CCC Welcomes New February Member Ashley Jones ~ Social Member Dear Members, Please join us on Friday, March 17th for an open house at 5:30, the principle purpose of which is to meet and greet newer members. Wear green if you like. We ll be sure to stock plenty of Irish whiskey. (For those of you partial to Clemson, a word of warning: the history of Ireland suggests it is bad form to wear orange on St. Patrick s Day. Just sayin!) Last year, we asked for your participation in our Voluntary Capital Fee program. At the outset, more than 90% of the membership stepped up, allowing us to begin to build a reserve fund to cover capital improvements and repairs. We ve had an influx of newer members since its inception. As a result, our participation rate has fallen to 80%. Nevertheless, the fund reserves have been strong. If you have deferred, please join us in improving our infrastructure. We ve used the Voluntary Capital Fee to pay for a new fryer for the kitchen, and now we will make monthly payments toward replacement of the pumps that irrigate the property. The old pumps were installed in 1984; we ve kept them going with chewing gum, duct tape, and baling wire well, sort of. Just a few short years ago, we witnessed the consequences of simultaneous pump failures and lost a fairway during a drought period. The new pumps will be more efficient and cheaper to operate. While the water is free to us --thanks to the vision of those who established CCC, the electricity isn t. The pumps come with a new computer interface, providing greater flexibility and precision during irrigation. The roof of the pump house will be removed, a crane will lift the pumps into place, and a new roof will be constructed. The balance of the capital fund will be used for other projects, including anticipated work on the swimming pool. It s easy for members to think of CCC as a business, but it s not quite a business. It s friends. It s pleasure. It s peaceful. You can enjoy it s beauty walking the fairways nearing twilight on a summer afternoon. Columbia Country Club is member-owned. It s yours or it can be. Not every member is a stockholder, but buying a share of stock is more than a good investment and it is a good investment. Member savings each month results in a 12% return, passing the break-even point in about seven years. More importantly, stockholders have a say in our governance. I m looking forward to the Spring. I hope to see you at Columbia Country Club. CCC President

March is a busy month at CCC as the golf course begins showing its color and the spring golf season begins. The staff and I are busy trying to finish any winter projects that remain as well as preparing the golf course for the coming summer. We have completed our pre-emergent herbicide application and have treated any winter weeds across the course. Over the coming weeks, we will be sodding the right side of 18, this will aid in stopping balls before making onto the driving range. Also, we will be sodding some additional area around the chipping green, where the old cart path was removed. I would like to remind everyone to be conscious of their traffic patterns with golf carts and push carts while on the course. Cart entrances and exits, as well as, areas between the greens and bunkers receive enormous amounts of wear during the spring and summer months. This increased traffic makes the areas slower to grow-in and adversely effects playing conditions as well as being costly to repair. Altering traffic patterns, will aid in the turf s quick recovery and improve everyone s playing conditions. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone on the course. Golf Course Superintendent Spring is an extremely busy time for the golf industry and CCC is no different. The staff is gearing up for a hectic few months of golf and social events. As the days get longer I encourage everyone to call the golf shop to schedule a tee time if you are planning to play. Warm weather and longer days mean a full tee sheet. Help us help you enjoy your round by scheduling tee times in advance. We try to accommodate everyone but some days can be difficult. Be on the look out for Columbia Country Club s 2017 junior brochure. The golf staff is in the process of upgrading the junior program and elevating it to the next level. We welcome any comments or suggestions as we strive to improve the junior program. Attention Tournament Participants, a Friendly Reminder With the 2017 tournament season getting under way a friendly reminder to all those interested in participating in Columbia Country Club s tournament program. Generally speaking, the Tournament Tees will be set between 6400-6600 yards while the Black Tees (62 and older) will be set between 5700-6000 yards. Your USGA HANDICAP INDEX will be used to determine your handicap for the event. All participants must have an established handicap through Columbia CC and must have at least 10 scores posted in the past 12 months. Those eligible to play the Black Tees will have their handicap adjusted 3 shots in accordance with USGA rules and regulations. Walking will be permitted in the Club Championship, Senior Club Championship and Match Play Championship ONLY. Carts will be required in ALL other events. We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the tournament program at CCC. See you at the Club! PGA Head Golf Professional
