The 2012-13 season represents the 104th season of men s basketball at Gustavus. Founded in 1904, the men s basketball program has mounted an overall record of 1366-945, and a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) mark of 900-543. Since the inception of the MIAC, the Gusties have amassed at least a share of 17 conference titles, the second most in the league. The program has made 22 MIAC playoff appearances, including 12 consecutively, and also has participated in the NCAA Tournament 13 times. LIVE ACTION... All Gustavus Adolphus men s basketball games will be broadcast live on KNUJ Radio AM 860 and KRDS 95.5 with Tom Wheeler handling the play-by-play broadcast. MEET THE GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF... Head coach Mark Hanson begins his 23rd season at the helm of the Gustavus men s basketball program. During his tenure, Hanson has directed the team to seven MIAC championships, 20 MIAC Playoff appearances, and 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season. With 423 career wins, Hanson is the all-time winningest coach in Gustavus men s basketball history. His.695 winning percentage ranks sixth on the all-time list. Assistant coach Josh Drinkall begins his sixth season as the lead assistant for the Gustie men s basketball team. Primarily working with the defense, Drinkall has coached two MIAC All-Defensive players in his first five years. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Drinkall worked as an assistant coach for six seasons at Winona State University where he was a part of the 2006 NCAA Division II National Championship and a second place finish in 2007. Jeff Fish begins his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Gustavus Adolphus men s basketball team. Prior to joining the Gustavus staff, Fish was an assistant coach for Bethany Lutheran College from 2007-2009. RETURNERS AND NEWCOMERS... That core group of seniors includes three of the top five scorers from last year s team in Ben Biewen (Sr., Edina, Minn.), Jim Hill (Sr., Edina, Minn.), and Blake Shay (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.). Reed Sallstrom (Sr., Winthrop, Minn.) will also add experience as a returning senior. Outside of the four seniors, the Gusties return just 20 points and 192 minutes of play from last year s squad. Lone junior Jordan Dick (Jr., Wabasha, Minn.) will look to add production to the Gustie lineup, while Isaac Tapp (So., Stewartville, Minn.) will serve as the team s primary ball handler after playing in eight games last season. Sophomores Martin Feddersen (So., Winona, Minn.), Brian Jacobs (So., Lake Crystal, Minn.), and Jed Kreuser (So., Jordan, Minn.) are all expect to contribut in their second season. Newcomers Matt Humphries (So., Maple Grove, Minn.), Dane Schmid (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.), Sergio Najera (Fr., New Prague, Minn.), Connor Perry (Fr., Hibbing, Minn.), Chad Poppen (Fr., St. Peter, Minn.), and Brody Ziegler (Fr., Mankato, Minn.) will also look to make an impact in their first collegiate varsity season. LAST TIME OUT... For the second time in the past three games, the Gustavus men s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in conference play. The Gusties fell to Bethel 60-59 on Wednesday night at Gus Young Court after holding a 37-31 advantage at halftime. After nine lead changes and eight ties, the Gusties opened up a six point lead heading in to halftime with the score at 37-31. A 16-4 run to begin the second half enabled the Royals to open up their largest lead of the game at 47-41 with 13:14 to play. Back-to-back three-pointers by Jim Hill on the next two possessions tied the game at 47 with 12:02 to go. A 7-0 run for Bethel put them on top before the Gusties countered with an 8-3 run to cut the Bethel lead to one with :48 seconds remaining. The Gusties had a chance to win on the final possession of the game, but were unable to convert as the Royals walked away with the win. Hill led the way for Gustavus with 13 points and five rebounds. Blake Shay followed Hill with 12 points and three rebounds, while Ben Biewen added 11 points. Jordan Dick found double-figures for the third consecutive night with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for- 4 from three-point range. ABOUT THE BEAVERS... Buena Vista enters Saturday s match-up on a three-game winning streak. After beginning the year 1-3, the Beavers have come storming back with wins over Morningside (95-82), Northwestern (94-73), and Crown (96-46). As a team, the Beavers average 81.3 points per game, including putting up an average of 95.0 points per game over their last three contests. Compared to giving up an average of 71.6 points per game, Buena Vista has a scoring margin of +9.7 on the season. The Beavers are led by six-foot seven-inch Wes Nordquist. Nordquist leads the team with 18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He also averages 2.9 assists per game and has recorded a team-high nine blocks on the season. Two other players average double figures in the scoring column. Cole Darrow averages 11.9 points to go along with 5.1 rebounds per game, while Troy Ticknor scores 10.6 points per game. TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW... Last season, Gustavus and Buena Vista opened the season against one another in thrilling fashion. Trailing by 21 points with 10:54 remaining, the Gusties came roaring back to tie the game up with :07 seconds remaining on a deep Blake Shay three-pointer. Following a Buena Vista turnover, Seth Anderson put the finishing touches on a record-setting 45-point night with a jumper as time expired to give Gustavus the season-opening 98-96 win. IN NEED OF A SPARK... With a 2-4 start to the 2012-13 season, the Gusties are in need of a spark to build momentum heading into the Christmas break and grueling month of January. To get that spark, the Gusties will have to look to their bench. In the two wins this season, the bench has scored 34 points for an average of 17.0 per game. In the four losses, the bench has scored a combined 39 points for an average of 9.8 points per game. ON THIS DATE... The last time Gustavus played on December 8th, the Gusties pulled out an 83-73 win over Macalester in St. Paul. Phil Wirtjes led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Jim Hill followed with 16 points and three rebounds. Twenty-third Season Overall: 424-190 At Gustavus: 424-190 Office: 507-933-7037 Email: mjh44@gustavus.edu Head Coach Mark Hanson Mark Hanson is entering his 23rd season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men s basketball program. During that time, Hanson has directed the team to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season. Last season, Hanson led the Gusties to their first MIAC Championship since the 2004-05 season, sharing the 2011-12 title with St. Thomas. Gustavus went 20-8 overall and 16-4 in the MIAC. The Black and Gold went on to defeat Saint John s 64-52 at home in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs before falling 66-62 in overtime to St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship held in St. Paul. The Gusties earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season, drawing Wheaton College in the first round. Gustavus season ended in the first round with a 68-60 loss to the Thunder in River Falls, Wis. MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 19 times, reaching the finals 14 years and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship on seven occassions. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 27 players who have garnered 47 All-Conference honors, four MIAC Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached one Jostens Award Finalist (Trevor Wittwer, 2008), which recognizes the top Division III men s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement. Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All- America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection. A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program director at the college. Hanson, a native of Dodge Center, Minnesota, is married to Deb Johnson. Mark and Deb have two children, Hans and Annika, and live in St. Peter. In the 2010-11 season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an 89-78 win over Saint Mary s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Division III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, as becomes just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau.
