TM KATE, TIM Drive home with & MARTY Weekdays from 5pm SURF LIFE SAVING QUEENSLAND
WELCOME Welcome to the 2018 Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships on the Sunshine Coast. Over the next three days, some of the fittest and fastest surf lifesavers from all over Queensland will dive into competition to test their skills on the beach and in the ocean. The championships will see more than 1,600 competitors aged from under 17 to over 80 line up in a range of events including surf boats, beach sprints, march past, skis, boards, irons, and plenty more. It s wonderful to see so many surf lifesavers proudly flying their club colours and representing this great movement of ours with such pride and passion. We can often get caught up in the excitement and drama of competitions like this but, at the end of the day, it s important to remember that every race is designed to test the skills that our surf lifesavers regularly use to patrol Queensland beaches and keep swimmers safe. Reading the surf and getting out past the break as quickly as possible might win a gold medal this weekend but, more importantly, that same skillset could help save a life in different circumstances. It s great to be holding our championships on the Sunshine Coast for the first time since 2015, and I wish to thank the Sunshine Coast Regional Council along with all of our event sponsors for their outstanding support leading into the weekend. Good luck to all clubs and competitors in action across the weekend, and a big thank you to the volunteers, officials, and staff who dedicate so much time and energy into making events like this possible. Mark Fife OAM President SLSQ Welcome to the Sunshine Coast, one of the traditional homes of surf lifesaving, for what I m sure will be an outstanding Queensland Championships for 2018. This is one of our major events for our region this year as thousands of competitors and spectators from around the state from Rainbow Bay to Port Douglas - join us for the juniors, youth, opens and masters competitions, headquartered at two of Australia s premier beachside locations, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland. Across 350 events and six days, we look forward to witnessing inspirational efforts in the water and on the sand, and admiring your tenacity, teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication. We are very proud of our community-focused Sunshine Coast surf lifesaving clubs and their volunteer members who are on our beaches protecting our residents and holidaymakers each year. If you ve been a visitor to our region previously, I m sure you will be impressed by the great progress our healthy, smart, creative Sunshine Coast has made in recent times. Our new greenfield CBD is coming out of the ground in Maroochydore, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is open at Kawana, the award-winning Sunshine Coast Solar Farm is now delivering power into the electricity grid and work is underway on our Sunshine Coast Airport expansion. To all competitors, I wish you the very best of luck in whichever events you have elected to contest. And thank-you and congratulations to Surf Life Saving Queensland, their partners, sponsors and volunteers for helping to turn on such a wonderful event each year. I look forward to watching the action. Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Mayor Surf Life Saving Queensland would like to proudly acknowledge and thank the Queensland Government Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing for their ongoing support of the delivery and development of surf sports within our association. Through committed funding support, Surf Life Saving Queensland continues to create sporting opportunities to enhance grassroot participation, talent identification, participation pathways, athlete development, mentoring programs and club engagement through structured statewide programs, activities and events.
