Race Weekend Instructions Thank You for registering for the Surfer s Path Marathon, Capitola Half Marathon or Capitola Half Marathon Relay. We re excited to bring you this event that showcases the Santa Cruz County coast. Following is helpful race weekend information: SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2017 PACKET PICK-UP & BEACH FRONT EXPO LOCATION: Capitola Village Beach Bandstand: 110 Monterey Ave, Capitola 95010. HOURS: 9:00AM - 5:00PM You must pick up your bib, timing chip and event shirt at the Capitola Village Beach Front Expo. There is no race day pick-up. Registrants that chose bib mailing will pick up their event shirt on race day near the finish line. DIRECTIONS TO PACKET PICK-UP & THE CAPITOLA VILLAGE BEACH FRONT EXPO (110 Monterey Ave, Capitola 95010): From Highway 1 Exit Bay Ave / Porter Street, exit #437 Turn onto Bay Ave toward Capitola Beach Continue on Bay Ave for approximately.5 miles Turn right at the Park Ave intersection before the railroad tracks into the Village & Beach Parking Lot Walk out of the parking area where you entered and proceed down the hill to the beach and bandstand. PARKING IN CAPITOLA VILLAGE Capitola Village and its beach can be very popular. Parking is sometimes challenging. There are three parking options. We recommend the first (directions above), which is the Village & Beach Parking lot. This lot offers all day parking and is a short walk down to the beach and packet pick up.
1. Village & Beach Parking lot is located on Bay Ave. at the top of the hill before entering Capitola Village. Look for the Village & Beach Parking sign just before the railroad tracks and opposite Park Ave. The cost of meters in this lot is $0.50 an hour with no time limit (the meters run from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.). 2. Village meter parking. There is street parking located throughout the Village. There is a three hour time limit for Village parking meters, whether you keep paying the meter or not. Capitola Village parking is strictly enforced. The cost is $1.50 per hour. 3. All day parking lot. There is an all day parking option located on Monterey Ave next to Britannia Arms at 110 Monterey Ave. This lot is conveniently located next to the beach and expo. The cost is $20 all day. SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2017 SURFER S PATH MARATHON, CAPITOLA HALF MARATHON & RELAY START LINE: On Beach St. and the corner of Cliff St. across from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Arcade located at 400 Beach St, Santa Cruz, CA 95060. START TIME: 7:00am sharp! The marathon, half marathon and half marathon relay start together. DIRECTIONS TO THE START LINE (Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay Leg #1) From Highway 1 or Highway 17 Exit at Ocean Street heading south Right on San Lorenzo Blvd. Left on Riverside Ave. Right on 2nd Street Enter Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk parking on left Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk parking is $15 all day ADDITIONAL PARKING Depot Park: 119 Center Street Santa Cruz Metered parking in surrounding area. Additional parking in surrounding area. Be sure to read parking signs posted in all areas since there are restrictions every day of the week. SWEAT CHECK There will be a sweat check area, hosted by Kennolyn Camps, near the start line on Beach St. Checked bags will be available near the finish line.
COURSE MANAGEMENT The course is managed at a 6 hour time limit. Runners must maintain a 13:45 minute per mile pace as the course is picked up on a mile by mile rolling basis. If you are unable to run within the allotted time, you will be asked to move onto the sidewalk. Once you are on the sidewalk, you must follow all traffic laws deemed by the City of Santa Cruz, County of Santa Cruz and City of Capitola. The course will be reopened to traffic. FINISH LINE The Finish Line for both events is located at Cowell s Beach at 109 Beach St. Santa Cruz 95060, adjacent to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf entrance and a short walk from the Start Line and all suggested race day parking areas.
MEDALS & AWARDS Each finisher will receive a commemorative finisher s medal at the Finish Line. The timing company will post unofficial results near the finish line. Awards will be provided to the top three male and female finishers in the following age groups: 19 and Under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ Half Marathon & Relay Awards will be distributed at approximately 10:00am in the finish area. Marathon Awards will be distributed at approximately 12:00pm in the finish area. SPECTATORS Completing a marathon or half marathon is an awesome achievement. We encourage you to cheer on your friends or family and help them make it to the finish. Here are our suggestions: 1. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk start. The marathon, half marathon and half marathon relay events begin together at 7:00 am sharp! Arrive early and watch the athletes stage. The runners will return to Cowell s Beach (a short walk down the street) after the first thirteen miles. 2. Capitola turn around and relay transition. The first course turn-around occurs through Capitola Village. Park above the village and walk down to check out the action. 3. Half Marathon finish / Marathoners half way. The finish line is located at Cowell s Beach, a short walk from the start area and next to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Catch the action as the Half Marathon and Relay runners finish and the Marathon runners continue onto the second half of their course. 4. Wilder Ranch State Park turn-around. Marathon runners will make their final turn-around on the bluff trail in Wilder. The Wilder parking lot is located near miles eighteen and twenty. 5. Cowell s Beach Marathon finish. Marathoners will return to Cowell s Beach for their finish. Take in all of the drama as runners achieve their goal! There will be plenty of post race festivities for all to enjoy.
CAPITOLA HALF MARATHON RELAY PARTICIPANTS RELAY TRANSPORTATION Participants will be responsible for their own transportation for the relay. The first leg runner will start on Beach St at Cliff St with the Marathon and Half Marathon. The second runner leg will start at the Relay Transition Zone located at the first course turnaround in Capitola Village. SUGGESTED RELAY TRANSPORTATION (make it a true team experience!): Drive together in one car to the race start in Santa Cruz near the Beach Boardwalk. Drop off runner 1 at the start. Runner 2 proceeds to Capitola Village, parks and walks to the transition area near the beach. Runner 1 finishes the first leg to Capitola Village and transitions to runner 2 who begins the second leg back to Santa Cruz. Runner 1 picks up the parked car in Capitola Village and drives back to the finish area near the Beach Boardwalk. Runners can each carry a key to the car, or the keys can be checked with race staff near the transition area in Capitola Village. RELAY EXCHANGE Each relay team will be issued a slap bracelet at packet pick-up. The slap bracelet is the relay baton. Runner #1 wears the slap bracelet and transfers it to runner #2 at the transition area. RELAY TIMING SPLITS There will be two times provided to each relay team. Runner #1 will receive their elapsed time from the start line, combined with the transition time. Runner #2 will receive the time from the transition exit to the finish. RELAY MEDALS & AWARDS Each half marathon relay finisher will receive a commemorative finisher s medal. Awards will be provided to the top teams in the following divisions: Male: For teams comprised of two males. Female: For teams comprised of two females.
