Have you seen the Arrow? Ordeals begin with a flame...

Breaking News! The May Ordeal produced 32 Candidates to go through their Ordeal at Camp McKee, 8 Brotherhood Conversions, and 46 attending members. That s a grand total of 86 people at our first Ordeal of the year! There s a website just for new OA Members that can teach you some really helpful stuff. Check out http://www.jumpstart.oa-bsa.org/ for some awesome info! But don t forget to stop by http://www.kawida.org/ too! McKee in 2010 to be BIG! Summer camp is just around the corner and along with earning Merit Badges; there will also be Order of the Arrow activities. This year the lodge will be offering Brotherhood conversions, a member only movie night, and a tap out ceremony. The OA Camp Chief will be shared between est sed est. Andrew Anderson and Aaron Shepherd, both working on summer camp staff. The Brotherhood conversion will be on Tuesday night. Any Ordeal member who has been in the Order for at least ten months will have the chance to convert to the Brotherhood honor. Once you are at camp be sure to stop by the administration office and sign up. It is best to show up Sunday night in order to have time to study the basic OA knowledge that you will need to know. The Brotherhood test will be given right after lunch on Tuesday at the OA Slab. The member only movie night will be Thursday at nine in Keeneland Hall. Be sure to wear your OA sash to this movie or you may not be let in! Aaron will have a preapproved list of movies for everyone to pick from and after a short vote, the winning movie will be the one played. This is a great time for Arrowmen to mingle with new faces and meet new friends. The Friday night tapout ceremony will be the most important public display of the Order of the Arrow. Shown at the Friday night campfire in front of the entire camp and parents, this ceremony will need a lot of man power from the Arrowmen attending camp. If you are interested in helping with this there will be a meeting Monday after lunch on the back porch of the dining hall. Along with the weekly events at camp there will also be two Ordeals on weekends. The first Ordeal will be after the first week of camp, June 18 th and 19 th. The second Ordeal will be after the last week of camp, July 9 th and 10 th. Both of these Ordeals will be a great time for elected candidates to be inducted into the Order. Overall, the events this year at camp this year are going to be fun and exciting. Be sure to take advantage of these once in a life time opportunities, only offered during summer camp at Camp McKee. --Aaron Shepherd, Lodge Chief Brotherhood You can: a.) Experience the excitement of charging candidates with their tasks and the Obligations as ceremonialist, b.) Feel the satisfaction of guiding candidates through their ordeal as an Elangomat, c.) Do a little service by helping directly with the ordeal, d.) Hang out with all the other Arrowmen who will be there or e.) As many as you want! Whatever, you do, your presence will be welcome, and you will have fun guaranteed. (I should know; this is my 6 th.) Don t forget! If you ve been an ordeal member for 10+ months you are eligible for Brotherhood conversion. Becoming a full brotherhood member is great if you want to continue to come, if you want to really feel a part of something more, or if you want to support your lodge. --Sunder Willett, VC of Brotherhood

A Challenge My fellow Arrowmen, are you prepared for Kawida 2010? Are you ready for the challenges that await you? Are you ready to participate in the Ordeals that will inspire and create a new life meaning for those who are willing to take the Ordeal challenge? member of Kawida, be it Ordeal, Brotherhood, or Vigil to step forward and accept this great task. Show that you are willing to work in meaningful labor, to lead others, inspire those around you, and sacrifice your time to better a Camp that is in need of it. Well this summer will provide the opportunities for you to I ask and challenge Vivamus help and participate in porta everyone who reads the Ordealsest that will this article needs to sed est. take place during come to these Ordeals Summer Camp. I during Summer Camp encourage every and show to me what it Conclave 2010 means to be a member of Kawida Lodge. Show to me that we are members of the Order of the Arrow, who take great joy in cheerful service. Come to Camp McKee and work alongside your fellow Arrowmen. To all of you, I say thank you for what you have done for this Lodge. --Andrew Anderson VC of Service

Message from the Chief The winter months have passed and we have already had our spring fellowship and the section Conclave. I want to thank all of the Kawida members who attended the Conclave this year. I know I was est sed est. busy with my duties as section secretary and wasn t able to spend time with everyone in my lodge, but from what I ve heard we all had a great time. If you have any suggestions regarding Conclave for this year, feel free to tell me, and I will pass it on. Summer time is quickly approaching and that means it is time for Ordeals, Brotherhood conversions, and summer camp! This year at camp we will be doing more Order of the Arrow activities than in the past. Be sure to check out the summer camp article on the front page for information about this. We have two Ordeals planned this summer; one at the end of the first week of camp and one at the end of the last week of camp. Please be sure to sign up for these events, even as an Arrowmen. There is plenty to do as a returning member and we need a lot of help this year from everyone to make this year a success. If you need any help regarding OA in your chapter or district feel free to contact me. I visited Somerset in April to help with their Order of the Arrow booth at the 100 th Anniversary of Scouting expo and also conducted a call out ceremony. We have the resources all across our lodge to do these kinds of things, just let me know where they are needed. I hope to everyone at summer camp and at the Ordeals. See you then! --Aaron Shepherd, Lodge Chief The 2009 Frank Seale Kawida Lodge Vigil Class! From left to right, Charlie Ballman, Tom Hill, Alex Hill, and Doug Ramey. Graham and Elizabeth Fielder will go through at the next Lodge Event.

Fellow Arrowmen, we have had a busy and successful spring. My reports are that elections are going well. Kawida Lodge has a great time at Conclave, Spring Fellowship was a good time for all, but a little cool. Most Chapter Advisers and Chapter Officers have been busy holding elections and sending Mike Warman the forms for recording. Aaron Shepherd, Lodge Chief, and your Lodge Adviser spent a Saturday at Somerset celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Scouting with a public exhibit of Scouting, campfire and Call Out for the Chapter. Fifteen Candidates were called out. The Section Conclave was well attended by the lodge. Last year s National Vice Chief, the 2010 National Chief, and Don Combs 2010 Southern Region Chief were all there. Kawida Lodge placed third among 10 lodges in the weekend events. Aaron Shepherd had a fantastic training schedule, Alex Hill was everywhere with his camera, we all had a great time. Alex Hill ran for Section Chief, but was defeated. Alex s efforts are deeply appreciated by the lodge. Aaron Shepherd was elected Section Secretary. Good job Aaron. Plenty of patches were traded and good memories were made. Plan now to attend the 2011 Conclave at Camp Crooked Creek near Louisville, Kentucky. The Spring Fellowship and Vigil was also a good event with a larger crowd than usual. Despite cool conditions spirits were high. It was also great to see Brotherhood Conversions at a fellowship event. Summer Camp is now near. There are plenty of leadership opportunities for lodge members at camp. Please be mindful the folks you come into contact with may be our next new member. Be helpful at all times. As I close I would like to thank all the youth and adults who make this a great Order of the Arrow Lodge, and a tip of my hat to all the youth who have learned and applied their knowledge on the section and national level. -- Alan Watts, Lodge Adviser est sed est.
