If wearing a race belt, please ensure the number can be seen during the cycling phase a number must be displayed to the rear; and during the running phase a number must be displayed to the front. You will be given a sticker with your race number on to be placed on your bike s seat post. This must be fixed to your bike and be shown to match your race number to allow you to remove your bike from transition at the end of the race. Please also ensure that the seat post number is attached to your bike this is essential for the lap counting system to work as it contains the 2nd timing chip that operates this part. Electronic Chip Timing You will receive your race timing chip and ankle strap at race registration. This must be attached to your ankle (this is where it has been designed to work at its optimum and fixing it anywhere else will jeopardise you getting your race times). Please find your race number marked on the relevant bay, and rack your bike and place any race equipment (e.g. bike, cycle/run shoes, etc) at this spot. Please ensure your kit does not stray into transition aisles. It is recommended that you walk through & familiarise yourself with the routes to/from your bay from/to the entrances and exits of transition prior to starting the race. Remember to leave your bike in a low enough gear, ready for the cycle section. Reminder: there is no cycling in transition: mount/dismount your bike at the mount/dismount points. If you cannot complete a stage, but wish to continue with the other disciplines in the event, you may do so, but you will be disqualified from overall results. You MUST inform the race official of this as soon as you are able to do so. Post-race collection of kit from transition You are asked to collect your bike and kit from the transition area as soon as possible after you finish. If you are one of the later finishers, we may have moved your bike into a secure area inside one of the garages to free up your place in transition. Timing Points The timing points we use between stages are: Run: from when the whistle goes at the start line, to when you enter transition at the end of the run Transition 1 Bike: from when you exit transition on your bike to when you enter transition at the end of the cycle Transition 2 Run: from when you exit transition to start the run, to when you cross the finish line Results Your results will be available from the TV screen and mini printer as you cross the finish line. Prize winners will be announced on the day, and a provisional set of results will be posted on the Xtra Mile Events website within 24 hours after the event, to which competitors will have 72 hours from the time of posting to make queries. Please note The organiser cannot be held responsible for competitors property lost, stolen or damaged before, during or after this event.

OULTON PARK SPRING DUATHLON 2018 General Info & Race Instructions 13 Common rule infringements Drafting If you are entering the standard race, the non drafting rule applies. The sprint race is draft legal see separate section. For the standard race only, new BTF rules state that the draft zone is 12 metres with 25 seconds for passing. Remember to keep left at all times when you are not overtaking. If you are overtaken it is your responsibility to drop out of the overtaking cyclist s draft zone. Helmets Helmets used for events must meet the minimum standards of ANSI Z90, SNELL B90, EN1078 or equivalent a CE mark is not an approved standard. Helmets must be on and securely fastened before removing your bike from its transition space and remain fastened until you have re-racked your bike. Outside assistance Athletes must not receive outside assistance from anyone who is not part of the event team, including being passed drinks or helped with equipment. The only exception relating to outside assistance is for medical issues, or when safety may be compromised. Transition area Rigid boxes are not allowed in transition, only soft bags may be used. If you transport your belongings in a rigid box, it must be removed before the race start. Each athlete has their own space within the transition area, for their equipment. You are not permitted to mark your space, and your equipment must not hinder other athletes as this will be considered as unsporting impedance. When leaving transition for the cycle leg, do not ride your bike until you have reached the mount line. Similarly when returning to the transition area you need to be off your bike before the dismount line. Litter The discarding of gel packs and other items is becoming a major problem at all races. We now have a very strict NO LITTER policy. Gel Packs use them but bring the empty sachet back with you. Do not drop drinks unless you are at a drink station or marshal position. The penalty for littering is instant dis-qualification. Race numbers Athletes need to wear their race numbers at all times during the cycle and run section and they must be clearly visible. During the cycle section the number needs to be displayed at the rear and during the run it needs to be displayed at the front a race belt is useful for this. The race number provided by Xtra Mile Events must not be cut down or altered in any way. The transfer tattoos should be used in conjunction with the official race number and are not considered as a replacement. Unsportsmanlike conduct Our race officials, event volunteers, spectators and other competitors should be treated with respect and courtesy. Please comply with requests from the race official and event volunteers as it will probably benefit you, or help you avoid a penalty. Abusive and aggressive behaviour and language will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Course You are required to follow the course outlined in the race booklet and the race briefing. Not completing the specific course or the right number of laps will result in you being disqualified. It is your responsibility to know the course for each element and the number of required laps. Banned and illegal equipment The use of items such as mobile phones and MP3 players is prohibited during events. Using headphones at any time during the race can lead to instant disqualification. You are not allowed to use a personal recording device (film camera) for any BTF race, this applies to head cams, cameras on the bike, or anywhere on your body. Nudity Competitors who are publically nude at any point of the race risk disqualification. You cannot therefore get completely changed in transition. Nudity also includes being topless during the bike or the run. Bare foot running BTF rules permit bare foot running, however Xtra Mile Events do not believe that the conditions make barefoot running a safe option and therefore shoes must be worn. And finally... The weather in March can be unpredictable and extremely cold. Please bear this in mind when selecting your clothing for the event and ensure you have the appropriate clothing for the duration of the whole event. OULTON PARK SPRING DUATHLON 2018 General Info & Race Instructions 14 Methods for counting laps As it can be easy to get confused when you are counting multiple laps in an event, we have put together some tried and tested methods for counting laps. First of all you need to remember how many laps you need to do. One tip is to write the number on your hand or arm. Bike computer Digital wrist watch Time Handlebar counters Cable tie Alphabet You know the distance of the bike route, so you should be able to work out when you are on the last lap and/or at the end of the cycle stage Press the lap counter button on your watch at the end of each lap. If you know roughly how long it will take you, you can use the real time on your watch as a guide. Use blobs of plasticine or blue tack on the handlebars and move them across at the end of each lap. Use a cable tie attached to your handle or aero bars, and rotate it, so the loose end is up or down, each time a lap is completed. Instead of counting numbers, use the letters of the alphabet; and on each lap think of words beginning with that letter. E.g. start with A on the first lap, then B on the second lap, and so on.
