BOSTON RED SOX (5-7) at NEW YORK YANKEES (6-6) Sunday, April 13, 2014 8:05 p.m. ET Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY LHP Felix Doubront (1-1, 9.00) vs. Ivan Nova (1-1, 8.68) Game #13 Road Game #7 TV: ESPN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) STATE OF THE SOX: The Red Sox fell to the Yankees 7-4 yesterday and trail their 4-game series in the Bronx, 1-2, entering tonight s series finale. Boston has taken 2 of its last 4 games and 3 of its last 5...The Sox have alternated losses and wins for each of their last 7 games beginning on 4/6, going 3-4 in those contests. The Red Sox are in 5th place in the AL East, 2.0 games behind the division-leading Rays (7-5). YESTERDAY IN NEW YORK: Yesterday the Red Sox fell to the Yankees 7-4 in New York...It was Boston s 2nd straight game scoring exactly 4 runs on 7 hits. Starter John Lackey allowed 6 runs on a career-high 4 home runs, but struck out 6 without allowing a walk. A.J. Pierzynski had 2 hits, including a game-tying 2-run homer in the 2nd inning...he has multiple hits in 3 of his last 4 games (.563, 9-for-16). ON THE ROAD: Boston continues its 1st multi-series road trip of the season tonight with the last of 4 games at Yankee Stadium (1-2 thus far)...after Monday s offday, the Sox finish out the 8-day, 7-game trek with 3 contests in Chicago against the White Sox. Thus far this season, the Red Sox are 3-3 on the road compared to 2-4 at home. In 2013, the Red Sox went 44-37 (.543) on the road, 1 win shy of the Rangers and Dodgers for the best road record in MLB (both 45-36). BUNCHED UP: The Red Sox are within 2 wins of the AL lead, shared by OAK and TB (7)...6 AL teams have each won 6 games, and the Red Sox are 1 of 6 AL teams with 5 wins on the year...the only AL tean with as few as 4 wins is KC. GOING YARD: Of Boston s last 12 runs scored, 10 have come via home runs...the Sox had a streak of 10 straight runs scoring on homers beginning in the 8th inning of Wednesday s 4-2 comeback victory over the Rangers. Of Boston s 44 runs scored overall this season, 19 have come on home runs (43.2%). KNOCKS ENOUGH: The Red Sox connected for 7 hits yesterday and rank 3rd in the AL with 104 hits on the season, trailing only the White Sox (121) and Yankes (111). SCORING STORY: Despite placing 3rd in the American League in hits, Boston s average of 3.7 runs scored per game ranks 11th in the AL. The Sox are 6th in the AL with a.254 AVG but have hit just.190 (19-for-100) with runners in scoring position, 12th in the AL. The Red Sox have grounded into 17 double plays this season, the most in MLB and most for the Sox this early in a season since the 1985 team had 17 in the team s 1st 12 games...col ranks 2nd in MLB with 13 GIDP and next-highest in the AL is CLE at 12. TAKING THE BALL: Red Sox starters have allowed 2 ER or less while throwing 6.0 IP or more in an AL-leading 8 of the team s 12 games thus far...the only other ML team that has received as many such starts this season is the Braves (also 8)...Jon Lester is tied for the ML lead with 3 such efforts. NOTHING FOR FREE: Boston hurlers have allowed 2 walks or fewer in an ML-leading 9 games thus far this season...no other team has more than 7 such efforts. Sox pitchers have the best walks per 9.0 innings ratio in the AL at 2.0, 2nd in MLB to the Giants (1.9)... Overall, Boston has allowed the 2nd-fewest walks in the AL (24) behind only the Tigers (21). With 102 strikeouts, Boston also leads the AL in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.3), 2nd best in the majors to San Francisco s 4.6 mark. SOX AND YANKS: Tonight marks the 4th of 19 regular season games between the Sox and Yanks in 2014 (1-2 thus far)...they meet next for a 3-game set in Boston, 4/22-24. At 13-6 against New York in 2013, the Sox became the 1st team to win 13 or more games against the Yankees in a single season since the 1976 Orioles (13-5)...The Red Sox hadn t won as many games against the Yankees since 1973 (14-4). IN THE BRONX: Boston is 25-24 (.510) at the current Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009...The Red Sox are the only visiting AL team with a winning record here...the nextbest on that list is the Rays at 21-25 (.457). The Sox went 7-3 in the Bronx last season, matching their most wins at NYY since the 1912 team won 8 here (also 7-2 in 2011). ONE 2 TO ANOTHER: Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts wears No. 2 in honor of Yankees SS Derek Jeter, who is playing his 20th and final ML season in 2014...Bogaerts is entering his 1st full ML season this year at age 21, while Jeter began his 1st full ML season as a 21-year-old in 1996. FELIX AT THE STADIUM: The Red Sox have won each of Felix Doubront s 1st 3 career starts in the Bronx...In the last century, Boston has won a pitcher s 1st 4 road starts in New York just 5 times -- Jon Lester (2010-11), Roger Clemens (1987-89), Jim Lonborg (1967-68), Yank Terry (1942-44), and Babe Ruth (1916-17) -- and the club has not won any pitcher s 1st 5 road starts against the Yankees as a Red Sox. ALWAYS ON: With a single yesterday, David Ortiz has now reached base safely in each of his 25 games played against the Yankees since the start of 2012 (.419, 39-for-93, 13 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 20 BB)...It is the longest active on-base streak against the Yankees among current major leaguers. Ortiz is the 1st Red Sox to reach safely in 25 straight games against the Yankees since Dustin Pedroia s 25- game streak from 5/8/10-7/28/12...The last longer such stretch by a Red Sox was 30 in a row by Kevin Youkilis from 5/11/06-9/15/07. ROOKIES ROLLING: Red Sox rookies Xander Bogaerts (.286 AVG,.388 OBP) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (.276 AVG,.382 OBP) have combined for a.282 AVG (20-for-71) with 4 doubles, 5 RBI, 12 walks, and 12 runs scored. On the team, only Grady Sizemore tops either of them in OBP (.394)...Bogaerts and Bradley are tied for the team lead with 6 runs scored each. REPETITION PROPOSITION: The 2014 Red Sox are attempting to become the 1st team to win back-to-back World Series titles since NYY won 3 in a row, 1998-2000. The Red Sox have won consecutive World Series titles once before, in 1915 and 1916...The only other time the club won the AL crown in 2 straight years was 1903 (won the WS) and 1904 (WS was not played). THREE OUT OF TEN: The Red Sox have won the World Series in 3 of the last 10 years -- 2004, 2007, 2013 -- following an 86-year Championship drought...it marks the most titles among MLB teams in the new century. Since new ownership took over in 2002, the Red Sox have won 1,103 games, 2nd in MLB to NYY s 1,161. SOPHOMORE SKIPPER: John Farrell led the Red Sox to the World Championship in 2013, his debut season as Red Sox manager...he was named AL Manager of the Year and finished 2nd in BBWAA balloting. The only skippers to win a World Series in each of their first 2 years piloting a team are Ralph Houk (1961-62 with NYY) and Casey Stengel (1949-53 with NYY). MANY RETURNS: Along with Farrell, Boston s coaching staff has returned in its entirety for the 1st time since all 2007 coaches came back for the 2008 season.
