AQUATICS We offer a wide range of swim lesson options, year-round, for every level. Our therapy pool hosts numerous aqua aerobics courses, while our main pool boasts a pirate ship, two giant waterslides, a lazy river, condensed lap swim and much more. AQUATICS Class Descriptions Stage A Parent/Child Water Discovery: Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Milestones include 1.) Encouraging parents to set developmentally appropriate expectations; 2.) Introducing and emphasizing basic water safety to parents, providing a positive family experience; 3.) Building relationships between parents and children by providing fun and interaction in the water. Stage B Water Exploration: Children focus on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Milestones include 1.) Encouraging children to move purposefully in the water in response to visual and verbal cues using toys and floatation devices; 2.) Emphasizing basic aquatic safety to parents; 3.) Building relationships between parents and children by providing opportunities for fun and interaction in the water. Stage 1 Water Acclimation: Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. Milestones include 1.) Exploring the aquatic environment and personal skills with instructor help; 2.) Developing basic skills to propel and glide through the water with instructor help; 3.) Learning basic aquatic safety and accepting some of the responsibility for safe practices. Stage 2 Water Movement: Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. Milestones include: 1.) Exploring the aquatic environment and personal skills without instructor help; 2.) Developing basic skills to propel and glide through the water without instructor help; 3.) Learning basic aquatic and boating safety and accepting some of the responsibility for safe practices. Stage 3 Preschool Water Stamina: Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Milestones include: 1.) Integrating arm action, leg action and rythmic breathing in back and front glides; 2.) Developing forward movement on the front and back; 3.) Practicing skills and safety techniques in deep water. Stage 4 Stroke Introduction: Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Milestones include: 1.) Developing the front crawl and back crawl; 2.) Introducing components of the breaststroke and butterfly; 3.) Practicing safety techniques in deep water. Stage 5 Stroke Development: Introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Milestones include: 1.) Developing stamina in the front crawl and back crawl; 2.) Developing the breaststroke and butterfly; 3.) Building endurace techniques for deep-water safety. Stage 6 Stroke Mechanics: Refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as a part of healthy lifestyle. Milestones include: 1.) Developing endurance in the competitive strokes; 2.) Developing skills related to competitive swimming like flip turns LAP SWIM AT CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL Members of the Y are able to use the Centennial High School pool at no fee for lap swimming, simply by checking in with their Y member card. Centennial is equipped with six 25-yd lap lanes and is staffed by YMCA lifeguards. Swimmers must be 17 years old.
