MTP Science Animals, including humans Science National Curriculum Pupils should be taught to: identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement. Lesson 1 To investigate if they can run faster than Usain Bolt/ - To make a prediction - To investigate their prediction - To use a stopwatch - Can they explain what they have found out? - To provide reasons for their results. AUTUMN 1 Main Teaching Who is Usain Bolt? Intro: Introduce the topic to the class, show the children a picture of Usain Bolt, ask the children who he is and why he is so famous? Children may recognize him as an athlete, a sprinter who holds the world record for the 100m. Ask the children to record what they already know about what a runner like Bolt needs to succeed? Activity: Explain that today we will be testing to see whether we are faster or slower than Usain Bolt. The children will predict how long it will take them to run 100m and record it on their sheet. The children will be taken to the school field and be put into mixed ability pairs. One child will run 100m as fast as they can while their partner times them with a stop watch. The children will then swap over. Once each child has completed 100m we will go back into the classroom to compare Stopwatch Investigation sheet

their results with Usain Bolts. The children will record under their predication whether their prediction was correct and whether they were faster or slower than predicted. Plenary: Why did we not run as fast as Usain Bolt? Children to discuss in pairs why they didn t run as fast as Usain Bolt- record ideas on the white board. They may think of ideas such as diet, training, height, age etc. Lesson 2 Main Teaching How does Usain Bolts muscles help him move? To describe and explain how muscles hep us to move. - To understand the function of muscles. - To explain how muscles contract and relax. - Understand what happens to muscles when you exercise. Intro: Look at muscles and how muscles help us to move. Muscles hold the skeleton together, give the body shape, and help it with everyday movements. Look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/muscles-andmovement/2305.html Main: Clip to see the muscles contracting and relaxing as we move. Watch www.kidshealth.org muscles video. Children to label and explain how muscles work in pairs and contract and relax. Children to fill in missing answers and recall how muscles work. Lesson 3 MTP Science Animals, including humans Main Teaching What does a human s skeletal system look like? To describe and explain the skeletal system of a human. - To understand the function of our skeleton. - To be able to label important bones. - To understand which bones protect our organs. - To recognize bones on an x-ray. Intro: Ask the children questions to assess prior knowledge such as what do you have in your body that keeps you upright and allows us to move? how many bones do we have? can you name any types of bones? what would we happen if we didn t have a skeleton? what is the function of a skeleton? does the skeleton grow?. The children are shown a Power point about the human skeleton and why our skeleton is so important. Ask the children would your skeleton be the same size as Usain Bolts skeleton? - discuss what bones they already know and ask the children to point to them on their own body. Discuss the functions of some of the bones such as the skull, the ribs and the spine and what organs/nerves these bones protect. Ask children if bones can break and how strong bones are. Lesson 4 To learn about exo and endo skeletons. - To recognize animal skeletons. - To recognize which animals have endo and exo skeletons. - To sort animals by their skeleton - To recognize the advantages of exo skeletons. Main Teaching Does an animal s skeletal system look the same as Usain Bolt s? Intro: about the role of a skeleton for humans and ask the children why skeletons are important for animals to? Show children a picture of animal skeletons on a PowerPoint and ask them with their talking partners to try and guess which animals the skeletons belong to. Ask the children- what qualities of the skeleton made you think it belonged to the animal? Children complete to match the animal with their skeleton. Main teaching- Discuss with the children think what exo skeleton might mean and endo skeleton. Exo means outer and endo means inner. Ask the children: do humans have an exo or endo skeleton? Discuss which animals have an exo skeleton and which animals have an endo skeleton. Ask children: Do you think all animals need a skeleton? Which animals do you think don t? Discuss animals without a skeleton. Task- children sort animals into exo and endo skeleton groups. PowerPoint Animal skeleton sorting activity. Lesson 5 LO & STS To learn about hinge joints and ball and socket joints. Plenary: Discuss what the advantages of an exo skeleton are. Main Teaching Can Usain Bolt run without his joints? Muscles and joints allow movement. Intro : Ask the children to turn to their talking partner and ask how do we move? What bones do we use? The children might answer with legs, arms, feet and then hopefully knees, elbows, ankles. Ask children to bend their legs and arms and ask them- what would happen if we could not bend, would we be able to : Powerpoint Bolt picture

- To highlight the joints in our skeleton. - Explain how joints help us move - Name and give examples of ball and socket joints and hinge joints. - Explain the differences between the joints. - Name the activities we use certain joints for. Lesson 6 - To be able to label the circulatory system. - Name and explain the role of the heart, lungs and blood vessels in move? Ask children what is a joint? Two parts of the body fitted together do you know how many types of joints there are? do you know how many joints we have in our body?. Ask the children to identify which parts of our body is a joint and discuss how this point helps us move. Main: After looking at a PowerPoint-which discusses what joints are and different names for them (ball and socket/hinge), children to have a picture of Usain Bolt in front of them and label and explain the joints Bolt uses when he runs. Plenary: Play with the class- Simon says move your joints (Simon says- move your knees). Main Teaching How are nutrients, water and oxygen transported within humans? Intro: Starter: List the vital organs in our body. Explain to the children that the heart is a vital organ and this is what we will look at to find out how nutrients, water and oxygen are transported within humans. Key question: what is the role of the heart? Ask the children, how do you think oxygen, water and nutrients are carried? Discuss the role of the blood. Ask the children, if we have looked at the skeletal system, the muscular system what do you think this system is called? Ask the children to find their heart and feel it beat, ask the children what a pulse is? And then ask the children to find their Circulatory system powerpoint Circulatory system diagram to colour and label.

the circulatory system. - Understand the role of capillaries, arteries and veins. pulse. Inform the children that the heart beats even at night time to transport the oxygen around the body. Tell the children that oxygen is key for our brain to work and function. Also explain to the children that the bigger the animal the fewer times the heart beats- such as a whale (only 15 beats per minute) compared to a mouse (600 beats per minute). A human has about 77 beats per minute. Main: teach the children about the circulatory system in detail. Use a PowerPoint to assist this. After the PowerPoint ask questions to find out what the children understood such as what carries oxygenated blood? what carries deoxygenated blood? what colour is oxygenated/ deoxygenated blood? Children label and colour circulatory system. Discuss what capillaries, arteries and veins are. Plenary: Play BBC bitesize quiz.
