The Wolves and Maroon Tigers will tip from Forbes Arena on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Last Time Out West Georgia moved to 3-0 with a thrilling come-from-behind victory at The Coliseum on Saturday evening, taking down the Augusta Jaguars. The Wolves trailed 41-32 at the half, then shot 75 percent from the field in the second half to remain undefeated on the year with a 92-89 victory. Morehouse moved to 4-0 on the year with an 80-77 road victory over Shaw on Saturday afternoon. The Maroon Tigers come into the game with at least 80 points in each of the first four games of the year. Individuals in the Gulf South Conference Junior guard Marquill Smith is tied for the scoring lead in the Gulf South Conference thus far on the year, as he and West Alabama s Charles Eaton both are averaging 27.0 points per game. Matchup To Watch Both teams have solid guards on the stat sheet this season thus far, with Morehouse led by Tyrius Walker and West Georgia by Marquill Smith. Head Coach Michael Cooney Since 1997, there has been one constant with the University of West Georgia men s basketball program, and that constant has been current head coach Michael Cooney. In the past six years Cooney has been the architect of one of the most successful runs in the history of the program. In both years, Cooney s Wolves won 22 games, marking the second time in school history that a UWG team had as many as 22 victories in consecutive years. Every one of the 44 victories between 2014-16 was a region win, marking the most region victories in a two-year stretch for any UWG squad. Above that, the Wolves tied for the regular season championship in 2015, then went one better as the 2016 Gulf South Conference Champions, defeating Alabama Huntsville in the GSC tournament championship game. The GSC championship team was a juggernaut in the making, as the Wolves finished the regular season in 2015-16 with six straight wins, earning their way into the Gulf South Conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. First up in the quarterfinals was Christian Brothers, a team that had caused trouble for the Wolves in the past. The Wolves jumped out to a huge lead in the first round, then held off a late charge for an 85-82 win to advance to the semifinals. Next up was Union, as Cooney s squad looked to avenge a pair of regular season losses. At the half, things looked bleak, as UWG trailed 38-30. But West Georgia clawed their way back into the game, and with less than two minutes to play, Marcus Dortch s three-pointer put the Wolves up for good and sealed their ticket to the championship game. Facing Alabama-Huntsville, the Wolves were going up against another team that had their number in recent years. All that went away as West Georgia vaulted to a 56-38 lead at halftime and cruised to their first GSC championship since 2002 and the first under head coach Michael Cooney. In addition to being the first GSC Championship team under Cooney, the 2015-16 team also led the nation in steals, averaging 10.1 steals per game. In both years, the Wolves reached the NCAA regional tournament, marking the first time since 2002 that West Georgia reached the regional in back-to-back years. The back-to-back 22-9 records for the Wolves brings Cooney s career head coach record to 144-116, a.553 winning percentage. Both put Cooney in third all-time among UWG head coaches. The summer of 2016 also brought another first for Cooney and his staff, as former UWG guard Alex Abreu earned a spot on the Puerto Rican national team ahead of the Olympic Games, and could become the first UWG athlete in school history to compete at the Olympics. Abreu is the second player that Cooney has coached to go on to play for a national team, joining Darnell Miller. Cooney was Ed Murphy s top assistant at UWG when Miller was here, and MIller played in the NBADL as well as earning a spot on the Virgin Islands national team for the 2007 Pan American Games. Cooney s contributions to UWG s success have been many since his arrival in Carrollton. For 10 years, he paid his dues as an assistant, excelling as a tactician, motivator, and recruiter and in every other way an assistant can contribute to one of the most successful runs in the long and storied history of West Georgia athletics. Prior to coming to West Georgia, Sides was a 1,000-point scorer for LCCC, earning First Team All-Region honors as a sophomore last year. He was ranked among the top-50 in the nation in both seasons in steals, and is already showing why that is the case, as he leads the Wolves in that category with nine. He showed very quick hands in the home opener on Saturday and is 8-for-16 from threepoint range on the year thus far. In addition, he leads the team in freethrow percentage at.769. Smith leads the Gulf South Conference in scoring with 27.0 points per game and has yet to score less than 20 in the first three games. The most came against Augusta on November 18, when Smith scored 18 of his season-high 33 in the second half. Sides went ahead and made it 2-for-2 in leading the Wolves in the top game, picking up his first double-double of the year against Tuskegee. In the game, he had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the UWG contingent. Among his 11 boards were five offensive rebounds, two assist and three steals. Assists Junior point guard Aren Ulmer looked to have eyes in the back of his head against Augusta on Saturday evening, as he dished out eight assists in the victory. He has now had at least six assists in two of the Wolves three contests thus far. Steals The final weekend of the 2015 calendar year for the Wolves was strong in the open court defense side of the game, as the Wolves had one player with five steals in each game. Steph Branch did it against CBU, and Willie Evans against Union. uwgsports.com 4 Instagram: uwgsports @UWGAthletics
