THE MEN BEHIND THE SCENES Jim Wyllie You ve seen him rolling by in that little white golf cart, John Deere hat, occasional cigarette in hand, and sometimes a scowl on his face. However, what most don t know are the many hours a day, seven days a week that Jim dedicates to our club and the sport of trap shooting. We come, we shoot, we go home. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy one of the best clubs in California but it doesn t just happen magically. Approximately 50 acres and two ranges to manage are a challenge to say the least. Jim has been a trap shooter since he was old enough to pick up a gun. According to ATA archives, his first registered shoot year was in 1960 and with 500 targets under his belt his average was 75%. A few years later, he won the 1968 Golden West Grand Handicap Championship with a score of 98 from the 21 yard line. Rumor has it that he was on squad #259 and walked away with over $35,000. Those sure were the good ole days. Fast-forward to today, he has shot over 220,000 ATA registered targets. Jim has been generous with his experience and knowledge and has helped more than a few youth and adult shooters to improve their skills and scores. When Jim was a young man shooting at the club, then President, Manuel Mingoia told him that he would run this club someday. Jim would probably grumble and say that Manuel cursed him with that premonition. But deep down Jim loves this club, loves shooting, and is proud at the end of a successful shoot. So if you see him buzzing by, say Hi, say thank you, and tell him you enjoyed the shoot. Jim McCullough and Warren Price These two are our unsung heroes. They are here every week making sure that the trap machines are maintained and running smoothly. It is no easy task to get down in those trap houses with the steep stairs and spiders but they do it, every week. They are often faced with machines that are just not functioning perfectly, but they figure it out and get it fixed. They are here for every shoot to make sure that the machines keep throwing targets. So, if you don t like how the targets are being thrown, feel free to go visit them in the shop. But beware, complainers have been known to go in and never come back out.
