VOLVO OCEAN RACE VOLVO Super 40 MULTIHULL TENDER 2017

The fascination of sailing... with the interaction of wind and water works beautifully with the sensations, grace and efficiency of flying. This craft increasingly combines two long desired human passions into one thrilling ride. Paul Larsen, Outright World Sailing Speed Record Holder. vs40

CONCEPT 02 Concept The boat concept centers around the desire for high performance foiling, but married with the practical side of operating on a multiple venue circuit. A boat designed specifically for the Volvo Ocean Race inshore series. A folding system is proposed that enables the boat to be folded up, and fitted within a 40ft shipping container with the minimum of disassembly required. A decksweeper mainsail and modern generation appendages with removable tips ensure the boat is cutting edge throughout the whole wind range, yet practical. SPECIFICATIONS Length Width Mast height Weight 11.75 m 6.45 m 18.10 m 1500 kg I know very well the group of people behind this project. I like the concept and envisage the VS40 expanding as a class outside the Volvo Ocean Race. Santiago Lange, Gold Medalist Rio 2016 and double Bronze Medalist Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

VOLVO VS40 look A modern style to make the boat stand out, with a Volvo car influence. LOOK 07

As a smaller sailor I am excited to be able to finally sail one of these boats! Size is usually a factor that limits me to one or two jobs that no one wants to give away. Jo Aleh, Gold Medalist London 2012.

60 20 75 10 15 5 75 10 90 5 The team is coming up with a really nice package in terms of performance and practicability. The design is crucial for a boat that is able to be raced and manoeuvred around short courses. The foils, sailplan, systems and flight controls have to be right, not only from a sailors perspective but to engage spectators and keep racing close and exciting. Paul Goodison, Gold Medalist Beijing 2008 & International Moth World Champion 2016. 5 90 10 105 5 15 10 Speed [kts] 25 40 105 20 True Wind Angle [kts] 15 120 30 35 30 25 45 20 25 120 60 20 15 25 30 75 10 35 5 30 135 150 90 5 165 40 10 105 35 TWS = 5 kts 15 TWS = 7.5 kts 20 165 40 135 30 TWS = 5 kts 35 150 165 40 Continuous = Jib TWS = 7.5 kts Dashed = Code 0 TWS = 10 kts TWS = 15 kts TWS = 20 kts TWS = 30 kts *TWS measured at 10m above ground TWS = 7.5 kts TWS = 10 kts TWS = 15 kts TWS = 5 kts 150 TWS = 10 kts 120 25 135 TWS = 20 kts TWS = 30 kts *TWS measured at 10m above ground TWS = 15 kts TWS = 20 kts TWS = 30 kts *TWS measured at 10m above ground Continuous = Jib Dashed = Code 0 Continuous = Jib Dashed = Code 0 performance A solution with a level of technology and performance at the front line of foiler development within the operational constraints of the class. Featuring a soft sail configuration for practical handling and transportation considerations, but with an efficient decksweeper mainsail arrangement. Preliminary VPP & CFD work demonstrates the high speed potential of the boat. Two daggerboard tip sizes to cover the full wind range, and a code zero for light wind venues. Options on daggerboard configuration according to the complexity of system desired by Volvo. Ultimate performance would be with the three foil AC configuration and sailor flight control, or a simpler system would be for the four point setup for a small performance loss but lots of practical benefits.

VOLVO VS40 Safety. Sealed mast in order to prevent inversion, following a capsize. Sailing fast foiling boats is inherently dangerous. Through design and training these risks can be minimized though. Consideration was given to a number of factors relating to the safety of those on the boat. Safety equipment: Righting lines, knives, & air bottles, as was standard on the ACC yachts. Netting areas near possible fall zones as crew members cross the boat. Guest racer protective pod in the middle of the central spine. Cockpits for crew protection in the event of capsize, or contact with another boat. Clear view through tramp in the extreme case of full inversion and sails to ensure collisions can be avoided. L rudders: Horizontal foils remain clear of the path of a crew member falling overboard. I love foiling, but it is good to see the safety aspect being considered so early in the design process. Támara Echegoyen, Gold Medalist London 2012.

They are uniquely qualified by their knowledge of both foiling boats and catamarans. Modern foiling catamarans require unprecedented understanding of flight dynamics and controls, key to both performance and safety. Iain Percy, double Gold Medalist Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008 & Silver Medalist London 2012.

VOLVO VS40 FLIGHT CONTROL 17 Battery power will help reduce the physicality of the boat, providing an excellent opportunity for girls to get onboard. Sofia Bekatorou, Gold Medalist Athens 2004 & Bronze Medalist Beijing 2008. Flight Control A number of flight control options are available. A provisional layout would be a version of the ACC technology seen in the 35th AC with helm control of rake on the wheel, and a remote station for another crew member to also have flight control during manoeuvres, or for straight line sailing according to the preference onboard. If a simple system was desired, a four point foiling solution is possible, with less rake control requirement, and no need for daggerboards to be raised and lowered in manoeuvres.

VOLVO VS40 LOGISTICS 19 logistics On arrival to a new venue, the folded yacht is pulled out from the container. In the semi folded state, the daggerboards can be fitted, and then the hulls raised into position and locked relative to the center pod. Systems, ropes, and trampolines are all still rigged as per the previous regatta venue. The two piece mast is connected together and lifted with the canted platform. A crane is not required until the fleet goes into the water, for minimum impact at the regatta site. A ramp launch would be possible if of a suitable size. The mooring set up would be like the proven AC45 arrangement, with rudders locked to allow rotation around the mooring buoy. Not having to assemble the trampoline at every venue is such a relief! Having been involved recently with GC32 campaigns I appreciate the simplicity of the VS40 concept. Antón Paz, Gold Medalist Beijing 2008 & VOR Sailor. The VS40 looks great, I especially like the lack of trampoline and the logistical elements, ease of pack up and assembly is huge. Carolijn Brower, ISAF World Sailor of the Year 1998 & VOR Sailor.

The VS40 looks to provide insane speeds for pure adrenaline, high intensity inshore racing that is sure to wow. Darren Bundock, double Silver Medalist Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008.

MEDIA 23 Media The yacht will house permanently mounted media equipment. Camera mounts on the bowsprit and aft post will not need to come off in order to fit in the container. The aft camera post will just rotate or hinge down for clearance. Potential camera locations would be: Aft camera Guest experience view with a 360 camera just behind the guest racer pod Guest racer close up - a camera trained onto the guest for their reactions Bowsprit mounted camera looking aft at the foils Top of daggerboard lifting posts Mast view looking down Many of the design team members are avid foiling boat sailors, so they surely know what it feels like and how to transfer the foiling experience to spectators. Fernando Echávarri, Gold Medalist Beijing 2008 & VOR Sailor.

Bob has been involved with 5 America s Cup campaigns and specialized in systems engineering since he began, as a bowman, in 1987.

The VS40 simplifies transport and assembly without any performance compromise. Together with its refined aesthetics I think it is the perfect match for the VOR inshore races. Javier de la Gándara, Skipper of Pescanova 93 Whitbread 93-94 and Fastnet Winner.
