LittleOwlsHut Crochet and Sewing Pattern By Galina Astashova Skill level: Experienced Mary the Elephant About this pattern The toy is crocheted in continuous spirals without joining the rounds. You will need a stitch marker to keep track of where the beginning of each round starts. Move the marker up to the first stitch of the next round after finishing the previous one. If you don't have a stitch marker you can always use a scrap of contrasting yarn instead. You can see it in my photos. I use USA terminology for my pattern (don t worry if you use UK terms, all the differences are explained in the pattern). Finished size Approx. 40 cm (15.7 inches) tall using the materials stated in the pattern. Happy crocheting! Materials and tools ü Yarn: - main color yarn I used slightly less than 100 g of Andre Classic by Alpina (60% acrylic, 35% rayon, and 5% spandex, 530m/100g). - brown color yarn for the shoes - I used small amount of Jeans by YarnArt (55% cotton, 45% acrylic, 160m/50g). - beige fluffy yarn for the fringe I used Swan s down by Nazar (100% polyamide, 100g/170m). Tip: You can buy this yarn here https://www.etsy.com/shop/littleowlshutrussian Tip: See GAUGE SECTION to check if you have chosen the correct yarn. I recommend that you use stretchy chenille type of yarn rather than smooth yarn. My yarn stretches a lot when stuffing. So if you use another type of yarn with the same gauge test, your toy might end up much smaller than the size stated in the pattern. ü Matching steel crochet hooks. I used 1.25 mm for the main yarn and 1.5 mm for the shoes. ü Single core copper PVC electrical wire 3 mm in diameter for the neck I used approximately 40 cm (15.8 inches).

LittleOwlsHut Crochet pattern 2017 ü Any stuffing. ü Sewing thread of matching colors for sewing small pieces. ü Sewing needle and tapestry needle for needle sculpting. ü Fabric tape 1-1.5 cm wide to work up the wire (the one you use to cover wounds). ü Wooden stick for stuffing hard-to-get places. Tip: If you don t have special sticks for stuffing, it is very convenient to stuff hard-to-get-to places using wooden sticks, toothpicks (if opening is very small), or brushes of different thickness with wooden handles. ü Two glass or plastic ready-made eyes I used 15 mm in diameter. ü Any material for tinting. ü Four plastic joints I used 2 cm (0.8 inches) in diameter (you can use cotter pin joints, nut-andbolt joints or thread joints instead). Also safety eyes can be used instead of plastic joints. ü Two buttons for the shoes (I used 1 cm (0.4 inches) in diameter). ü Decorative button or any other decoration for the dress. ü Big button to make the flower for the hair I used 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter). TO MAKE CLOTHING: ü A piece of cotton polka-dot fabric I used 30 cm x 50 cm (11.8 inches x 19.7 inches). ü A piece of soft netting I used 200 cm x 4 cm (78.7 inches x 1.6 inches). ü A piece of white knit fabric for the pants I used 20 cm x 50 cm (7.9 inches x 19.7 inches). ü Knitted lace I used approximately 100 cm (39.4 inches). ü White bias tape or ribbon I used approximately 40 cm (15.7 inches). ü White velvet ribbon for the belt I used approximately 30 cm (11.8 inches) you can use bias tape instead. ü Elastic lace for the legs of the pants I used approximately 40 cm (15.7 inches). ü Round elastic for the headband I used approximately 50 cm (19.7 inches). ü Velcro tape I used a piece 15 cm x 1 cm (5.9 inches x 0.39 inches). ü Elastic for the waistband of the pants. 2

LittleOwlsHut Crochet pattern 2017 Tip (make it right) If there are no special notes, the toy is crocheted under both parts of the loop. In some rows, there are special notes: into the front loop only or into the back loop only. In that case, you need to follow these instructions. Tip (make it right) When making toys the right side looks like this: And the backside looks like this: Abbreviations CROCHET ch = chain st = stitch sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet inc = increasing (2 sc in 1 st) double inc = 3 sc in one st dec = decreasing (2 sc together) double dec = sc3tog = single crochet 3 together dc = double crochet Rnd = round TIP (yarn) If you use different yarn, the toy will be bigger or smaller and you will need more or less yarn and wire than stated in the pattern (i.e. thicker yarn will produce a larger toy and you may require more yarn). If there is a record in the brackets in the pattern, multiplied by some number, for example (3 sc, 1 inc) x 3, it means you need to repeat this action 3 times, that is 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc. Tip (gauge) When making toys, you should use a much smaller hook than recommended for the yarn you choose. Make sure you crochet tight enough; otherwise, the stuffing will show through the holes. USA/UK terminology comparison chart. Abbreviations USA Abbreviations UK ch - chain ch - chain sc - single crochet dc - double crochet hdc - half double crochet htr - half treble dc - double crochet tr - treble tr - treble (triple crochet) dtr - double treble dtr - double treble tr tr - triple treble sl st - slip stitch sl - slip stitch Other differences in crochet terminology used: Terminology USA Terminology UK fasten off cast off skip miss gauge tension yarn over (yo) yarn over hook (yoh) 3 Skill levels Projects for first-time crocheters using basic stitches. Minimal shaping. Projects using yarn with basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. Projects using a variety of techniques, such as basic lace patterns or color patterns, mid-level shaping and finishing. Projects with intricate stitch patterns, techniques and dimension, such as non-repeating patterns, multicolor techniques, fine threads, small hooks, detailed shaping and refined finishing.

LittleOwlsHut Crochet pattern 2017 GAUGE (VERY IMPORTANT) Crochet three swatches using your yarns and matching crochet hooks first to make sure that you have chosen the right yarn (use smaller hook than suggested on the yarn label) to make the toy 40 cm (15.7 inches) tall. Crochet tightly. Instructions for all swatches: Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring Rnd 2: 6 inc = 12 Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 18 Rnd 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 24 Rnd 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 30 Rnd 6: (4 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 36 Rnd 7: (5 sc, 1 inc) x 6 = 42 Compare your swatches. They should be as in the picture. the pattern. I recommend that you use chenille type of yarn rather than smooth yarn. TIP (extra markers) You can use extra markers for center front and back of the piece to make sure shaping and body parts are correctly aligned and you have not gone off course. The picture below shows dark round marker and white extra marker to mark the center of the body. #1 yarn for the shoes #2 yarn for the hair #3 main yarn If not, take bigger or smaller hooks than you used before (depending on the result) and work other swatches. If it does not help choose different yarn and make other swatches. NEED HELP WINTH THE PATTERN? You are welcome to ask questions in our Ravelry group where this pattern was tested. Ladies who made this toy would be happy to help. https://goo.gl/bpjmzt Tip (shift stitches) If you crochet with the gauge mentioned in the GAUGE section, you don t have to make any other additional shift stitches than mentioned in 4

All seams are 0.7-1 cm - it depends on your skills and the fabric you choose - the smaller the seam the better. Dress Cut out the following pieces out of polka-dot cotton fabric: - front 1 pc - back 2 pcs - sleeve 2 pcs Also you will need: - a piece of netting fabric (I used 200 cm x 4 cm (78.7 inches x 1.6 inches) - two pieces of polka-dot cotton fabric for the skirt of the dress I used 10 cm x 30 cm / 3.9 inches x 11.8 inches each - white bias tape I used 40 cm / 15.7 inches - velvet ribbon I used 30 cm / 11.8 inches - knitted lace I used 100 cm / 39.4 inches Making up Sew the short edges of both pieces for the skirt together forming a circle of fabric.
