Bowler Descriptions How do you/we describe bowlers? Finish Timing LNR Rev rate, RPM Peak Back Swing Angle, PBA Spine Tilt Angle, STA Swing Shape Ratio, SSR Release Timing, BNA
What and Who is a Cranker? Robert Smith Sean Rash Jason Belmonte Michelle Feldman Brian Himmler Jason Couch Tommy Jones Wes Malott
What and Who is a Stroker? Carolyn Dorin-Ballard Jack Jurek Steve Jaros Walter Ray Williams Jr. Liz Johnson Tennelle Milligan
What and Who is a Tweener Chris Barnes Parker Bohn Mika Koivuniemi Kelly Kulick Bill O Neil Mike Fagan Pete Weber
Labeling a Bowler s Finish Timing L-N-R Leverage (Late) Neutral (Text Book) Roller (Early) USBC Coaching has created timing labels based on the placement of the bowling ball once the slide foot comes to a complete stop

Tommy Jones R 2 Finish Timing
Bill O Neil Neutral Finish Timing
Liz Johnson L 2 Finish Timing
Walter Ray Williams Jr. R 1 Finish Timing
Formula for RPM s Video cameras, 30 frames per second, 10 forward movements of the video, counting the total number of hours x 15 12 hours x 15 = 180 Rpms Bowlers Map is 60 frames per second 20 forward movements of the video, counting the total number of hours x 15 High Speed Video is 240 frames per second, counting 80 frames x the number of hours
USBC RPM Chart 180 Rpm s and below Low 12 hours x 15 = 180 180-360 Rpm s Medium 24 hours x 15 = 360 360-540 Rpm s High 36 hours x 15 = 540 540+ Head for the hills, or OMG!
Peak Backswing Angle PBA Is a measurement taken right before the ball starts to go into the downswing. The measurement is from the apex of the shoulder through the middle of the bowling ball Low, Medium, High and Extreme will be the generic classifications. At the higher coaching level the PBA will be measured in degrees
PBA Range Chart
Degree Chart
Fagan PBA= 154 Degrees High
Wes Malott PBA= 120 Medium
Tom Baker PBA = 86 Low
Allen PBA = 174 Extreme
Spine Tilt Angle The STA measurement can be taken throughout the approach For our discussion today we will be taking the STA from the same point that the PBA is measured. The line is drawn from the middle of the head through the ear to the hip. STA is split up into 4 categories, Low, Medium, High and Extreme. STA is also measured in degrees for exact data collection
Spine Tilt Angle by Range
STA by Degrees
Brad Angelo Medium STA 34 Degrees
Fagan High STA 65 Degrees
Osku Palermaa Extreme STA 85 Degrees
Swing Shape Ratio SSR is a tool that allows coaches to measure and classify a bowlers swing Steep, Rounded and Flat are the classifications for SSR SSR is measured from the middle of the ball before it begins into the downswing. This is compared to the length of the last step/slide to the foul line The lower the SSR # is the longer the slide is compared to the swing and therefore is a flatter swing. The higher the SSR # the steeper the swing is compared to the slide
Swing Shape Ratio Categories 0.60 and below equals a flatter swing 0.61 to.90 is rounded 0.91 and above is steep
Bob Learn Flat SSR 0.48
Kim Terrell-Kearney Rounded SSR 0.76
Tim Pfeifer Steep SSR 1.27
Rhino Page Steep SSR 0.99
Release Timing Measurement of when the fingers exit the bowling ball Before, Neutral, and After B, N and, A Releases are based off the ankle, in front would be After (A), at the ankle, Neutral (N), and before the ankle, (B) Before

What does this all mean? It gives coaches a description system that is based on science instead of what we think we see. The labels are not suppose to be a good or bad thing.
Kelly Kulick measurements L 1 Finish timing PBA is 139 degrees Medium STA is 38 degrees Medium SSR=.89 Rounded Release timing is A 2
