SEC Team Championships: 10 TENNESSEE VERSUS TOP 25 Tennessee has fashioned an 11-0 dual-meet record this season that is all the more impressive when the level of competition is considered. The Volunteers have defeated seven opponents who are currently ranked in the top 25. Vol wins over ranked opponents include #2 Auburn, #11 Florida (twice), #12 Virginia, #13 Georgia (twice), #14 South Carolina #15 Southern Methodist and #19 Texas A&M. 2001 SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2001 SEC Championship Meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was filled with excitement for the Tennessee swimming and diving squad. The Volunteers won eight events, including four of the five relays, and set an American record as they claimed the school s 11th runner-up finish. The Vols kicked off the meet in dramatic fashion by establishing an American record in the 200 medley relay in the first event of the meet. The foursome of Gilliam, McDonnell, Hoggatt and Owen reached the wall in a time of 1:25.37 to better the mark of 1:25.76 held by former Vols Craig Gilliam, Jeremy Linn, Jeff Elder and Adam Engle. The Vols had been aiming for the American record since the beginning of the season and produced an outstanding race to achieve their goal. While the 200 medley relay was expected, UT was also able to produce an unexpected victory in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Simpson, Bree, Zane DeWitz and Tannhauser captured the program s first SEC title in that event since 1976. The Vol divers also scored points on the abbreviated first night of competition as Shannon Roy finished fifth in one-meter diving while Gabi Chereches and Jake Dorsey finished 10th and 14th, respectively. The second night of competition at the SEC Championships was highlighted by UT divers Roy and Chereches claiming the top two spots in the three-meter competition and the 200 freestyle relay squad winning the Vols third relay title of the meet. Roy won the three-meter diving title with 610 points while Chereches finished second with 599.70 points. The title was the second for Roy, who also captured the three-meter crown as a freshman in 1998. Chereches had won the three-meter event the previous two seasons. Dorsey also scored in the event with a 13thplace finish. Vol sprinters also gave a strong performance throughout the meet, who captured the 200 free relay and placed three swimmers in the championship final of the 50 freestyle and another pair in the consolation final. The team of Hussey, Gueraldi, Mike Burton and Gilliam reached the wall in a time of 1:18.17 to claim the 200 free relay title. Hussey was UT s top finisher in the 50 free with a fourth-place time of 19.93. Gueraldi (fifth) and Gilliam (seventh) also claimed spots in the final while Burton (12th) and Owen (15th) scored in the consolation heat. McDonnell led a contingent of four Volunteers in the 200 individual medley. McDonnell finished third while DeWitz was sixth, Bree was 11th and Ben Brink was 13th. In the 500 freestyle, Tannhauser finished fourth and Simpson (15th) and Steve Cromer (16th) scored as well. Brink also finished 14th in the 400 I.M. Tennessee crowned a pair of champions on day three of the SEC Championships as Gilliam and McDonnell each claimed individual titles. Gilliam won his third straight SEC 100 backstroke title with a time of 46.54 in the finals. With the win Gilliam equaled the number of SEC 100 back titles won by his father, Steve, during his UT career. Joining Gilliam in the backstroke were Matt Parrish, who won the consolation final, and Owen who finished 11th. McDonnell won the SEC 100 breaststroke championship with a time of 53.11 to defeated a few heavily favored opponents. The UT junior headed up a talented breaststroke trio for the Vols as classmate Chris Stewart finished fifth and Bree was 13th in the event. Another impressive performance was delivered by Hoggatt in the 100 butterfly. Hoggatt, a junior who did not compete at the SEC meet last season, raced to a second-place finish with a time of 47.28, just.15 off the winning time. Joel Shapiro finished 12th in the event. Tannhauser continued to pace the Vol distance swimmers with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle. DeWitz finished 13th in the 200 free. The Vols closed the evening with a secondplace finish in the 400 medley relay. Gilliam, McDonnell, Shapiro and Hussey combined for a time of 3:10.04 to claim the runner-up finish. The final evening of the SEC Championships saw Tennessee claim two more championships as the Vols finished in second place. Chereches claimed his third straight SEC title in platform diving. The Vol senior punctuated his dominating performance with a final dive that received perfect scores from six of seven judges. Dorsey placed 13th in the event. The Tennessee sprinters executed again with UT s fourth relay victory of the meet in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of McDonnell, Gueraldi, Hussey and Gilliam took the title with a time of 2:54.27. Additionally, Gilliam captured the runner-up spot in the 100 freestyle as he missed the victory by.03 of a second. Gueraldi (sixth-tie) and Hussey (eighth) also competed in the 100 free final while Owen (14th) and Hoggatt (15th) scored in the consolation heat. McDonnell completed a big weekend with a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. McDonnell was one of four Vols to score in the event. Bree finished fifth while Stewart won the consolation heat to finish ninth and Brink placed 13th. On the weekend the Vols compiled 632.5 points to take second place. McDonnell led the Vols and tied for second in the conference by scoring with 52 individual points. Gilliam tied for sixth in the conference in scoring with 49 points and Chereches was 10th with 44 points and second among divers. Following the meet, Gilliam was named as the swimming performer of the meet and Chereches the diving performer of the meet. UT s Dave Parrington was tabbed as the diving coach of the meet as his divers won two of the three events. UT AT SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS Tennessee has won 10 Southeastern Conference Championships since the pool program returned to Knoxville in 1968. The most recent title came in 1996 as UT played host to the championships and treated the Student Aquatic Center crowd to a school record 846 team points. The 1996 title was the second as a coach for Vol skipper John Trembley, who led the 1989 squad to championship in his first season as coach in 1989. The Vols first SEC crown came in 1969 when legendary coach Ray Bussard took his second team, consisting of freshmen and sophomores, to the top of the conference. After a pair of runnerup finishes in 1970 and 1971, Bussard put together a string of seven consecutive conference titles from 1972-1978. HEAD COACH JOHN TREMBLEY Tennessee head coach John Trembley is in his 14th season at the helm of the Vols. In his time, the Vols have finished among the top 10 in the nation 12 times, including five top 5 finishes. Trembley has led the Vols to SEC titles in 1989 and 1996 and to runnerup finishes on six occasions. Trembley has fashioned a 107-10 dual-meet record with a 62-6 mark against SEC foes. Trembley has received numerous awards for his success, including four SEC Coach of the Year trophies.
