With SJU s next win, Phil Martelli will surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on SJU s list for coaching victories. Ramsay totaled 234 in 11 years (234-72 from 1955 to 66) while Martelli s 12-year mark is 234-133. Bill Ferguson (1928 to 1953) holds the SJU record with 309 victories. The Hawks are in the midst of a six-game stretch of games in Philadelphia. The only game not at the Fieldhouse or Palestra is the visit to Villanova on Feb. 6. Pat Calathes has made 21 consecutive free throws. His last miss came in the Rhode Island game, when he went an uncharacteristic 0-for-3. He s shooting 82.9 percent on the season. This is Saint Joseph s first appearance on national tv this season. Pat Calathes leads the Atlantic 10 in 3-point percentage in conference games only, hitting 62.1 percent (18- for-29). In the past three games, the junior is averaging 17.7 points, while shooting 58.3% from 3-point range and 47% from the field. Ahmad Nivins is averaging 19.1 points in conference games, while converting 61.4 percent of his field-goal attempts. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 12th season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in 2005-06, as the Hawks went from a 10-12 record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a 19-14 mark. Martelli s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003-04 when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the 03-04 squad that went 30-2, the 2004-05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24-12. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 12-year career record is now 234-133, but more impressively, his teams have gone 141-54 in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He is now tied with Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second on SJU s list for coaching victories with 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.638) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is 118-64 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In 2003-04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995-96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the 1976-77 season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, the St. Joseph s Prep graduate was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA To u rnament teams in both 1974-75 and 1975-76, serving as team co-captain as a s e n i o r. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph s. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: Pat Calathes scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ahmad Nivins had 19 points and eight rebounds as Saint Joseph's defeated Penn, 84-74, in a Big 5 contest at the sold-out Palestra. Rob Ferguson and Darrin Govens each had 15 points for SJU, which connected on 31 of 58 shots in the game (53.4 percent), led by Nivins, who hit 9-of-12 field goals. Penn held a 37-36 edge at the half, which saw nine lead changes with neither team gaining more than a five-point lead. Ferguson hit a 3-pointer three minutes into the second half to give the Hawks a 44-42 advantage, and they never trailed again. A layup by Nivins gave SJU a 58-49 lead with 10:20 to play, before Penn rallied to within 64-57 at the 7:23 mark. Nivins hit a layup to give the Hawks their biggest lead, 73-61, before the Quakers rallied to within 77-72 on a 3-pointer at the 1:50 mark, but another Nivins layup and two free throws by Calathes clinched the game for the Hawks. The victory was the 234th for Phil Martelli, tying him with Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second most wins by a Saint Joseph's coach. PAT S WEEK: Pat Calathes had a standout week, establishing a new careerhigh and then surpassing it in the next game. In two games he averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Calathes set a career-high with 21 points at GW, then bettered it with 23 points in win over Penn. The junior also grabbed 10 rebounds against Penn for his second double-double. On the week, he shot 65% (13-for-20) from the field, 62.5% (5-for-8) from 3-point range and 13-for-13 from the foul line, extending his free throw streak to 21 consecutive. Another key was that he had no turnovers and six assists against Penn. PHIL IT UP: Phil Martelli has tied Hall of Famer and SJU coaching legend Jack Ramsay for second place on the all-time victories list, reaching his 234th with the win over Penn. The next win will give Martelli sole possession of second place on the list behind Bill Ferguson, who amassed 309 victories as Hawks head coach from 1928 to 1953. Ramsay compiled a 234-72 record in 11 seasons. Martelli s stands at 234-133 in 12 years. TUR-NO-VERS: As Phil Martelli has said repeatedly, the Hawks can give themselves a chance if they limit the turnovers. The win over was a perfect example as SJU had only nine in the game. Even more impressively, the Hawks only had three turnovers in the second half, and were without any in the final 15 minutes of the game. That s a season-low, tying the effort against Duquesne. On the flip side, turnovers cost them the game at GW, as SJU committed 20 in the game, including four critical ones in the last six minutes. In conference games, the Hawks are averaging 12.8 per game - in their non-conference slate, SJU has 15.1 turnovers per game. COLD SPELL: After starting the game with a 15-2 run and hitting its first six shots, the Hawks held the lead at GW until the 3:42 mark. SJU went without a field goal in the final 6:56 and committed four crucial turnovers during that span, while allowing GW to go on an 18-3 run. 3-POINTS THE HARD WAY: In the seven conference games combined, Ahmad Nivins has converted a total of 12 3-point plays. The Hawks leading scorer is taking advantage of his free throw shooting, as he is hitting 79.4 percent from the line in league games. IMPROVED NUMBERS: With the focus of the offense resting on their shoulders, Ahmad Nivins, Pat Calathes and Rob Ferguson have upped their numbers. Rivera Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (Jan. 7) INJURY REPORT: Arvydas Lidzius suffered a fracture in the frontal bone over his left eye practice on Jan. 15 and is sidelined indefinitely and will have to wear a protective mask when returns. ALL-AROUND GUY: Pat Calathes is among the Hawks leaders in practically every category and now tops the team in 3-point percentage (46.3) and assists (3.45), while ranking second on the squad in scoring (13.8), rebounding (6.9). The 6-10 guard/forward has scored double figures in all but four games and has a current streak of nine in a row. He ranks among the conference s leaders in seven different categories. LONG RANGE THREATS: SJU seemed to be without that defined 3-point threat that they ve had over the past few years (such as Chet Stachitas and Pat Carroll), but Rob Ferguson and Pat Calathes are both close to filling those roles. Ferguson is currently hitting 47.8 percent from beyond the arc, with Calathes close behind at 47.3. Calathes has been on fire lately, converting an A-10 best 62.1 percent from the arc in conference games only. The team is shooting a league-best 40.4 percent on the year and made a season-high 10 3-pointers against both and Duquesne. ON BOARD: The Hawks have turned into a strong rebounding team, with a plus margin in 14 of 20 games. SJU has outrebounded its foes by double digits five times. Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes are the top Hawks on the boards with averages of 7.4 and 6.9, respectively. In the first half at GW, the Hawks held a decisive 21-8 margin. POINT TAKEN: Phil Martelli credits assistant coach and former NBA player Doug Overton with his work with the Hawks young guards, particularly with point guards Jawan Carter and Darrin Govens. Martelli was looking for more assertiveness from the point guards and Carter responded with a career-high 20 points in the win over. ON THE LINE: Despite being the top free throw shooting team in the nation in 05-06 (79.9), it has been one of the Hawks biggest inconsistencies this season. The percentage has improved in league play, with the Hawks now hitting 79.4 percent in conference games. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 MONTHLY REPORT: The month of January was a solid one for the Hawks in terms of the offense. In the eight games they averaged 76.4 points, shot 50.2 percent from the field, 46.6 percent from 3-point range and 78.1 percent from the foul line. DEPTH CHARGES: Lately, Phil Martelli s rotation has been just seven deep with Darrin Govens and D.J. Rivera seeing the only significant time off the bench. Arvydas Lidzius is the other player who would normally see more time, but he has been sidelined since January 15 with a fracture over his left eye. HOME COOKING: The Hawks are in the midst of a six-game stretch in which they do not leave the Philadelphia area. It started on Saturday at the Hawks home away from home, the Palestra. This stretch includes three games at the Fieldhouse, two at the Palestra and one just seven miles away at Villanova. SJU goes on the road again to St. Bonaventure on Feb. 17. MONEY IN THE BANK: Rob Ferguson and Pat Calathes are almost automatic at the free-throw line, with Ferguson converting 84 percent and Calathes hitting 82.9%. STRAIGHT SHOOTERS: The Hawks have surprised even their coach with their shooting percentages and scoring. After the win over Temple on Jan. 10, Phil Martelli said, The scoring has me absolutely flabbergasted. It s like overnight there s a confidence level. I don t know where it came from... They carry themselves differently... The shooting has been a surprise to me all year. SJU has scored 75-plus points in seven of the last eight games, averaging 76.4 points in the month of January. Before the Fordham game (1/17), the Hawks had put together four in a row scoring 75 or more points - the last time that happened was a six-game string in the middle of SJU s 27-0 regular season in 2003-04. ON FIRE: Phil Martelli is pleasantly surprised with the way the Hawks have been shooting the ball as of late, with the team hitting 54.3 percent from the field and 53.7 from 3-point range in the past three games. Martelli sees the shooting percentages as a direct correlation to the Hawks taking better care of the ball, limiting themselves to 11 turnovers per game. This is a decrease from the 16.6 per game they were averaging before the conference season began. TWO AGAINST FIVE: A rare occurence happened in the first half at Fordham as Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes accounted for all of the Hawks 21 points, with Nivins notching 12 and Calathes tallying nine. Jawan Carter became the first Hawk other than the duo to reach the scoring column when he hit a 3-pointer at 18:19 of the second half. One telling statistic for the first half was that third leading scorer Rob Ferguson did not have a shot, as he was saddled with three early fouls. PRIME TIME PLAYERS: The Hawks television appearances have been limited this year and the Saint Louis game is actually SJU s first on national tv (ESPN2). It starts a three-game span of exposure for the Hawks as the Dayton game on Sunday, Feb. 4 will be seen locally (Comcast SportsNet) and then the game at Villanova on Tuesday, Feb. 6 will be seen nationally on ESPN2 as part of the annual Rivalry Week. Last season the Hawks went 2-7 in nationally-televised games. D.J. S SPARK: D.J. Rivera has been able to often provide the Hawks with a spark off the bench and he did that again at Fordham. Rivera held the Rams leading scorer Marcus Stout to five points in the second half, although Stout broke free on a switch to get the winning layup. Offensively, Rivera scored all 10 of his points in the second half, including a 3-point play with 3:44 to go in regulation and then what looked to be the game-winning putback at :24. (on freshmen): They ve played 18 games. They re not freshmen anymore - they re college basketball players. (on Pat Calathes): I think that there s progress because he s getting minutes to play. I still think that there s a lot there and opportunities there for him to move his game even further. I give him credit because he s worked hard defensively. He s not afraid to take a shot and he made a big three against their zone (vs. ). (on Ahmad Nivins): We have a basket waiting to happen. I don t know what people are going to do with Ahmad Nivins. (on Garrett Williamson): Jameer (Nelson) called me this summer and said, Coach, you ve got a guy that I can t get by. I thought who could that possibly be. Jameer said it was Garrett. Garrett has a fire in his belly that really drives him. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That s what I think has to happen if we re to have success. The bottom line is - at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league.

2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 BLOCK IT OUT: The Hawks have three players among the A-10 s leaders in blocked shots - Ahmad Nivins (1.26), Rob Ferguson (1.20) and Pat Calathes (0.8). Nivins and Ferguson are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, while Calathes is 11th. KEEPING THE RESOLUTIONS: The Hawks got the New Year off to a solid start with a drastic change in the numbers from the non-conference games. At Temple, Jawan Carter, Garrett Williamson, D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens had collectively, one of their best games so far. Rivera and Govens provided a spark off the bench and combined for 15 points in the first as the Hawks came back from an early deficit. Williamson and Rivera shut down Temple s leading scorer Dionte Christmas, limiting him to nine points. Carter ran the offense and scored nine points while handing out four assists. Carter had a season-best game against, scoring 20 points while hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers. IRON MAN: Ahmad Nivins is among the A-10 s leaders in minutes played, averaging 34.3 per game to rank eighth. In the last five games, Nivins has averaged 36.8 minutes (that s including a full 45 in the OT game at Fordham). Impressively, the sophomore has stayed out of foul trouble, with just 17 fouls in those five contests. COMEBACK KIDS: The Hawks fought back from a double-digit deficit at Charlotte to pull out a 75-70 win. It was the largest deficit (13 pts in 1st half; 12 in 2nd) overcome for a win this season. CONFERENCE CALL: In conference games only, the Hawks have three players notching double figures - Ahmad Nivins (19.1 ppg), Pat Calathes (16.1), and Rob Ferguson (13.4). Nivins is shooting 61.4 percent from the field in A-10 contests. WHERE S THE D?: The Hawks defense deserted them against Rhode Island, as they gave up a season-high 86 points. It was the highest total produced against SJU since Gonzaga scored 102 on Dec. 31, 2005. Saint Joseph s allowed the Rams to shoot 53.7 percent, the best effort for an opponent since Ohio hit 60.4 percent on Dec. 10. Heading into the URI game, the Hawks led the A-10 with a scoring defense of 60.2. THE BIG THREE: The Hawks are getting balanced scoring and have had their three leading scorers- Ahmad Nivins, Rob Ferg u s o n and P a t Calathes - provide 61.6 percent of the offense. In fact, there have been 11 games this year in which all three have notched double figures, and the Hawks have won nine of those contests. NOTING NIVINS: Ahmad Nivins has been named the Big 5 Player of the Week twice this season (Jan. 15, Jan. 8) and has earned the Atlantic 10 honor once (Dec. 9). FERG S FINEST: SJU s coaches told Rob Ferguson he needs to be more aggressive on offense, and he responded with the kind of game against Duquesne that has been expected of him. The junior made seven of his first eight shots to score 17 points in the first half alone, en route to tying his career-high with 22 points. He s now averaging 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds, while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 84 percent from the foul line. GIVEN BY GOVENS: Freshman reserve Darrin Govens is one of the A-10 s leaders in assist/turnover ratio with 1.79 (fifth). Govens handed out a season-best seven assists against Duquesne and averages 3.1. At Charlotte, he had what Phil Martelli called his best college game, with a careerhigh 14 points and four assists in 29 minutes. Martelli said it wasn t the points that stood out, but the fact that he had the right pace of the game and had the guys running with him. LOSING THE LEAD: SJU lost a 10-point lead in both halves against Hofstra. The Hawks actually led by 11 points with 13 minutes to play. And then after holding a 57-50 lead with 9:27 to play, the Hawks went for seven minutes without a field goal, until Ahmad Nivins scored a 3-point play at 2:55. The remainder of the Hawks points came from the foul line, but a tie with 31 seconds left set the stage for the Hofstra game-winning shot. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Nivins currently leads the team with 17.2 ppg while Ferguson is scoring 12.4 ppg. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 118. His winning percentage in conference games (.645) is also the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of Rhode Island has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and URI. D.J. s DEFENSE: D.J. Rivera has given the Hawks a spark off the bench with his energy and defense. Phil Martelli refers to his fierceness on defense, and equates that to the qualities that Tyrone Barley, one of SJU s all-time top defenders, brought to the Hawks from 2000 to 2004. Rivera definitely gave the Hawks a boost at Temple, scoring seven first-half points, blocking three shots and helping limit TU s Dionte Christmas to just nine points. Rivera tops the Hawks in steals with 1.5 per game. TO THE POINT: Although Phil Martelli prefers to not label his guards by position, he does have five players capable of running the point, and has the flexibility of using a number of combinations in the backcourt. Jawan Carter is the primary point guard, but at times, Darrin Govens, Pat Calathes, Garrett Williamson and D.J. Rivera have filled that role. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Phil Martelli is giving plenty of minutes to his freshmen, and SJU has often had three or four of them on the court at the same time. Jawan Carter and Garrett Williamson comprise the starting backcourt, with D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens being among the first players off the bench. Carter ranks fourth on the team in minutes played with 25.4, with Williamson averaging 23.7, with Govens seeing 23.5 and Rivera at 23.4 minutes per game.

2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 7 THE FOUR FRESHMEN: In the Saint Mary s win, SJU had four freshmen on the court for one of the longest periods of the season thus far (approx. four minutes). The Hawks trailed 16-11 at the time, but Rockwell Moody, D.J. Rivera, Garrett Williamson, and Darrin Govens (replaced by Jawan Carter) teamed with upperclassman Rob Ferguson, and then Pat Calathes, to overtake the lead, 17-16. SJU used that momentum to outscore the Gaels, 7-2, at the end of the half and then go into halftime tied, 30-30. THE COMEBACK KID: Darrin Govens made an extremely quick return to action playing in the Boston University game, just 10 days after having surgery on his fractured right hand (fourth metacarpal). Govens, who had surgery on Nov. 17, asked to participate in practice on Nov. 26, and then was cleared by the doctor just hours before the BU game. STRONG FINISH: After a 4-7 start in conference play last year, Saint Joseph s finished strong, putting together a five-game winning streak heading into the A-10 Tournament, and finishing with a 9-7 mark. The Hawks then went on to win three straight in the conference tournament, before losing to by a point in the championship game. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in 2000-01. Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester, PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli is putting one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A Pennsylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In 2005-06, SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph s and will enroll in the University in the fall of 2007. Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in 2006. He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for 2007. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Hawks are 6-1 in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse this season and are 59-9 (86.7 winning pct.) over the past seven years. During the course of 58 seasons in the Fieldhouse (counting this one), the Hawks have won 80 percent on the home court, with the overall re c o rd now at 311-77. THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 424 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the 1993-94 season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, 1993. HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a 141-54 record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph- Macon College. FAB FROSH: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the Pennsylvania All-State 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic careers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Tatnall School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera s Neumann-Goretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. NEW FACES: Phil Mart e l l i has two new faces on the bench with first-year assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overt o n. Duda served as the head coach at M a rt e l l i s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a 143-68 re c o rd with two conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at La Salle and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. 2006-07 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 8 IF YOU BUILD IT...: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at SJU. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 17,700-sq. ft. center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for the basketball teams. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student recreation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. A permanent practice area for men's and women's basketball will also be added to the Rec Center during phase two. Phase three is the expansion of the Fieldhouse to include a full-service concourse around the perimeter of the arena and an increase in capacity by at least 1,000 seats. It is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. THE HAW K The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06. One of the most famous mascots in college s p o rts, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 season. B rennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for thre e years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69-56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semest e r, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA.

SJU 63- Fairfield 47: The Hawks won their season opener for the second year in a row, defeating Fairfield, 63-47 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Ahmad Nivins scored a career-high 20 points, with 15 of them in the second half as the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead through the final 20 minutes. Rob Ferguson added 14 points as the Hawks put their new inside game into play. Pat Calathes scored 13 and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, as the Hawks shot 58.8 percent in the second half alone. The game was turnover-ridden as SJU committed 22 while Fairfield had 16. SJU led by as many as 18 points late in the game. SJU 81- Lafayette 73: Solid shooting and a balanced scoring attack helped the Hawks to an 81-73 win over Lafayette to improve to 2-0. SJU went 27- of-49 from the floor (55.1 percent) and had five players in double figures. Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins led the way for the Hawks, scoring 19 points apiece with freshman Jawan Carter hitting for a personal best 18. After a back-and-forth opening 14 minutes of play, the Hawks began to pull away. Leading 26-24, the Hawks went on an 18-6 run over the next five minutes, capped by a pair of free throws by Carter. SJU would enter halftime up 44-32 despite the Leopards hitting 62 percent of their shots. In the second half, Saint Joseph's quickly opened an 18-point lead, and held the same advantage, 60-42, at the 11:11 mark. The Hawks committed 16 turnovers in the second half and allowed Lafayette to fight back to within five, 78-73, at :28. But SJU hung on as Pat Calathes converted three free throws to seal the win, as he finished with 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds. SJU 63- Bucknell 53: SJU put together an impressive 63-53 win over Bucknell, to end a two-game losing streak against the Bison. The Hawks trailed in the early going, 18-12, nine minutes into the game, but then turned up the intensity on defense, forcing three straight Bison turnovers and tying the game, 21-21, with 5:49 to play. Pat Calathes then hit a 3- pointer to give the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. That started a 13-1 Hawk run, which included seven points from Nivins, that gave SJU a 34-22 lead with under two minutes left in the half. After a Bison basket, Jawan Carter hit a 3-pointer from the deep left corner to give the Hawks a 37-24 advantage at the half. Ahmad Nivins had 15 points and nine rebounds, Calathes scored 14 and Rob Ferguson had 11 points. Penn State 65- SJU 61: Penn State erased an eight-point SJU lead with a minute to play to earn the 65-61 win, giving the Hawks their first loss of the season. A 3-pointer banked in by PSU s Danny Morrissey with 25 seconds to play was the gamewinner. Trailing 62-61, Saint Joseph's last chance came when Ahmad Nivins' shot was blocked by Geary Claxton at :02. Phil Martelli was assessed a technical foul after the play and PSU made three free throws to provide the final margin. SJU had led since the 14:27 mark of the second half, and with 5:07 to play, had a 56-46 advantage. A layup by Rob Ferguson put the Hawks ahead, 60-52, with 1:20 to play, but PSU would go on to score the next seven points, Ahmad Nivins made one of two free throws before Morrissey hit the game winner at :25.SJU made 11 consecutive free throws before its first miss, and 14 of its first 15, but went cold down the stretch, missing three foul shots, including two on the front ends of one-and-one opportunities. PSU led at halftime, 31-28, as it shot 50 percent from the field. SJU came out strong in the second half, running off the first six points, while shooting 48.5 percent in that half. SJU 55- Boston Univ. 39: SJU s defense keyed the 55-39 win over Boston University at the Fieldhouse. After a sloppy first half, in which the teams combined for 30 turnovers, the Hawks used their defense to take control in the second half. Darrin Govens made his return from a fracture in his hand (and surgery on Nov. 17) to score 11 points, including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc. Drexel 72- SJU 56: SJU couldn t recover from an early 21-2 run by Drexel, to fall to the Dragons, 72-56, at the Palestra in the first city game for the Hawks. Drexel took a 25-9 lead with seven minutes to play in the half as SJU needed 13 first-half points from Pat Calathes to keep it close. Drexel finished a 14-3 run with 10 minutes to play to give it a 54-34 lead. DU s defense recorded 13 blocks and held Hawks leading scorer Ahmad Nivins to just one point. Calathes had a career-high 19 points and was the only Hawk in double figures. SJU 75- Bellarmine 63: Ahmad Nivins scored a career-high 28 points and freshman D.J. Rivera had a career-high 19 off the bench to lead Saint Joseph's to a 75-63 win over Bellarmine in the NABC Classic at Louisville. SJU led from the start but Bellarmine trimmed a 23-15 Hawk lead to 23-21 with 5:36 remaining. The Hawks then put together a 13-4 run, with five consecutive points from Rivera to build the lead back up to 36-25 with 1:28 left in the half. Nivins finished the half with 15 points as the Hawks made 16 of 29 shots (55.2%) from the field. Bellarmine opened the second half with a 9-1 run to close within 41-39. A layup from Alvin Mofunanya, plus a 3-point play by Rivera and another 3-point play by Nivins quickly built SJU's lead back to 50-39 at 13:41.The Knights would not fold and closed to 60-57 with 5:40 remaining. Free throws by the Hawks increased the lead to five, but two foul shots pulled the Knights within three one more time. Then Nivins was fouled as he grabbed one of his six offensive rebounds and converted both shots to give the Hawks a 64-59 edge. Darrin Govens picked up a steal and went coast-to-coast for the layup, followed by another dunk from Nivins at 3:43 SJU's defense forced Bellarmine into 22 turnovers while recording a season-high 16 steals. Louisville 74- SJU 64: Louisville led for all but the first two minutes and held a double digit lead for most of the game as the Cardinals defeated Saint Joseph s, 74-64, in the NABC Classic. Ahmad Nivins led the Hawks with 26 points and eight rebounds while Pat Calathes added 19 points and nine boards The Cardinals led by as much as 15, but allowed the Hawks to pull within 49-44 midway through the second half. The host team went on a 14-5 run, capping it with a 3-pointer to put Louisville up 63-49. Ohio 79- SJU 72: Ohio shot 65 percent in the second half to put away Saint Joseph's, 79-72, in the final game of the NABC Classic for both teams at Louisville's Freedom Hall on Dec 10. Ohio led the entire game, but the Hawks closed a 12-point deficit to 54-53 with 8:14 to play, helped by two 3-pointers from Jawan Carter. Then trailing by only 56-55 at 7:35, the Hawks committed three consecutive turnovers that allowed the Bobcats to build their lead back to 61-55. Rob Ferguson hit a 3-pointer to again close within 61-58 at 5:07, but Ohio guard Bubba Walther put away the Hawks with back-to-back 3-pointers, including one that was at least six feet behind the arc, giving OU a 67-60 lead with under four minutes to play. With the Hawks pressing, D.J. Rivera stole the ball in the backcourt and Garrett Williamson converted the layup and the ensuing free throw to cut the SJU deficit to 73-68 at :50. But with the Hawks forced to foul, Ohio made 6-of- 6 from the line in the final 30 seconds to ice the game.

SJU 55- Saint Mary s 51: Rob Ferguson scored 15 points and D.J. Rivera hit two crucial free throws in the last 11 seconds as Saint Joseph's defeated Saint Mary's, 55-51 at home. Pat Calathes and Jawan Carter each had 13 points for SJU, playing without leading scorer Ahmad Nivins, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. The Hawks started the second half with 11 unanswered points to take a 41-30 lead and led 45-36 with 11:37 left to play. SMC then went on a 13-4 spurt, and the Gaels tied the score 49-49 on a layup at the 5:11 mark. SJU moved ahead 53-49 before a Gaels layup by narrowed the gap to 53-51 with 2:07 remaining. Neither team scored again, as Garrett Williamson had a key block at :04, and Rivera's two free throws accounted for the final score. Hofstra 65- SJU 63: SJU was the victim of a last-second shot and fell to Hofstra by two points, 65-63, for the second year in a row. Loren Stokes jumper with 2.2 seconds left was the gamewinner, as the Hawks squandered 10-point leads in both halves. Hofstra trailed 48-37 with 13:17 to play but went on an 8-0 run. The Hawks still led 57-50 with 9:21 left, but they managed just one field goal the rest of the way, suddenly struggling against Hofstra's 2-3 zone defense. Jawan Carter made the second of two free throws, the first rattled in and out, with 31 seconds left to tie the game at 63. Hofstra called a timeout with 23 seconds left and ran the clock down for Stokes' game-winner. Ahmad Nivins had 14 points in his first game back after missing one contest with an ankle injury. SJU 58- Boston Univ. 53: Ahmad Nivins had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead SJU over Boston University, 58-53, in the third-place game of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. The Hawks beat BU for the second time this season. The Terriers pulled within 35-32 with 13:25 to play, but the Hawks went on an 11-0 run and the Terriers didn't make a field goal for seven minutes, although they did get as close as five points twice. Rob Ferguson added 13 points for the Hawks, who committed 17 turnovers, but finished with a 42-27 rebounding advantage and blocked seven shots. Nivins was named to the All-Tournament team. SJU 89- Duquesne 41: Rob Ferguson scored 17 of his career-high 22 points in the first half as Saint Joseph s dominated Duquesne, 89-41, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. Ferguson made seven of his first eight shots from the field as the Hawks stormed out to a 21-6 lead in the first 10 minutes. The junior tied his career-high in both points (22) and rebounds (8). Ahmad Nivins had 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting while freshman D.J. Rivera notched 14 points off the bench. Pat Calathes had 12 points, eight rebounds and tied his career-high with seven assists. Leading 8-6 in the early going, Saint Joseph's took advantage of 16 consecutive missed field goals by Duquesne, as the visitors did not score another basket until the 6:48 mark of the half. By that time, the Hawks owned a 23-9 lead, en route to a 41-12 halftime margin. The game was more of the same in the second half as Saint Joseph's went on a 16-6 run in the first five minutes, while shooting 61.3 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. It was SJU s largest margin of victory since Jan. 24, 2004, when it won at St. Bonaventure, 114-63. SJU 75- Charlotte 70: Ahmad Nivins scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half as Saint Joseph's rallied to beat Charlotte, 75-70. Pat Calathes and Darrin Govens (career-high) added 14 points apiece. Saint Joseph's trailed by 13 in the first half and 11 early in the second before Nivins went to work inside. He scored seven points in an 11-2 run that gave the Hawks their first lead with 5:47 left. Nivins' two free throws with 3 minutes left made it 66-63 and Rivera's layup with just over 2 minutes left gave the Hawks a 70-65 lead. The Hawks rallied, going on a 19-4 run and taking their first lead at 20-19 on Garrett Williamson's layup with 8:25 remaining. Darrin Govens scored eight straight points and helped Saint Joseph's to its largest lead of the half, 38-29, and the Hawks went into the lockerroom with a 40-33 lead. Govens and D.J. Rivera combined for 15 points off the bench in the half as the Hawks shot 62.5 percent from the field. SJU used a 10-2 run at the start of the second half to take its biggest lead, 50-35. Temple made a 15-6 run to pull within 56-50 with 11:14 to play. Williamson scored a three-point play and Ferguson hit a layup to give Saint Joseph's a 61-50 edge at 9:51. Nivins added six points in a span of five minutes to push the Hawks' lead to 73-61 with over four minutes to play. Rhode Island 86- SJU 81: Saint Joseph s fell short in its rally to overcome Rhode Island, 86-81, to end its four-game winning streak. The Hawks dug a hole early, trailing 46-31 at halftime and then by as much as 18 in the second half. SJU rallied, led by 17 second-half points from Ahmad Nivins, to come within single digits by the 5-minute mark. An offensive rebound and tip-in by Arvydas Lidzius pulled the Hawks to 81-77 at 1:08 and then with :50 to play, Pat Calathes scored on a layup to close the gap to 83-81. A potential tying jumper by Darrin Govens at :17 was off the mark and URI ran out the clock while hitting three of four free throws. The loss ruined high-scoring efforts by Nivins, who tied his career-highs with 28 points and 11 rebounds and a personal best 20 points and 11 rebounds from Calathes. Govens also set a new career-high with 17 points, as he scored 12 in the final 7:41 to aid the SJU rally. Fordham 56- SJU 55: The Hawks lost a defensive struggle to Fordham, 56-55, in overtime, as Marcus Stout hit a layup with four seconds to go to snap the Hawks 12-game winning streak vs. the Rams. The Hawks fell behind early, and scored just 21 points in the first half, with Ahmad Nivins (12) and Pat Calathes (9) accounting for all of them. SJU trailed by as much as eight with five minutes to go, but went on a 7-0 run to pull within 49-48 at 2:09. With the score tied at 50-50, Rob Ferguson s potential game-winning jumper missed at :03. The teams went into overtime and D.J. Rivera rebounded a miss by Ferguson to give the Hawks a 55-54 lead. The lead was short-lived as Fordham went back down the court and Stout scored the winning basket at :04. SJU s last chance never came about as the inbounds pass was broken up. Nivins finished with 22 points, Calathes had 13 points and nine rebounds and Rivera scored 10 points. SJU 82-74: SJU battled back and held onto a late lead to defeat, 82-74 in the first meeting for the teams since the 2006 A-10 title game. Jawan Carter had a career-high 20 points while Pat Calathes (19 pts), Rob Ferguson (16 pts) and Ahmad Nivins (16 pts) all contributed. In a close first half, s lead peaked at five, 39-34, before the Hawks cut the deficit to two, 40-38 going into the break. The teams battled back and forth early with neither side leading by more than four. With the score tied at 57, 3-pointers by Calathes and Carter gave the Hawks a 63-57 lead, one they would not relinquish,with 9:23 to go. The lead would swell to 10 on a pair of Ferguson free throws with just under eight minutes to go. The Musketeers came to within three on two occasions but the Hawks were able to fend off the charge to secure the victory. closed within 73-70 with 3:46 left, but the Hawks responded with 7-2 run for an 80-72 advantage with 1:46 remaining. SJU tied its season low with nine turnovers, while shooting 59.1% in the second half.

GW 74- SJU 65: Despite a strong start and a lead it held most of the game, Saint Joseph s went cold from the field and committed key turnovers in the final minutes as George Washington rallied to win, 74-65. GW went on an 18-3 run in the final 6:56 while the Hawks were without a field goal during that span and committed four of their 20 turnovers. The second half was close all the way through, with the teams tied seven times. On six of those occasions when GW would tie the game, SJU would answer back with a big bucket by Pat Calathes, Rob Ferguson or Ahmad Nivins. After the seventh tie at 62-62, the Colonials took their first lead of the game on a layup at 3:20. GW went ahead, 68-63, and Calathes hit two free throws to pull the Hawks within 68-65 at 1:23, but a putback gave GW a 70-65 lead at :52. Calathes, who made six consecutive shots, finished with a career-high 21 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Ferguson added 14 and Nivins scored 12, with 10 in the second half. SJU 84- Penn 74: Pat Calathes scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ahmad Nivins had 19 points and eight rebounds as Saint Joseph's defeated Penn, 84-74, in a Big 5 contest at the sold-out Palestra. Rob Ferguson and Darrin Govens each had 15 points for SJU, which connected on 31 of 58 shots in the game (53.4 percent), led by Nivins, who hit 9-of-12 field goals. Penn held a 37-36 edge at the half, which saw nine lead changes with neither team gaining more than a fivepoint lead. Ferguson hit a 3-pointer three minutes into the second half to give the Hawks a 44-42 advantage, and they never trailed again. A layup by Nivins gave SJU a 58-49 lead with 10:20 to play, before Penn rallied to within 64-57 at the 7:23 mark. Nivins hit a layup to give the Hawks their biggest lead, 73-61, before the Quakers rallied to within 77-72 on a 3-pointer by Grandieri at the 1:50 mark, but another Nivins layup and two free throws by Calathes clinched the game for the Hawks.
