Dakota Cross is the only returning starter on the offensive line. Defensively, senior middle linebacker Jacob Joffrion, who finished second on the team last season with 70 tackles, returns to anchor the 5-2 front of new defensive coordinator John Muder, a former standout linebacker at Pineville and Louisiana College. Joining Joffrion as returning starters on defense are senior cornerback Aaron Johnson (who led Pineville with two interceptions in 2014) and senior nose tackle Cha kel Williams.

Week 1 Pineville Rebels vs. Captain Shreve Gators Friday, Sept. 4 7 p.m. Offense switches to Georgia Tech flexbone formation Paul Johnson has built his career as a successful offensive coach while remaining one of the few coaches to rely on the flexbone triple option. Johnson, a former Navy assistant, first became a head coach at Georgia Southern. Johnson then returned to Navy and most recently to Georgia Tech, where he s been the head coach since 2008, making the Orange Bowl two times. This past offseason, the Rebels coaching staff adopted Johnson s flexbone as the team s main offensive identity, switching from a mostly I-formation and single-back attack. Wider has been tabbed as the team s main trigger-man in the flexbone, while fellow senior Kyle Adams also is expected to take snaps. Defensive coordinator John Muder returns home to Pineville John Muder is back home in the cardinal and white. The 1999 graduate of Pineville High School has returned to his alma mater as the Rebels defensive coordinator after spending the past five seasons as an assistant at Breaux Bridge. ROBBIE MARTIN Head coach, 7th season Northwestern State, 1991 24-33 overall at Pineville Robbie Martin is a name synonymous with Pineville football. He s been around the game and the team for the better part of three decades. A former player and defensive coordinator before becoming head coach, Martin bleeds cardinal and white. Martin was a standout offensive lineman at Pineville High, playing for the legendary Don Shows, before becoming a four-year letterman for Sam Goodwin at Northwestern State. Martin and the Demons won the Southland Conference championship in 1988. After serving as a student assistant under Goodwin in Natchitoches, Martin was an assistant at Buckeye High School for four years, serving as offensive line coach and defensive coordinator, before returning to his alma mater at Pineville. A standout linebacker who played for Herbie Smith, Muder became one of the best linebackers to ever suit up for Louisiana College during his standout four-year career with the Wildcats. A two-time all-conference player at LC, Muder finished his career with 181 career tackles. His total of 100 tackles as a senior in 2003 still ranks fourth in school history. Muder previously was defensive coordinator at Breaux Bridge, helping the Tigers to five consecutive Class 4A playoff appearances. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals in 2011, and were knocked out of the playoffs by state power Neville in three of the five years. Muder brings the 50 defense to D.C. Bill Bates Stadium Muder hopes bringing some of the concepts and schemes he learned during his five years in Breaux Bridge can help rejuvenate the Rebels defense as they compete in one of the state s toughest districts. The 50 defense features a five-man front, two linebackers and four players in the secondary. The interior of the defensive front features two defensive tackles and a nose tackle, flanked by two defensive ends that are essentially hybrid outside linebackers who line up on the line of scrimmage. The middle of the defense features two linebackers and two safeties, with a cornerback on either side. Muder s new defense features a number of young players looking to make an immediate impact, as only seven seniors are on the Rebels two-deep depth chart. Offensive line has a massive hole to fill with Ford s graduation Last year s Pineville offense was fairly simple run the ball behind massive left tackle Cody Ford. The 6-4, 320-pound Ford could either dominate the defensive end in front of him or get up to the second level to punish linebackers. He was a dominant force who helped the Rebels rush for more than 2,000 yards last season. A three-star tackle, Ford was one of Louisiana s top 30 prospects and one of the top While with the Rebels, Martin served as the 60 offensive tackles in the nation, according to 247Sports.com. After graduating in May, defensive coordinator under both Herbie Smith and Mike Richard from 1995 to 2009 before taking over as he reported to Norman, Oklahoma, and has made an immediate impact on the Oklahoma Sooners offensive line. Ford is fighting for a starting spot as a true freshman and is exhead coach at his alma mater. pected to provide immediate depth his first year on campus. Martin became the interim head coach following Unfortunately, the Rebels don t have Ford this year or anyone like him. Ford is Richard s resignation four games into the 2009 season now playing at the University of Oklahoma, and Pineville s front five averages only 215 and succeeded him full time the following season. This pounds. The only returning starter on the front line is senior right guard Dakota Cross. season will be Martin s sixth as the Rebels full-time The undersized, 215-pound guard will provide valuable leadership and experience on a head coach. unit that is lacking both.

Louisiana Tech, 2005 Pineville High to hold moment of silence prior to kickoff Pineville High School will honor the late Captain Shreve head football coach Richard Lary with a moment of silence prior to kickoff of Friday night s season opener. Lary died of an apparent heart attack suffered on campus in April. Lary, 49, had been a teacher and coach in Caddo Parish for nearly three decades. He began his career in 1988 at Woodlawn High School before making stops at Huntington, C.E. Byrd and eventually Captain Shreve. In 2009, Lary left his position as defensive coordinator to Mike Suggs at Byrd to become the head football coach at Captain Shreve. During his six-year tenure with the Gators, Lary compiled a 25-38 record and led Captain Shreve to the playoffs three times. Pineville coach Robbie Martin, who met Lary in 2009 when both were firstyear head coaches, said he was shocked when he heard the news of Lary s death. He had always been a super nice guy, Martin said. It was a shock to me and everyone who knew him when that happened. We had a tremendous sorrow for his family and the whole Captain Shreve football organization. Rebels, Gators no strangers to one another on football field When Pineville and Captain Shreve walk onto the field at D.C. Bill Bates Stadium Friday night, many of the players will recognize faces on the other sideline. Friday night s matchup marks the third consecutive season and the fifth time in the last seven years the two teams will meet. The two teams have split the previous four meetings, with Captain Shreve winning the first game, 16-7, in 2009 and taking last year s matchup 30-7. Pineville won two consecutive games, 49-21 in 2010, and 17-14 in 2013. When the two teams played in 2009 and 2010, they were both members of District 1-5A. They did not meet in 2011 or 2012. Rebels remember terrible feeling to start 2014 season Pineville was served a huge chunk of humble pie during its season-opening loss to the Gators in 2014. The Rebels turned the ball over five times as Captain Shreve ran away with a 30-7 victory. The Rebels were shut out for the first 46 minutes of the game, as Captain Shreve built a 30-0 lead, before senior running back Shaquille Harbor broke free for a 62-yard touchdown. Although the Rebels defense only gave up 150 yards to Captain Shreve, they were done in by constant turnovers, including two on consecutive plays that completely turned the momentum of the game. A Clayton Wider Jr. interception was returned 50 yards for a score to give Captain Shreve a 14-0 lead, and the Rebels lost a fumble on their next offensive play. Just over three minutes after scoring their first touchdown of the game, the Gators led by three scores. Pineville finished the game with two interceptions and three lost fumbles. Bryant Sepulvado era at Captain Shreve begins on the road Captain Shreve didn t have to look far for its new head coach, promoting defensive coordinator Bryant Sepulvado to replace his best friend following Lary s death. Sepulvado had been an assistant for Lary during each of his six seasons at Captain Shreve and had worked as an assistant in Caddo Parish for seven years prior to that. While the Gators are moving forward, they ll also honor their fallen former coach by wearing RL decals on their helmets.
