Another Place to Be It seems like a lot of these notes are about Scott Vincent and Trevor Cone, so here s one more... The Hokie duo has achieved a lot in their four years in Blacksburg and on Friday of this week, they will accomplish one more... Cone and Vincent will both earn their degrees for Virginia Tech... While they will not be able to participate in the ceremonies back on campus, each will achieve this milestone... Congratulations, gentlemen! Competing With the Big Boys While the Virginia Tech golf team was competing at the Yale Spring Invitational last month, Scott Vincent was 875 miles south/ southwest... Vincent was competing in the RBC Heritage Classic at the Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina... Vincent shot identical 70-70 in the first two rounds and made the cut in his first-ever PGA Tour event... He finished the four rounds even-par and finished tied for 64th place... It marked the first time that an active Virginia Tech golfer played in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since Drew Weaver played in the 2008 Masters... Vincent earned his berth in the PGA Tour event by winning last summer s Players Amateur Championship... Vincent was not alone in the tournament, as Johnson Wagner and fellow Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge also played at Habour Town... de Jonge tied for 18th place in the tournament. Top 6 for Top Notch Person On May 6, Scott Vincent was one of the recipients of the Virginia Tech Top 6 Award, a honor given to six student-athletes that have excelled both in competition and in service to the community... Vincent showed dedication to service through his time spent reading to local preschoolers through the Americorps Reading Hour set up by a fellow student-athlete... He has spent over 20 hours reading to his preschool reading buddy, in addition to his participation in a number of other outreach initiatives. Back Home Again in Indiana This is not the Hokies first NCAA regional in the Hoosier State... In 2010, the Hokies were the 11th seed in the South Bend Regional, hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Club... The Hokies did not advance as a team, but Marshall Bailey advanced as an individual to the national championship, held that year at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee... In the 2008 NCAAs, Jurrian van der Vaart advanced as an individual to the nationals at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana... van der Vaart finished ninth overall, the third-best individual finish for a Hokie golfer. New Faces Next Year During the early signing period in November, Virginia Tech announced that Will Duma (Atlanta, Georgia), Blake Fiest (Huntersville, North Carolina) and Logan Yates (Ruckersville, Virginia) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Virginia Tech and play golf for the Hokies in Fall 2015. Jay s the Only One When the Hokies tied Georgia Tech for the 2007 ACC Men s Golf Championship, Virginia Tech head coach Jay Hardwick became the only coach in NCAA history to win conference titles in four different Division I athletic conferences... Prior to winning the ACC, Hardwick had led the Hokies to conference titles in the Metro, Atlantic 10 and Big East Conferences. Jay Hardwick Too Sharp of a Coach Of the 12 players ranked ahead of Associate Head Coach Brian Sharp on the Virginia Tech all-time scoring list, 10 have been coached by Sharp... Only current PGA Tour competitors Brendon de Jonge and Johnson Wagner were not coached by Sharp... Sharp was the all-time leading scorer in Virginia Tech Brian Sharp history when he graduated in 1995... Sharp was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. They Will Be Joining Us Soon On May 13, 2013, Virginia Tech announced the addition of women s golf as the school s 22nd intercollegiate sport... On July 8, 2013, Carol Robertson was hired as the program s head coach and in the fall, Robertson signed her first recruiting class... The players, Amanda Hollandsworth and Allison Woodward redshirted the 2014-15 season and the program will play its first event in the fall of 2015 on September 20-22 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina. Hokies on the PGA Tour A pair of Hokies are currently competing on the PGA Tour... Johnson Wagner won his first-ever PGA Tour event at the Houston Shell Open in 2008, earning him a berth the next week at the 2008 Masters Tournament... He won three years ago at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in El Camaleon, Riviera Maya, Mexico on the PGA Tour and won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, 2012, which helped him to claim PGA Tour Player of the Month for January 2012... Former teammate Brendon de Jonge was the 2008 Nationwide Tour Player of the Year... He finished second on the money list and won the Xerox Classic in Rochester, N.Y.... His second-place finish on the Nationwide money list earned him a return to the PGA Tour in 2009; he advanced out of qualifying school to earn his card four years ago and finished 34th on the money list in 2010 to earn his card for the 2012 season... He also played on the PGA Tour in 2007... de Jonge was a captain s selection for the International team in the 2013 President s Cup and was teamed with Ernie Els... Wagner lost in a playoff at the Shell Houston Open last month. The Hokies This Season Virginia Tech won two tournaments this season and has finished in the top five in five tournaments this season... The Hokies best individual finish this season was Scott Vincent s win in Puerto Rico to open the spring slate and Trevor Cone s tri-championship at the 2015 ACC Men s Golf Championship.

We Like this Conference Virginia Tech s athletics program has made quite a splash in the ACC since joining the league in 2004... The Hokie football team won the 2004 ACC Championship and played in the inaugural ACC Football Championship game after winning the Coastal Division title, winning the conference title in 2007, 2008 and 2010... Football coach Frank Beamer has twice been named the ACC Coach of the Year... The men s soccer team advanced to the College Cup in 2007 and the softball team appeared in NCAA Women s College World Series in 2008 and the women s soccer program advanced to the College Cup in the fall of 2013... The men s and women s track & field programs have won 14 NCAA titles by five athletes since 2005... Queen Harrison appeared in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won the 60-meter hurdle championship at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championship and became the first woman ever to win both the 400m and 100m hurdle titles at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championship. A Course to Dye For Virginia Tech s commitment to golf became more evident 11 years ago, when it was announced that famed golf course architect Pete Dye would lead the renovation of the River Course of Virginia Tech... The project, which began on Jan. 5, 2004, was completed in 2006... A new $5.5 million clubhouse was completed in 2010... Upon completion, the course became a Pete Dye Signature Course and was rechristened as the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech... In addition to the upgraded course, a team facility boasts an indoor teaching center, locker room and team meeting room for the Virginia Tech golf team... These improvements were made possible by support from Bill and Alice Goodwin of Richmond, Va.... The gift covered all costs of design and construction... As part of the project, Tech s artificial practice tee was covered and equipped with radiant heaters... The indoor facility was constructed adjacent to the newly-dedicated golf team practice area, which was made possible through the generosity of long-time golf team supporter and scholarship donor, the late C.M. Buddy Neviaser... This facility provides Tech players with one of the finest total practice complexes in the nation. A Good Host Virginia Tech hosted the 2011 NCAA East Regional Golf Championship at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech... This was the first NCAA event hosted on the course... Tech hosted the 1997 NCAA East Regional and the 2004 NCAA Division I Men s Golf Championship at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va. What is a Hokie? The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute... With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body... Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his Hokie yell, which is still used today... Later, when asked if Hokie had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell... It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.
