L O U I S I A N A T E C H U N I V E R S I T Y P a g e 11 LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT Policy Statement On Lightning & Severe Weather CHAIN OF COMMAND The responsibility for terminating an athletic activity in the event of lightning, severe weather, and/or storms lies with the Louisiana Tech University ( LA Tech ) certified athletic trainer (practices) or the LA Tech Game Administrator (games). A LA Tech certified athletic trainer will communicate with the LA Tech Game Administrator, the head coach and/or his/her designee, and game official(s) / umpire(s) of the potential for a lighting strike, severe weather, and/or storm, and will make the recommendation that all activities stop immediately. If the head coach is not present, an assistant coach will assume responsibility. If a coach and/or game official(s) / umpire(s) make the decision to continue to practice and/or continue with a game or other activity despite a National Weather Service Severe Weather Warning, the cancellation of classes, and/or the verbal instruction by a LA Tech certified athletic trainer or LA Tech Game Administrator, they will be doing so against the recommendations of the LA Tech Athletics Department, and will be personally liable for any and all injuries. MEANS OF MONITORING WEATHER Members of the LA Tech Athletics Department will use the following methods: 1. WeatherSentry Online Turf Edition (Pro) This service provides weather alerts for lightning, snow, ice, severe weather, precipitation timing and is capable of notifying users through SMS text messaging. Lightning strikes which occur within a 20 mile radius of the Charles Wyly Athletic Center (Football Fieldhouse) will result in a Lightning Advisory text message being sent to the cell phone(s) of authorized personnel. Lightning strikes which occur within a 10 mile radius of the Charles Wyly Athletic Center (Football Fieldhouse) will result in a Lighting Warning text message being sent to the cell phone(s) of authorized personnel. WeatherSentry gives the user the capability to monitor specific locations, which are set by authorized personnel using integrated GPS technology. This system allows authorized personnel the capability to monitor weather through the use of wireless devices and/or computer(s). The policy of the LA Tech Athletics Department will be as follows: a) A LA Tech certified athletic trainer will inform the visiting team s athletic trainer and/or coach and game official(s) / umpire(s) of LA Tech s policy with regards to lightning, severe weather, and/or storms during pre-game warm-ups. b) A LA Tech certified athletic trainer will watch for lightning and listen for thunder, and will be responsible for keeping track of the flash / bang count. c) A LA Tech certified athletic trainer will also monitor the WeatherSentry System, local weather radar and media outlets for severe thunderstorm, tornado, hurricane, and/or other severe weather watches / warnings.

L O U I S I A N A T E C H U N I V E R S I T Y P a g e 12 d) When the flash/bang count reaches 40 seconds, and/or when a LA Tech certified athletic trainer receives a SMS text Lightning Advisory indicating lightning has occurred within the 10-20 mile radius, and/or a severe weather watch has been issued, a LA Tech certified athletic trainer will notify the following persons: The game official / umpire (at a break in the action); The LA Tech head coach and/or his/her designee; The visiting team s athletic trainer and/or coach (if applicable); and LA Tech game administrator / operations staff (if applicable). e) When the flash/bang count reaches 30 seconds or less, and/or when a LA Tech certified athletic trainer receives a SMS text Lightning Warning indicating that lightning has occurred within a 10 mile radius, and/or a severe weather warning has been issued, a LA Tech certified athletic trainer will notify the following persons: The game official(s) / umpire(s); The LA Tech head coach and/or his/her designee; The visiting team s athletic trainer and/or coach (if applicable); and LA Tech game administrator / operations staff (if applicable). At this point, all game / practice activities are to cease IMMEDIATELY, and ALL personnel are to evacuate to a safe structure or location. CRITERIA FOR SAFE RETURN TO THE PRACTICE/GAME AREA a) Personnel should not return to the practice/game area until thirty (30) minutes have passed since the flash/bang count is greater than 30, the last lightning flash or the last sound of thunder and/or a LA Tech certified athletic trainer has received a SMS Lightning Warning Area All Clear text message indicating that lightning has not occurred within a 10 mile radius within the last 30 minutes. b) Each time the flash/bang count goes below 30, lightning is observed and/or thunder is heard, the 30-minute clock is to be reset. c) Blue skies in the local area and/or a lack of rainfall are not adequate reasons to breach the 30- minute return-to-play rule. Lightning can strike up to ten (10) miles away from the rainshaft of a storm.
