CLASS SCHEDULE 2017-2018 Fall: August 21 - December 4 Spring: January 8 - April 28 2nd-4th Grade Musical Theatre: TUESDAYS @ 3:35-4:50 pm 5th-8th Grade Musical Theatre: TUESDAYS @ 5:00-6:00 pm SHOWCASING THIS FALL: 5th-8th Grade Musical Theatre: TUESDAYS @ 5:00-6:00 pm Students will explore all three disciplines of musical theatre specific to age level, including singing, dancing, and acting. The class is designed to expose students to healthy Broadway vocal technique, provide a strong foundation for musical theatre dance styles and prepare them for stage acting. Our goal is to develop confidence, stage presence, and a love for performing. Each semester will conclude with a showcase of excerpts from classic musical theatre repertoire. Through this course, we pray each child will learn to use his or her gifts to bring glory to God! MUSICAL THEATRE 2017

SPA DANCE: CLASS DESCRIPTIONS The School of Performing Arts Dance program seeks to foster a love of dance through quality instruction in various types of dance - specifically in classical ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop in a positive, Christ-centered environment. Mommy and Me [2 ½ to 3 ½] - These classes introduce a structured environment while allowing children to recognize their own individuality and body mobility. Focus is on coordination and rhythm introduced in creative and imaginative ways. Moms or caregivers do all the exercises and movements with their little ones while learning to translate music to movement with worship music and Disney classics. Students are required to wear pink leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Moms or caregivers need to wear yoga attire and ballet slippers. 3 Year Old Ballet [Older 3 s] Calling all Princesses! This pre-ballet class combines ballet fundamentals, basic terminology, rhythm, coordination and creative movement often with popular fairytale music and imagery. Along with an introduction to ballet, the students learn spatial awareness, musical interpretation and performance through praise and worship or popular Disney classics specific to age level. Students are required to wear pink leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Ballet & Tap Class [Pre-K], Ballet & Jazz Class [Kinder/Bridge] These classes will focus on basic ballet and jazz dance technique, rhythms, introducing French terminology and movement quality. Emphasis will be placed on basic overall body alignment and placement of the body. The Pre-K tap portion will develop the student s sense of rhythm, timing, and phrasing while developing movement skills and technique in the art of tap. Various styles of tap will be introduced through popular Contemporary Christian, Disney, and Broadway music. Students are required to wear pink leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Ballet & Jazz Class [1 st -4 th Grade] This class will focus on basic ballet and jazz dance technique, rhythms, terminology and movement quality, while utilizing Contemporary Christian, popular, and classical music. Emphasis will be placed on basic overall body alignment and placement of the body through praise and worship music specific to age level. Students are required to wear black leotard, ballet tights, pink ballet shoe, and black jazz shoe. Students may bring cover up for warmth and/or black Capri to wear on top for jazz portion. Intermediate 1, 2 & 3 Ballet & Jazz Classes These classes will focus on more advanced overall body alignment and placement of the body. As the foundation of all dance movement, ballet strengthens dancers muscular development, cultivates the initial grace of the student, and increases the control of body movement, self-confidence, and self-discipline. This class also will include a COMPANY section, which is a performance group. Dancers will work on specific styles, combining the Contemporary and Lyrical genres. The style uses fluid body movements combined with power and control. It fuses newer philosophies of movement, including modern and contemporary dance, with classical styles, such as ballet and jazz. This creates unique movement that is less formalized than other types of dance, but still incorporates a strong foundation of technique. Students will continue to develop their dance skills with musical interpretation, sustained extensions, fresh movement opportunities and expressive emotion through praise and worship specific to age level. In addition, students will have the opportunity to utilize their gift of dance in church services and ministry opportunities to perform and demonstrate their abilities to lead in worship at Second Baptist Church. Students are required to wear black leotard, pink ballet tights, pink soft ballet shoe, black jazz Capri or pant for cover-up, jazz shoe and/or lyrical shoe. Faculty must approve of student s enrollment given student s prior dance experience and training.** SPA DANCE 2017-2018

SPA DANCE: CLASS DESCRIPTIONS The School of Performing Arts Dance program seeks to foster a love of dance through quality instruction in various types of dance - specifically in classical ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop in a positive, Christ-centered environment. Adult Ballet - Adults and teenagers will enjoy learning ballet while developing confidence, mental concentration, physical coordination, and grace. This class is for students who are new to ballet, students who want to dance, but never had the opportunity, and those who have danced before and want to begin again. Students will continue to learn and develop fundamentals, with a progression toward learning variations. These classes will focus on overall body alignment and placement of the body. Traditional barre, center work, stretching, and ballet combinations will be included through praise and worship and Contemporary Christian music. This is a great class for dancers wishing to experience the joy of dance, and to develop their performance skills! Please dress in modest leotard, sleeveless camisole, yoga pants, leggings, and ballet soft shoe. Intermediate Tap Class [1 st -5 th ] This class is designed to develop rhythm, style, and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique and producing clear sounds while having fun. Various styles of tap will be introduced through Contemporary Christian and Broadway styles of music. Students are required to wear black leotard, pink ballet tights, and black jazz shoes. Faculty must approve of student s enrollment given student s prior dance experience and training. STEPS to BROADWAY (5th and Up) - This class will focus on the fundamentals of Broadway-style Jazz and Tap. Each month will focus on a specific choreographer and style think Fosse ( Pajama Game, Fosse ); Robbins ( West Side Story, Peter Pan ); Jerry Mitchell ( Hairspray ); and Michael Kidd ( Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ). Students are required to wear black leotard, jazz pants or jazz shorts with tan tights, Mary Janestyle tan tap shoes, and tan jazz shoes. For beginners or those with some dance experience. STEPS to BROADWAY, Level 2 This class will focus on the fundamentals of Broadwaystyle Jazz and Tap. Each month will focus on a specific choreographer and style think Fosse ( Pajama Game, Fosse ); Robbins ( West Side Story, Peter Pan ); Jerry Mitchell ( Hairspray ); and Michael Kidd ( Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ). Introduction to Hip Hop This dynamic high-energy class teaches young students basic vocabulary and style of hip-hop movement and technique with no suggestive music/ movement. Dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and self-expression while developing muscular strength, flexibility, and proper isolations of the body. This class enables students to have more freedom of self-expression while utilizing the latest popular Christian Hip Hop and Pop artists. Students may wear their own style of leotard, t-shirt, legging or pant that one can dance and stretch in. Students are not allowed to wear shorts without leggings or anything that shows the midsection of the body. This is an introductory level class so no dance experience is required. It is highly suggested that students also take a ballet/jazz combo class in addition to this class. Intermediate Hip Hop - This dynamic high-energy class teaches students vocabulary and style of hip-hop movement. Hip Hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. OUR GOAL is to help students maximize the potential and personal enjoyment of their Godgiven gifts while training them to be future leaders in performance and ministry. PAYMENT/TUITION You have several options for tuition payment. You may pay in full for the 2017-2018 SPA year; you may pay per semester; you may choose either option and pay by installments (3 installments per semester.) We accept cash, checks made out to SBC, and credit cards. Credit Card Authorization Forms are available on our website, in the School of Performing Arts office (2 nd floor), or in the Worship Ministry office (1 st floor).
