Prior to this season, the Grizzlies had gone 14-24 (.368) during the month of April since coming to Memphis prior to the 2001-02 season (Grizz 30-75,.286, in April while in Vancouver). Memphis closed the 2005-06 regular season with five consecutive victories. PLAYOFFS FAMILIAR TERRITORY FOR FRATELLO: Grizzlies Head Coach Mike Fratello is no stranger to the postseason. Fratello took over the Grizzlies last season on Dec. 2/04, bringing along 13 years of coaching experience, a 572-465 (.552) overall NBA record, as well as wealth of playoff basketball experience. Including last season s Grizzly playoff squad, Fratello-led teams have qualified for the NBA playoffs in 10 of his 14 seasons as a head coach (all-time playoff record of 20-38,.345). Consequently, the upcoming 2006 NBA Playoffs will represent Fratello s 11 th postseason run. Among active NBA head coaches, Fratello ranks seventh heading into the 2006 postseason in terms of number of seasons qualifying for the playoffs, as shown by the breakdown below: # OF PLAYOFF COACH SEASONS* 1. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES GASOL HAS CAREER NIGHT: Pau Gasol scored a career-high and single-game franchise-record 44 points vs. Seattle on Mar. 28, shooting 17-28 from the field and 10-12 from free throw line. Gasol s 44 topped his previous career-high of 39 points and was three points better than the previous franchise record of 41 points (Mike Miller, Bryant Reeves). Gasol has topped the 30-point plateau in three consecutive games from Mar. 24-28, scoring 113 points in that span and setting franchise-record for scoring over three consecutive games. The old record was set by Bryant Reeves, who totaled 101 points in a three-game span from Mar. 23-27/98. GASOL HAS STELLAR NIGHT IN THE BIG APPLE; BECOMES FRANCHISE REBOUND LEADER: Pau Gasol had another stellar night in a win at New York on Mar. 24, finishing with a game-high 36 points on 14-24 shooting, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks in 41 minutes. His eight rebounds gave him 3,072 for his career at the time, surpassing former Grizzly Shareef Abdur-Rahim (3,070) as the all-time franchise leader in rebounds. The bearded big man also stepped out beyond the arc and knocked down his third three-point field goal of the season and 10 th of his career. MILLER HAS CAREER-NIGHT: Mike Miller scored a career-high 41 points on 15-24 shooting, including a 5-12 performance from three-point range on Mar. 17 vs. Denver, also at the time, tying the franchise mark for points in a single game (Bryant Reeves, @ BOS on Jan. 15/98). Miller s 41 points established a new franchise record for most points scored by a Grizzly off the bench. It also marked the third-highest total by a non-starter over the last 10 years. GASOL POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Pau Gasol had one of the best all-around games of his career at Seattle on Mar. 8, finishing with a game-high 21 points, 12 rebounds and a game and career-high 12 assists recording the first triple-double of his career. Gasol s triple-double was just the fifth in franchise history, and second since the team s relocation to Memphis (see Miller in 3-D below). *Gasol is the only player in the NBA to post a triple-double consisting of at least 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists this season. Gasol also had a career-high four steals and three blocks in 41 minutes. GRIZZLIES ALL-STAR ACTION: Pau Gasol appeared in his first All-Star game, finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds, including a game-high six on the offensive end (tied with Tim Duncan) in 14 minutes of action. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, prior to this year s game, only one player had even half that many total rebounds in an NBA All-Star Game in which he failed to score (Darrell Imhoff had seven boards in the 1967 All-Star Game; Ben Wallace also had eight rebounds without scoring on Sunday night). His 12 rebounds is also the most in an All-Star game since Tim Duncan pulled down 13 caroms in the 2004 All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Gasol represents the Grizzlies first All-Star in franchise history and the first Spanish player in NBA history to be selected to the All-Star team. Grizzlies rookie Hakim Warrick also participated in this year s All-Star festivities, placing third in the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk competition Saturday night. Warrick was the first Memphis Grizzlies player to compete in the contest, and second player in franchise history to participate in the event (Stromile Swift, 2001 Slam Dunk competition). MILLER IN 3-D; GRIZZ STAR RESERVE POSTS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Mike Miller recorded his first career triple-double in a win over Sacramento on Jan. 10, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 41 minutes off the bench. Miller s efforts marked the fourth triple-double in franchise history, and first since the team s relocation to Memphis ending the Grizzlies' streak of 452 games without a player recording a triple-double (since Mike Bibby had one on Apr. 2/00). At the time, it was the second-longest current drought in the league. Utah (at the time) had the longest active streak, but snapped their drought as well at 530 straight games when Andrei Kirilenko recorded his first career triple-double on Jan. 17 (first since Karl Malone posted one on May 4/99). Miller is just the third NBA player in the last 10 years to record a triple-double in a game that he did not start. Shawn Bradley did it for Dallas on Apr. 7/98 as did Magic Johnson for the Lakers on Feb. 14/96. 2005-06 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS: - The Grizzlies win on Nov. 19 @ Utah gave Mike Fratello his 47 th victory with Memphis, surpassing Sidney Lowe as the franchise s second-winningest coach in history. - The Grizzlies opened the season by going 10-5 in November, their best opening month in franchise history. TICKETS FOR KIDS The Memphis Grizzlies' Tickets for Kids program facilitates the distribution of tickets purchased by Grizzlies season ticket holders, corporate sponsors, players, coaches, and owners to charities and youth organizations throughout the Mid-South. The program aims to provide children who would not otherwise have the resources the opportunity to attend a Grizzlies home basketball game. While doing so, the Grizzlies aim to recognize hard work and achievement in the classroom.
