AWWA C504 Headloss This standard does not require a minimum waterway area nor does it limit head loss across the valve. If a maximum headloss is required, this information should be provided for each size and class of valve. The thickness of the valve disc shall not be more than 2.25 times the shaft diameter. Seat Location Introduction The AWWA Butterfly market is driven by competitive specifications. Even though all valves meet C504 (or claim to), manufacturers seek to specify features of their valves such as whether the seat is located on the body or the disc. Other features include flow-through discs, ductile iron construction, special coatings, etc. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 23
Seat-on-Body or Seat-on-Disc A debate started in the 1980 s when Pratt s marketing department distributed a white paper on the importance of their epoxy seat-on-body design. Pratt was able to get seat-on-body specified by some engineering firms despite the fact that AWWA C504 states that the seat can be located on the body or on the disc. The epoxy design was developed to lower manufacturing costs, not provide user benefits. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 24
Pratt & DeZurik s Argument Many water system accumulate a thick deposit of corrosive material or tubercles. A rubber seal on the disc will be damaged upon contact with the deposits. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 25
Counterpoints Tubercles do not accumulate on epoxy coated surfaces. All Val-Matic Butterfly Valves are provided standard with an interior coating of epoxy. Tubercles do not accumulate on Stainless Steel surfaces. The body seat ring is Type 316 Stainless Steel. The Type 316 Stainless Steel body seat ring is raised. Even if tubercles were to develop the raised seat design negates the potential for the resilient seat coming into contact with any buildup. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 26
Counterpoints The most common valve in the water market today is the resilient seat gate valve (RSGV) which has its seal on the gate. Like the RSGV, the VM Butterfly Valve is epoxy lined and not prone to corrosion deposits. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 27
American-BFV Seat-on-Body Pitfalls - Pratt & DeZurik The E-Lok designs require special epoxy injection systems to make adjustments and seat replacements. Field work is time consuming, expensive, and sensitive to temperature conditions. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 28
Seat-on-Disc Benefits Ease of Adjustment and Replacement Tri-Loc Retention System Many customers accept no equal 360 degree continuous seat (no molded hub seals or field splices) All sizes consistently designed Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 29
Conclusion The benefits of the Val-Matic Seat Design far outweigh any arguments that the seat-on-body manufacturers can muster. We have received dozens of favorable comments from water utilities and municipalities that they are pleased to see the American design available again. With our commitment to quality and customer service, there are no limits to the success we can have in the AWWA market. Copyright 2008 Val-Matic Valve & Mfg. Corp 30
