Tom was elected to Life Membership of our club in 1967. He will be dearly missed and we offer our heartfelt condolences to Sandra, family and friends. Last week Deputy President Wade Lee advised the Board of Management that he has received a promotion within the Queensland Police Service, and as a result is no longer able to fulfil his role as Deputy President for Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. Wade is a valued Life Member of the club and has been a stabled and committed Deputy on this Board of Management and Supporters Club committee. His contributions to both Boards will be greatly missed. We wish Wade the very best in his new role. Congratulations must go to our Board of Marketing and the Supporters Club Management team for working together to create another great day out for the 13th Sports Luncheon. Not only a great day, but all money raised goes back to our patrolling members and our two Olympians Alyce Burnett and Jorden Wood. What a great day. We have a new surf girl for 2016-17 seasoning I wish Darcy Starr-Thomas good luck for the season and encourage all members to support Darcy Congratulations to Ben Ellwood who last Friday night at the Sunshine Coast Branch dinner was recognised for his contributions to lifesaving and youth development when awarded 18-25 Young Lifesaver of the Year 2016 in recognition. At the Branch Dinner the much sought after Bulk Wilkes Shield was won for the 3 rd time by Marcoola SLSC. As President I congratulation Marcoola on their strong patrol culture, but I want to highlight to Maroochydore members that we placed last (14 th ) on the point score. A very poor result. After discussions with Scott Steel (Director of Surf Lifesaving) I am encouraged that your Board of Surf Life Saving has put a top 5 place in the Bulk Wilkes Shield high on their list of areas to improve in the coming season. Our Winter Bronze squad started 2 weeks ago with 12 enrolled. One of the larger squads we have had in recent times. I d like to welcome the new members to our club, and will catch up with the squad in the coming weeks to introduce myself. Club administration has set up email accounts for all our Directors. Please use and quote these email addresses and use them as the best way to forward correspondence. Lifesaving News Scott Steele - Director of Lifesaving Email: DOLS@maroochysurfclub.com.au Mobile: 0458 003 622 We have a new IRB - and her name is "Tracey -Lee". In honour of Tracey Layton, who has given tireless energy to training, driving, maintaining & all things IRB for the last 16 years. For those not aware, a few months ago we had a naming ceremony for "Layto" - now the second youngest IRB in the fleet. For the next 5 years, "Tracey- Lee" & "Layto" will be in service to meet our many IRB needs under the watchful care of new IRB captain, Drew Moles. The new Board of Lifesaving have had our first meeting and they are a truly impressive group. The wealth of experience & knowledge in the group ensures that each issue raised is addressed from all angles. With three youth on the board as well this year, we keep the young perspective present in each discussion. Needless to say, I was suitably impressed by the first meeting and am excited about the year ahead. Thank-you to those who have let us know of your intentions to patrol again next season & any specific requests. We now have a draft of the competition calendar so will have rosters out by the end of August. We'll endeavour to avoid having multiple versions but inevitably feedback from the first release means changes are required. The more you can feed through now, the better chance we'll have of getting it right first time. On patrols, deputy president Wade Lee is looking into the concept of full day patrols this season. At this stage, two patrol captains have expressed their interest in this concept. To be eligible, the patrol will need back up qualifications of each award to enable rest breaks through the day. Those interested in full day patrols should also let us know as soon as possible so we can assess whether this will be possible and include them in the rosters. Finally, to the patrol captains for the upcoming season. We are planning a season kick-off meeting for the afternoon & evening of Saturday, September 10th. As with all PC meetings, we need every patrol represented so if that date is a problem, please organise vice-captains or another representative of the patrol to attend. For anyone wishing to do so, I'm encouraging PC's to stay in the dormitories at the club that night to soak up a bit of the history & tradition that they bring to the "Black Swan" of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. S.S Tracey joined MSLSC in 1999 and gained her Bronze Medallion on 12 December that year, quickly followed by attainment of the Silver Medallion IRB Driver award in July 2001. Tracey started IRB Crew and Driver training for the club in May 2003 and has continued ever since putting 100 s of members through their paces to successfully complete their training. Congratulations Tracey and thank you for giving up so much of your time for our club and its members. SAVING LIVES SINCE 1916

Sunshine Coast Branch Awards of Excellence Congratulations Congratulations to Ben Ellwood for receiving the 2016 18-25 Young Lifesaver of the Year award at the Sunshine Coast Branch Awards of Excellence night. Ben was recognised for his contributions at Maroochydore SLSC which he is the YDO, a Patrol Captain, club trainer, member of the Boards of Administration & Membership and Surf Life Saving, Shimoda Exchange committee member and someone who always puts his hand up to volunteer for the club. Ben also played a major part in the planning and coordination of this year s UQ SLSQ Leadership of Excellence Program held in July. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

Coach Nathan Grieg - Head Coach Email: coach@maroochysurfclub.com.au Hello all, The Senior Squad has now settled back into the training routine, the body is moving once again and we are working out of general movement and into building our aerobic base. The Nippers will commence their training in August and both squads will quickly be into some quality distance work. The Australian Pool Rescue Titles will be held on the Gold Coast form August 5 th 7th. The team won the overall point score at the State Titles. Hopefully they can repeat this performance and bring home the victory. Good luck to everyone competing, race hard! Alyce Burnett and Jordan Wood are now experiencing their first Olympic Games. What an amazing experience for this duo and how proud does this make us feel as a club. Make sure you tune into the Kayaking and support these two fine athletes in their quest for glory! The general attitude has been positive and responsive. For the squads to thrive there needs to be both competitive and supportive elements. The more you push each other, the more the standard lifts. The more you support each other the more you will want to win for each other. Great team victories build great clubs, work hard and do it together! Maroochydore SLSC Merchandise Clive Herrald - Club Chaplin Email: clive@globalpensiontransfers.com Mobile: 0418 885 048 Sometimes it is easier to walk away and say nothing. Just a few weeks ago I was having a quiet drink with a few mates and fellow club members at the club, which was particularly busy that Friday night. There had been a function upstairs which had gone all afternoon and by the looks and sounds of those who stayed on in the club to that night, a good time had obviously been had by all. Not long after I arrived, I was standing at the bar having just ordered a round of drinks, a guest, presumably from the function, walked up to the bar and as he did so he bumped into me. I did not recognise him but he immediately made some smart allec comment, basically wanting me to get out of his way. He then said something else to which I responded by saying I will take that as a compliment. Very quickly he retorted another smart allec comment and said it wasn t meant to be. Now it was pretty clear he was not sober. I was. I could have pursued the matter, but it was easier to walk away and not cause an incident. I did notice that he left the club not long after. With the often reported incidents of single punches and alcohol fuelled fights, it would have been easy to press the matter but for what gain. Sometimes when someone does something, or says something that is directed at us, more often than not it is easier and better to walk away and just say nothing. That way, you can hold your head up and know that you have done the right thing. That situation could easily have gotten out of hand but for what purpose. When confronted by someone who is becoming aggressive because of alcohol or drugs just walk away. By prolonging the matter will only fuel the fire and make things worse.. Just walk away. Stay safe.
