Certification Criteria Interior Structural Industrial Fire Brigade Member Certification Requirements To be issued certification as an Interior Structural Industrial Fire Brigade Member, the candidate will: Show successful completion of the above pre-requisite requirements. This must be documented on file at the Alabama Fire College, Testing Division. Complete required training hours (minimum 40 per level). Submit the Instructional JPR Verification Sheet Written Examination o Perform to a minimum 70% competency on a 100-question multiplechoice examination per level. One retest after 30 days and within one year of course end date is allowed. Practical Examination o Successfully complete a skills evaluation (2 skills sheets randomly drawn by the AFC Testing Division) working as a member of a team and/or completing individual skills), to a minimum of 70% competency and successful completion of all critical points. Donning/Doffing Personal Protective Equipment NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.1.2.1 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet IFB INTERIOR 36-1 The candidate, given a complete set of personal protective equipment, shall don full personal protective equipment, according to manufacturer s recommendations, perform an assignment, and doff full personal protective equipment. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes 1. Dons boots, pants, protective hood, coat, helmet, and gloves 2. Dons all personal protective equipment properly (no exposed skin except for facial area, helmet strap is tightened, coat collar is up, and all fasteners are secured) CRITICAL POINT 3. Donning Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.1.2.2 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet IFB INTERIOR 37-1 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment, shall properly don a self-contained breathing apparatus, and activate the PASS alarm. The candidate may use ONE of the following: over-the-head method, coat method, or seat mount method. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes 1. Dons SCBA using one of the listed methods and ensures unit is secured and adjusted properly 2. Dons face piece, attaches regulator (if using waist mount regulator, attaches breathing tube to regulator), inhales activating regulator, holds breath for 5 seconds to ensure there are no leaks CRITICAL POINT 3. Exhales forcefully to ensure exhalation valve is working properly CRITICAL POINT 4. Dons hood, helmet, and gloves and ensures there is no exposed skin CRITICAL POINT 5. Changing an Air Cylinder NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.1.2.2 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet IFB INTERIOR 37-2 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment and given and SCBA, shall demonstrate the proper procedure for changing an SCBA air cylinder using the one person method. The candidate may use any SCBA unit available to his/her department. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 2 minutes 1. Doffs unit using proper procedures 2. Closes cylinder valve on the used bottle and bleeds off pressure CRITICAL POINT 3. Disconnects the high-pressure coupling from the cylinder and puts the hose coupling on the ground directly in line with the cylinder outlet (ensures grit and liquids cannot enter the end of the unprotected high-pressure hose prior to attaching it to the cylinder outlet valve) 4. Releases the cylinder clamp and removes the empty cylinder and places a new cylinder into the backpack 5. Checks cylinder valve opening and the high-pressure hose fitting for debris and checks condition of O-ring CRITICAL POINT 6. Connects high-pressure hose to cylinder valve opening and opens cylinder valve 7. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Loosens shoulder strap and then waist strap 6. Shifts SCBA to one side (depending on which side regulator is on) 7. Repositions SCBA and tightens straps after obstruction is cleared Candidate must successfully perform 5/7 steps including CRITICAL POINTS RESTRICTED OPENINGS - BACKWARDS SWIM TECHNIQUE 1. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 20 minutes RESTRICTED OPENINGS - FORWARD DIVE TECHNIQUE 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Centers body between two wall studs and places both arms in front through obstacle, attempting to get elbows past opening 6. Exhales and arms are pulled inward to center of body, allowing firefighter to fall through opening 7. Clears obstacle and uses arms to pull rest of body through opening Candidate must successfully perform 5/7 steps including CRITICAL POINTS RESTRICTED OPENINGS - FULL ESCAPE PROCEDURE 1. Maintains contact with SCBA CRITICAL POINT 2. Maintains physical, visual, or verbal contact with partner CRITICAL POINT 3. Keeps all PPE intact CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks conditions on other side of passage before entry CRITICAL POINT 5. Loosens the shoulder straps and removes waist strap while lying to one side 6. Rolls out of the backpack to the side of the regulator and does not lose contact with strap CRITICAL POINT 7. Rotates SCBA with cylinder valve facing away from firefighter (straps are neat and organized to facilitate easy re-donning) 8. Moves forward keeping SCBA in front and close to body CRITICAL POINT 9. SCBA Emergency Procedures 2012 Edition, NFPA 1081 Chapter 7.1.2.2 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet IFB INTERIOR 37-4 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment and SCBA shall demonstrate controlled breathing techniques and the ability to perform an emergency procedure check on the self-contained breathing apparatus. Warning: No emergency breathing procedure is endorsed by manufacturers, NFPA, ANSI, or any other regulating agency. These procedures should be used only as a last resort in life threatening situations. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes CONSERVATION OF AIR (CONTROLLED BREATHING) 1. Calls a Mayday CRITICAL POINT 2. Inhales normally through nose and exhales normally through mouth 3. Inhales and exhales slowly 4. Proceeds to exit as quickly as possible 5. Repeats steps for three minutes CRITICAL POINT Candidate must successfully perform 4/5 steps including CRITICAL POINTS EMERGENCY PROCEDURE CHECK 1. Calls a Mayday CRITICAL POINT 2. Pre-Incident Survey NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.1.2.3 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet IFB INTERIOR 38-1 The candidate given access to a building and given the necessary supplies such as note paper, pencils, rulers and graph paper, shall prepare a pre-incident survey. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 20 minutes 1. Records all ownership data that is pertinent to building 2. Notes all utilities, hydrants, fire detection and suppression systems CRITICAL POINT 3. Places hydrant wrench on the valve stem operating nut, removes hose loop from hydrant, and flushes hydrant 5. Installs hydrant gate(s) on extra outlet(s) as required by department guidelines 6. Connects hose to hydrant outlet 7. Uses hose clamp properly 8. Opens hydrant slowly and fully and ensures water flow is not restricted 9. Uncouples hose from bed (if hose clamp was used), connects to pumper intake, and releases hose clamp safely 10. Water Supply - Drafting NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.2.6 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet INTERIOR 44-2 The candidate, wearing personal protective equipment and given the assistance of another fire fighter, required equipment (barrel type hose strainer, 10 ft sections of hard suction hose, rubber mallet, utility rope) shall assemble and connect the equipment necessary for drafting from a static water source. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes 1. Checks hard-suction couplings (removes debris; replacing gaskets if necessary) CRITICAL POINT 2. Connects the sections of hard-suction hose (uses mallet if necessary to tighten for an airtight connection) 3. Connects strainer to one end of the hard-suction hose (uses mallet if necessary to tighten for an airtight connection; fastens rope to strainer) 4. Connects the hard-suction hose to the pump intake (uses mallet if necessary to tighten for an airtight connection) At this point the evaluator should have a driver/operator pull the pumper into draft position. 5. Puts strainer into the water (uses rope to move hose and keep strainer off bottom) 6. Search and Rescue NFPA 1081, 2012 Edition, 7.2.8 Industrial Fire Brigade Interior Skill Sheet - IFB INTERIOR 46-1 The candidate, given an assignment, obscured vision conditions, scene lighting, forcible entry tools, handlines, ladders when necessary, and while wearing personal protective equipment including SCBA, shall demonstrate entering a simulated burning and smoke filled environment, conduct search operations, and locate and remove victims if found. The room(s) should be large enough to conduct proper search techniques. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes 1. Sizes up area for hazards, possible egress routes, and safe havens 2. Assess areas to determine tenability of victims 3. Collects all equipment required for searching (working radio, forcible entry tool, flashlight as a minimum) 4.
