9- BOSTON UNIVERSITY MEN S ICE HOCKEY TERRIERS AND THE OLYMPICS TE R R I E RS AT THE OLYMPIC GAM ES When hockey fans think of the Olympic Games and Boston University s involvement, their thoughts automatically turn to 9 and Lake Placid, N.Y., where four former Terriers served as catalysts for the U.S. team that won the gold medal. The memory of Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O Callahan and Dave Silk embracing each other after the gold medal game will forever be engraved in our memories. However, Terriers have been involved in Olympic hockey competition dating back to 9. While Jesse Owens was drawing international attention on the track, two former Terriers were winning a bronze medal in hockey. Below is a list of former Terriers who were involved in Olympic competition, including those who participated for the Canadian, Japanese, Dutch and Italian Olympic Teams. Five former Boston University hockey players have earned one of the highest honors an athlete can receive an Olympic gold medal. The first Terrier who was on a U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning hockey team was Dick Rodenhiser. Rodenhiser, who won a silver medal in Cortina, Italy, in 9, came back to win the gold in Squaw Valley, Calif., in 9. Twenty years later, in 9, in the Miracle on Ice, Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O Callahan and Dave Silk were on the U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold in Lake Placid, N.Y. Pictured right: With the United States flag as a backdrop, medals from the U.S. two gold medal-winning teams. Eruzione s gold medal is on top, while Rodenhiser s medal is below. Seventy-one of those were Terriers at the time they were drafted. The Terriers have had the third-largest number of draftees of any school, trailing only Minnesota and Michigan. The number drafted is the most of any Hockey East school. Nine Terriers have been drafted in the fi rst round. Included in this list is Rick DiPietro, who played for the Terriers during the 999- season. In the draft, DiPietro became the fi rst goalie ever selected as the number one overall pick when the made him their top choice. In the 9 Entry Draft, 9 HCA National Rookie of the Year Kieran Millan was picked th overall by the Colorado Avalanche, and two incoming freshman forwards, Alex Chiasson (Dallas Stars) and Wade Megan (Florida Panthers) were selected in the second and fi fth rounds, respectively.
