HEMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD BOOK! Jl Helms Athletic Foundation has prepared and issued this eighteenth annual : -edition of the Southern California High School Track and Field record in the interest of high school athletics. This book lists outstanding performances and records made by Southern California's high school Track and Field athletes during the 1954 season. The facts and records listed in this booklet have been gathered from sources which are believed to be authentic. Information has been provided by high school coaches and student newspaper sports editors and much information has been gathered from Southern C a lifornia newspapers. Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles, California, is sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The Foundation was established in 1936. One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording achievements of athletes and athletic teams in all sports and all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field record book, as are all athletic record books of similar nature, was prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation, under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed to schools, press, radio, television, athletic coaches and officials, without charge. This eighteenth annual Track and Field record book contains best marks of Los Angeles City and C.I.F. Track and Field athletes over the past years, past C.I.F. and City championship teams, and present City, State and National interscholastic track and field records. There is also listed the Track and Field Athletes of the Year, for both City and C.I.F., selections which have been made for the past eighteen years. "BILL SWISSHELM, EVERETT JACKSON SELECTED" TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF YEAR FOR 1954 _[_ Two of Southern California's top sprinters, Everett Jackson, Manual Arts High School, and Bill Swisshelm, Santa Ana High, were chosen as Track and Field Athletes of the Year for 1954 by the Helms Athletic Foundation All-Southern California Board of Athletics. Jackson was named the top performer from among Los Angeles City schools, while Swisshelm was selected from the ranks of the Southern California C.I.F. high schools. Jackson led Manual Arts to the Los Angeles City Track and Field title, defeating Jefferson High, title holder for the past five years. Jackson flashed to victories in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and anchored the winning mile relay team. Everett's best times were 9.8 and 21.5 for the two sprints. Jackson also took a fourth place in the 220-yard dash at the State meet. Bill Swisshelm, fleet Santa Ana flash, was a consistent winner for his team throughout the season in both dashes and added a national interscholastic record in the ISO-yard low hurdles to boot. Swisshelm won both dashes in the C.I.F. Southern Section finals in 10.0 and 22.3 recording best times of 9.6 and 20.8 during the season. Bill set his national mark of 18.7 for the 180- yard lows at the Compton Invitational, April 24. Bill collected a pair of thirds at the State meet in the 100 and 220 dashes. For having been named Track and Field athletes of the year, both boys will have their names engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy, lodged in Helms Hall. Jackson was coached by Charles Toney, who directed Manual Arts to its first City Championship in Track and Field since 1934. Toney also coached that team, winning the title at Los Angeles High School. Swisshelm 1 s coach, Reece Greene, directed Santa Ana to a tie for the C.I.F. Southern Section title with Centennial High School. Santa Ana also won the C.I.F. title in 1953. -1-
