154 MEDICAL POLICY: all active participants (Riders, Competitors, Officials, etc.) at PCAWA activities are strongly advised to carry on them, or have with their Team Manager or accompanying adult, up to date information regarding current or previous medical conditions which could require treatment in the future (e.g. Epilepsy, Asthma, Diabetes) or affect the emergency treatment of serious accidents (e.g. allergies or previous head trauma). Any rider who has, or recently had, a medical or physical problem that could impair safe participation in an Activity, must provide an up to date Doctor s Certificate confirming his/her fitness to take part. This Certificate must be produced at the Gear Check prior to the commencement of each activity. A RIDER WEIGHING MORE THAN 53 KILOGRAMS (8 STONE 5LBS) DRESSED TO RIDE, MAY NOT RIDE A PONY 12.2 hands or under IN ANY ACTIVITY. Gear Checkers appointed by the Organiser will check rider's dress and saddlery before the start of the activity. The checking of the bridle must be done with the greatest caution, as some horses are very touchy and sensitive about their mouths. It is the responsibility of the Gear Checker to be aware of current rulings on saddlery. If necessary the Gear Checker may require the bridle to be removed by the competitor, so that the bit may be inspected. If any doubt arises, the Ground Jury should be consulted before the competitor enters the arena. Dress and saddlery may not be changed thereafter without reference to the Official Gear Checker. No item of gear may be used for any other purpose, or in any other way than for which it was designed and intended, e.g.: Running / BIB Martingale may not be used as a Standing Martingale, or using end of reins to hit mount. RIDERS AND HEAT STRESS: It is up to the Judge/Examiner/Coach to give permission for a rider to remove their jumper (if hot). Use of neck wraps soaked in cold water and placed at back of neck under shirt collar is a very effective way of cooling. Participants (for their own safety) should listen to their bodies and retire from participation or competition if affected by the heat. Clubs need to observe riders with this problem and consider Risk Management practices of allowing them to ride in hot conditions. (Formerly p.22, Section Rider Dress General). FOR FULL DETAILS OF DRESS / SADDLERY ETC. SEE GENERAL SECTION OF THIS MANUAL ANY ITEM OF GEAR OR EQUIPMENT, OR COMBINATION OF GEAR AND/OR EQUIPMENT, NOT SPECIFICALLY COVERED IN THIS MANUAL IS NOT PERMITTED HORSES/PONIES MUST BE AMENABLE AND SAFE TO BE GEAR CHECKED NO RIDER/MOUNT COMBINATION MAY TAKE PART IN ANY PONY CLUB ACTIVITY UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY GEAR CHECKED INCOMPLETE or NO GEAR CHECK = NO START Information for Team Managers, most commonly present for Zone and State Championships, can be now found at in the Appendices
