THE INSIDE PITCH WEEK 3 LEGENDS/VINTAGE /FOREVER YOUNG NOV. 7 th Baseball paths bring 60s mates together in SWF Bill Molnar & Dave Power, high schooler and his coach reunited through baseball in SW Florida. By Glenn Miller Roy Hobbs Baseball Dave Powers, 78, and Bill Molnar, 67, play for the South Florida Suns in the Vintage Division of the Roy Hobbs World Series. Things were different when they first connected on baseball fields half a century ago. Powers was the player/manager for the Norwalk, Conn., Blues of a local semi-pro league. Molnar was 16-year-old junior at Norwalk High School who pitched for the team. Then, as happens, each moved away from Connecticut. In 1970, Powers moved to Miami. In 1968, Molnar began a 4-year hitch in the Air Force. In 1987, Powers moved across the state to Port Charlotte, about 30 miles north of Fort Myers. Molnar moved to Naples, which is about 30 miles south of Fort Myers, about a dozen years later. I figured he was dead and gone, Molnar said of his old coach. They didn t know it for a while but both played in the same local Roy Hobbs League in Southwest Florida. Different ages, same sport. Powers described the league back home as a pretty fast semi-pro league. See BASEBALL PATHS, page 2 Baseball & Brews Tour The first annual Roy Hobbs Baseball & Brews brewery tour will be held Wednesday and Friday nights this week during the Veterans Division play. The tours will run from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. from the Player Development Complex parking lot. Cost is $45 per person, and Southwest Florida Brewery Tours will take 14 customers to 3 breweries for flights and samples of their beers. Meg Giffen photo. RHWS building its video programing at PDC, sites Programming for the flat screen television units on wheels at the Roy Hobbs World Series is growing. Right now, the units are at the Player Development Complex; however, we hope to be adding them to the other complexes where we have a strong enough WiFi signal to operate them. Mac Chambers and Terry Lockhart have been working on this project for Roy Hobbs, the goal being to have video feeds alive at the PDC, Centurylink, JetBlue and Terry Park playing sites, with results, schedules, standings, brackets, videos, RHWS information and sponsorships. The crucial issue right now in the development of this project is WiFi access and bandwidth at each of the sites. Some See VIDEO, page 2 The tours are limited to 14 people; however if 19 or more sign up 24 hours in advance, SWF Brewery Tours will add a second van. Seats will not be sold at the time of the tour all reservations must be made in advance. See Karen Marcinkoski at Roy Hobbs Headquarters or sign up on-line at www.royhobbs.com/world-series.
2 BASEBALL PATHS From page 1 Molnar was 16 pitching against grown men. He threw as hard as a man, Powers said Sunday morning at the CenturyLink Sports Complex before the Suns played the Boston Braves. He had a good fastball. Molnar recalls he had been living in Naples about 2 years and was warming up before a game when they discovered each other again. All of a sudden I hear this breathing in my ear, Molnar said. It was me, Powers said. It was a stunner. I ll be damned, Molnar said. It s Dave Powers from Connecticut. Powers wasn t dead, obviously. And he thought I was dead, Molnar said. Both are still obviously alive and still playing baseball. What are the odds of that happening? Powers said of meeting again. In the 1960s, when they were on the Blues, Molnar was a kid and Powers was an adult. Did he address him as Mr. Powers? I called him anything he wanted me to call him, Molnar said. Powers recalls what Molnar was like as a kid. Baseball, he put his heart and soul into it, Powers said. Now, Molnar plays for Powers in a Punta Gorda league that is a 68-mile, one-way drive from his Naples home. For him I d crawl, Molnar said. VIDEO From page 1 are better than others. In the meantime, Roy Hobbs experimented with some videotaping Sunday of games at PDC and created a series of vignettes of games and players, which will be carried on the flat screens on Monday. More video work will be done by David Robertson on Monday to add to the library we have. The broadcasts include this Inside Pitch, scores and schedules, the vignettes of current action, the updated Roy Hobbs promotional video and other videos from the world of baseball. We hope you enjoy it. 2016 Roy Hobbs Cups Roy Hobbs is deeply apologetic over the missing Roy Hobbs souvenir cups this week. A new supply should arrive by Friday, hopefully sooner, but we will know more on Monday. Roy Hobbs is giving out older versions of our cups, which players may keep. When the 2016 version arrives, we will have those available for players who did not get the correct cup.

8 NOTEBOOK From page 7 lot security will continue as parking lot theft issues have knock on wood not been an issue the last 6 years. Are we out of the woods? No, it is a daily procedure and effort to make sure parking lots are safe. You can help by not leaving valuables exposed in your vehicles. Once again, Roy Hobbs will have personnel posted at the player/spectators entrances to Terry Park, PDC, JetBlue Complex and at the entrance to the Quad fields at Lee County. These individuals will have a view of the parking lot, and they will be available in emergencies, be enforcing cooler guidelines and handling admissions. First Aid Two key First Aid items: Drink plenty of fluids while playing; don t just wait until the game is over. Water will be available at the fields. Second, be sure to stretch and loosen up before playing, or even re-entering a game. In case of an emergency, contact the field manager at your site. He has the First Aid supplies and will contact 911 services as needed. Ice is available for injuries check with the field manager on duty or go to the nearest concession stand to have the appropriate personnel paged. Roy Hobbs requests that managers plan for pitchers needing ice for their arms and to supply it. Playoff pitching guidelines For the record, here is a recap on the rules on pitching eligibility for the playoffs. Roy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8th and 9th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings 6 outs or 10 hitters during pool play. AAAA qualifier teams may not add pitchers to their lineup on Thursday; however, Open Division teams may have pitchers arrive Thursday those pitchers much throw 5 innings or 25 hitters to qualify for the playoffs. Finally, in the playoffs, those non-qualified middle-inning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive positions where they started the game. That is as important as the spirit of the rule that these non-qualified pitchers who are used as inning-eaters are players who ordinarily are playing other positions. And, please remember that any players leaving the RHWS today (Monday) to return on Thursday MUST turn in their player ID Card and re-register upon their return. They must return before the quarterfinals of the playoffs, regardless of division. Managers should email a list of their qualified pitchers to Roy Hobbs in case of rg@royhobbs.com by 7 p.m. the night before their playoffs begin.
