A Word From The Publisher Who is man to think so highly of himself. To think that all he has he built or earned for himself. To think he is so special. Sooner or later we all find out we are not that special no matter how good we think we are. One day you are sitting on the top of the world and the next day you are sitting on the top of your roof waiting for someone with a boat to come rescue you. Natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes have a way of cleaning the slate and making us start over. With all of the destruction and loss we learn that there are many people around us who will step into the breach and help total strangers in need. Volunteers who travel to those in need bringing food and clothing and rescue boats. I would never wish for a hurricane or any disaster to happen, but like a silver lining on a storm cloud, Harvey has brought the best out in many of our citizens who have stepped up and are meeting needs. If only for a moment, we are not focused on the many things that divide us as a nation. Instead, we are focused on being a good neighbor and treating others as we would want to be treated. To those who are out there doing that hard work and to those who are helping support them, we say Thank You! To those who are suffering loss from the storm, we pray for your deliverance and recovery. To those who think that it is more important to criticize the First Lady s footwear, you should be ashamed of yourself for being so petty at a time like this! From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for Healthy and Happy remaining days of Summer. Fall will be here September 22! Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Bayou Boeuf Doubles Marathon On July 22, 2017, twenty one Skeet shooters gathered at Bayou Boeuf Skeet Range in LeCompte, Louisiana to shoot in the annual Doubles Marathon hosted by Wade Jones and his family. The weather was hot and the shade surrounding the Skeet fields was really appreciated. In the afternoon, storm clouds threatened, but never really produced a rain delay. We managed to finish in time. At the end of the day, Charles The Hammer Richardson and Mark Harlan tied with 188/200 each. Charles took the Championship Honors by beating Mark in the shoot-off. David Hebert took AA1 coming in one bird behind Charles and Mark. Pictured on the left are Mark Harlan and Charles Richardson posing just before their shoot-off. Just over their shoulders you can see Suzanne Jones looking on. She really didn't want to be in the picture so please don t tell her about it. Page 8

Bayou Boeuf Doubles Marathon Two of Wade and Suzanne Jones daughters, Julia Callis and Jennifer Gilchrist [pictured on the left] are getting pretty good at hosting Skeet shoots. Of course Wade Jones [pictured below] was there to offer expert advice as needed. We enjoyed a delicious fried catfish lunch with hushpuppies, French fries and Cole slaw. There we also those famous pies from Lea s in LeCompte brought by David Hebert. From my observations, I believe everyone had a great time. I look forward to shooting at Bayou Boeuf again next year. North Louisiana Open The Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB hosts six registered Skeet shoots each year. Most are one day programs. The North Louisiana Open is our one three day shoot. This year the North Louisiana Open was held August 25-27, 2017. We had 30 competitors, some choosing to shoot Saturday only and some Sunday only. The weather man cooperated giving us mild temperatures, overcast skies and no rain all weekend. While we did not get rain, the cloud cover was generated by Hurricane Harvey who was dumping 50 inches of rain in South Texas. We couldn t help but think of our neighbors in South Texas. The Doubles event was shot on Friday afternoon. This brought our first shoot-off between Charles Richardson and Randi Corley who both posted 95s. Charles won the one station shoot-off taking the Champion title, trophy and a case of shells. Charles Richardson and Randi Corley Page 14

North Louisiana Open David Hebert claimed the 12 Gauge Champion title, trophy and a case of shells posting a 98. Hot on his heals were David Bryan and Thomas Sanders who posted 97s. Thomas Sanders and David Bryan Doug Walker beat Jared Gay [pictured below left] in the shoot-off for B3, Roland Thibodeaux beat Raymond Haik in the shoot-off for C1. His wife, Chuna, marinated the boneless chicken thighs in her special sauce. On Saturday, shooters feasted on boudin balls, boudin, Cajun sausage, meat pies, chicken wings and a salad bar with all of the fixings. On Sunday, Paul cooked grilled chicken to go with baked beans, potato salad and a green salad bar. Doug and Debbie Frey made desserts. A low sugar but very tasty Very Berry Trifle for Saturday and Paula Dean s Ice Cream Sandwich Cake for Sunday. The latter is not healthy, but definitely well Page 20

North Louisiana Open Reed Dees [pictured on the left] shot his very first registered targets on Sunday. Reed s 87 in the 28 Gauge Event earned him Sub Junior Champ and his 82 in the.410 Bore earned Sub Junior Runner-up. Reed s family and friends came to support him in his first competition, as shown in the photo below. Colton Gutermuth from Tenaha, Texas also shot his first registered targets this weekend. North Louisiana Open Ben Hulsey Paul Williamson, Charles Richardson and Randi Corley The North Louisiana Open went pretty smoothly, as shoots go. We could not have done it without Paul Williamson, Director of Outdoor Recreation at Barksdale AFB and his crew which included referees Kevin Hall, Bobby Rains, Phil Harris, and Ricky Grimsley. Dining on the Road From time to time I have the pleasure of writing about restaurants I have the opportunity to dine at. I must admit that the Dining on the Road feature, which is very popular with our readers, is one of the more fun things I get to do as Publisher of the Red Chute Gazette. This month I wanted to write about a different type of Dining on the Road experience. As we all know, our friends in South Texas and South West Louisiana are dealing with the catastrophic flooding from torrential runs brought on by hurricane Harvey. You have all seen the rescue efforts and tremendous outpouring of assistance from citizens and first responders. I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you about one of the many groups that are working to help feed people in need. The organization I am speaking of is called Operation BBQ Relief. Operation BBQ Relief was founded in 2011 in response to the relief efforts in tornado stricken Joplin, Missouri. Competition barbecue teams from eight states answered the call to feed displaced families and emergency personnel. The group was able to serve over 120,000 meals over 13 days. Page 29

Dining on the Road When disaster strikes, they evaluate multiple factors including the size, destruction, number of people in need and services affected. Based on their analysis, they determine whether or not to deploy and the estimated size, duration and needs. At that time, notifications go out to their volunteers, sponsors and state leads and they begin executing their standard operating procedures. Operation BBQ Relief is surrounded by an amazing group of volunteers and supporters across the country who spring into action when disaster relief is needed. I am told that every $1 donated to them provides a meal to someone in need. As I write this, volunteers from BBQ Relief are in the Houston, Texas area feeding people in need. If you are looking for an efficient way to help people in need in this time of disaster, please consider Operation BBQ Relief. For more information about this group, please visit their website at: www.operationbbqrelief.org. You can also find them on Facebook. Doug Frey Page 30

Funnies Here's a little fact for automotive buffs, or just to dazzle your friends. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 F degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 F degrees inside, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off almost immediately. The Mr. Ford got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. There was no way that Henry Ford was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls. Page 32

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
