This year s Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic homecoming week was very well organized. Each day during the week of homecoming, a dress theme was assigned. Student Council came up with the themes for this year s homecoming week. The themes of the week were Hawaiian, superhero, college shirt, dress up, and tie dye day. Almost all of the students participated in the themes. Personally, I liked all of the themes, and I think many of the students did as well. With having to wear uniforms every day, having this option to dress down according to the theme was very nice. The week concluded with a pep-rally for the homecoming football game. The pep-rally consisted of a volleyball tournament. Students from each class gathered as a team and competed by class. In the first round of the tournament, the seniors won against the freshman and the juniors won against the sophomores, leaving the senior and junior class playing in the final round. In the end, the seniors beat the juniors. I personally, liked the tournament and think it was one of our best pep-rallies. This year s homecoming week was fun and a good way to lead up to the big homecoming game and dance! Hudson pictured with her parents the night of winning Homecoming Queen. LAS VEGAS By: Caitlin Cole On October 1 st, 2017, over 12,000 people went to see Jason Aldean and several other country artists at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Music lovers gathered at Las Vegas to enjoy the festival. Little did everyone know that their night would have a drastic turn. At 10:05-10:09 P.M. a gunman opened fire and a total of 400+ people were injured and 59 were killed. This shooting was a big surprise to everyone. It was named the largest mass shooting in American history. The shooter was closed in on by policed after he was shot in the leg. He eventually shot himself. The original number of deaths was over 40 but it has since increased. Shootings at music events are very scary because they are originally viewed as being enjoyable. It s sad and scary that know nowadays, people have to worry about going out in public. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the people hurt on October 1st and their families. HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME By: John Fukon Mars High School s Athletic Complex was the place to be last Friday night. The team faced Laurel High School and gave them the work. The boys won the game 48-14. The Trojan s victory is huge and sets them up for next week in a chance to win the section title. The team has been playing very well as of late and continues to work hard on the practice field. The Trojan Army supported a white out and was alive throughout the entire game. The students were extra excited since this game was Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic s Homecoming Game. There was a different energy and vibe in the stadium since it was the Homecoming Game. It definitely made the athletes want the win more than usual and added an extra sense of hype. The sense of energy and performance on the field led up to halftime, the big moment to find out who was the Homecoming Queen. At halftime, the girls who were on the Homecoming Court were announced and walked out onto the field. The crown from last year s winner, Kylie Huffman, was given to this year s winner Bridget Hudson. The entire event will be very memorable for Bridget, the members of the Homecoming Court, and for the student body for Homecoming is a special time. Many alumni were at the game to watch and support the Trojans as well as those on the Homecoming Court. After the Homecoming ceremony, the boys continued their dominance on Laurel and almost scored 50 points. The Trojans had an impressive showing and got the job done. After the game, the players and students were ready for the next day, the dance. After this great game, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic would first like to congratulate the football team on their victory but also to the entire Homecoming Court, especially Bridget Hudson for bringing home the crown. 2

NEW TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: INTERVIEWING MR. PALCSEY! By: Lauren Lucatorto Mr. Palcsey is a new staff member. He teaches Honors English 10, but he is also involved in other activities in the school. Mr. Palcsey earned his degrees in education at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. I have a Bachelor s degree in English, as well as two Master s degrees in curriculum and school administration, Palcsey said. He knew from early on that he wanted to be an English teacher. When asked about his childhood dream job, he said, When I was a kid I wanted to be a firefighter. That was my dream, but I knew I could be a volunteer, so I decided to pursue something else. When I was fifteen, I knew I wanted to be a high school English teacher. Palcsey is a strong believer in the Catholic faith. He explained what the importance of Catholic education is to him. The most important part of Catholic education is the opportunity for teachers to authentically witness faith and evangelize students while challenging them to use their God-given gifts to succeed academically. He further solidified this point when asked what was his best advice for high school students. My advice is to seek God first. All other things will fall into place as a result. When asked about his hobbies, Mr. Palcsey said, Firefighting is one. I also enjoy learning new things. When asked about the number one thing that everyone should know about him, Mr. Palcsey responded; I am happily married with two kids. 3

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH By: Ava Perock Periodically, Student Athlete of the Month, a part of the Sports Leader Program, is presented to exceptional individuals in the school s sports teams. Student athletes must be leaders to their team. The selection of the athletes starts with the coaches of the sports. All coaches are asked to submit two members of their team who they think are good leaders and followed the virtues. After all the nominees are in, there is a selection committee who looks over all the candidates and evaluate them based on how they are living out the virtues, their academics, and on their athletic achievements and goals. This month the two athletes that were chosen were Erin Porter and Joe Kearney. Based off of the five-individual s evaluation, they came to this conclusion because both of these athletes exhibited the qualities that the school looks for in student athletes. Their five evaluators described them saying, They have had great athletic success in their respective sports and are leaders on and off the field and court. The athletic director, Mr. Burrell, said, For Joe, it was his success on the field for our boys soccer team. To be leading soccer in WPIAL boys soccer is a great achievement that needed to be honored. Joe led the team to WPIALS while he scored 41 goals in the regular season. The athletic director also talked about Erin. He said For Erin, she is the captain of our girls volleyball team and her coach describes her as the epitome of a true leader. When you watch her play, you see her leadership both on and off the court. Congratulations to both Joe and Erin for being true leaders to their teams and all the hard work they ve put in! 4
