ON THIS DATE IN PHILLIES HISTORY: May 1, 1883: In the franchise s first game ever, the Phillies fell to the Providence Grays, 4-3, at Recreation Park The estimated attendance was 1,200 May 1, 1983: A century later, the Phillies observed the 100th anniversary of their first game and 40-year-old 1B Tony Perez collected three hits and drove in five runs in an 11-3 romp over Houston RHP John Enzmann, 93, and the oldest living former Phillie at the time, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
