r Gayton Baptist Church 13501 North Gayton Road Henrico, Virginia 23233 804-360-2801 www.gaytonchurch.org/baseball Baseball Clinic 2012 According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, children are joining gangs in the Richmond area as early as the age of nine. NINE-quite an age to be initiated into a violent organized criminal enterprise. (Notel) Teen pregnancy is not even an accurate term these days when girls as young as eleven are having children of their own. In the United States, almost seven thousand children between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth in 2005. (Note 2) In 2008, there were 1,823 teenage pregnancies in the Richmond area. (Note 3) United States Census Bureau statistics report that over 24 million children in America are growing up without a father. (Note 4) astonished. These are incredible facts, but, hardly surprising. We ought to be surprised. We ought to be We ought to be OUTRAGED! Once children reach the age of ten, they begin to think about whom they are and what kind people they want to be. Their needs are easy to see. Chet Emerson of the Boys and Girls Clubs puts it this way, "young people simply desire to be loved accepted and valued." When a void exists in the lives of children, they will turn to sex, crime, and gangs to gain acceptance. One does not need a sociology degree to know this-just ask a police officer, a teacher, or a single morn. One thing is sure: We must intervene at this critical time in their lives! The Spirit of Baseball, Richmond, VA, Year Two In 2011, Gayton Baptist Church, along with dozens of other local organizations, established a free baseball camp in the Northside area of Richmond, VA. Over 70 children attended along with almost as many coaches and other volunteers. As in 2011, the 2012 camp will be held at John Marshall High School. Our target this year will be will be 150 inner city children between the ages of 9 and 13. The purpose of this day is to show boys and girls, who may be facing difficult circumstances, that someone does care about them-that they are loved, they are accepted, and they are valued! We want them to know that they can turn to Jesus Christ first, foremost, and always.

From 1Dam to 4pm we will be teaching nine fundamentals of the sport of baseball. These will include batting, bunting, pitching, catching, throwing, infield, outfield, base running, and sliding. Six stations will be manned by a Head Coach and several assistants. All coaches will have a working knowledge of baseball. This will be a first class operation and a complete skills training day. Volunteers from Gayton Baptist Church, other area churches, and other organizations will be on hand for coaching, registration, lunch Christian counseling and a variety of other tasks. We will provide for each participant a glove, hat, t-shirt, baseball and a Bible. How can you help? If you are reading this, you have been contacted by a member of the Spirit of Baseball Organization Team concerning a donation or volunteering for this camp. We do not anticipate high costs for this event and we would accept any in-kind donations and help you offer. We are looking forward to speaking with you about specific needs. Thank you in advance for your consideration and help. You can sign up to volunteer for the camp by calling or using the Sign-Up Genius at www.gaytonchurch.org/baseball To watch a video presentation of a previous "Spirit of Baseball" camp, go to www.gaytonchurch.org/baseball-camp or You Tube, search the "Spirit of Baseball" to view presentations of the camps from Richmond and Portsmouth, VA. The Spirit of Baseball Job Descriptions for Camp Day COACHES We will be teaching the following baseball skills on camp day: Pitching, throwing, catching, infield (all three bases), outfield, base running, sliding, batting, and bunting. Six skill stations will be set up in which every child will stop (three in the morning, three after lunch). Coaches will be assigned to spend the day at a given station. For twenty to thirty minutes, the coaches will instruct the children in their assigned skill. Two coach's training sessions are scheduled to bring coaches up to speed on the drills. After all, we want this camp to be every bit as well done as a camp in which kids pay. These sessions are not required in order to coach at the Spirit of Baseball. We bring in coaches with over twenty years of experience as well as coaches who have never coached baseball before. The training is mainly for rookie coaches. TEAM MANAGERS The children in the camp are typically divided into 6 teams. Each team will be named after a Major League team and assigned roughly by age. (The age group rule is lax because often kids will want to stay with big brother or sister.) The Team Manager is an adult equipped with the day's schedule and a map of the park. The Team Manager is charged with walking their assigned team through the camp for the entire day including lunch and the Gospel Message. Four to six adults should serve as Team Manager for each team. There cannot be too many. The Team Manger is also responsible for keeping the kids moving focused and orderly. Sport drinks will be at each station so the Team Manager can keep an eye on hydration also. If a Team Manager is also able to coach, he or she may give a coach at the skill station a rest and run the drills for them. REGISTRATION Registration is the nerve center for the camp. This is the first place the kids go to get on the park. Registration workers MUST receive from each child a city liability form BEFORE the child can participate. The form must be signed by a parent or guardian. NO Exceptions. There will be a stack of these forms ready in case a parent brings a child without a form. We will also call home to parents to come sign for children if they do not have a form ready. Registration is also where the kids will receive their hat and shirt. A child will not be allowed to participate unless he or she wears the shirt. Signs designating ages will be set up so the kids can get in the appropriate line. Typically glove fitting comes under registration. The glove fitters usually set up a table several feet from the main tables in order to prevent a log jam. FOOD PREP Hot dogs, chips, sport drinks and cookies will be served at lunch time. A local catering service is donating the use of large grills in order to prepare hundreds at once. People will be needed to grill, package, serve and shut down the food prep area. The children will eat with their team and a Team Manager will come to the food prep area to get a platter with everyone's lunch which will be packaged in a Styrofoam clam sheel box. Everyone can pitch in to clean up. BUS STOP DIRECTORS/BUS RIDERS A city bus will pick up children at stops around inner city Richmond at 9am. Each child that rides the bus MUST have a bus permission form as well as a liability form in order to ride. The City is asking that we have an individual at each stop that morning to establish order and to see to the forms. That person will then ride with the kids to the park. SET UP/CLEAN-UP We'll be starting set up of the field at 6pm on Friday before and at 7am on camp day. Usually everyone pitches in but if you would like to come just to set up and clean up, you are more than welcome.
