FSU started each of its 11 possession with an averaging field position of its own 43-yard line, while the Warhawks started their possession on their own 16. ULM held FSU to just 92 yards on the ground, but the Seminoles were finally able to break through for 280 yards through the air. The game was 10-0 late in the second quarter. ULM dominated Grambling State in all phases of the game and rolled to a 35-7 victory. The Warhawks outgained the Tigers 452-144 on the night including a 247 to 26 margin on the ground. Five different Warhawks scored a touchdown with three coming on the ground and two through the air. Centarius Donald rushed for 144 yards to become the first ULM player to top the 100-yard mark in over a year. Troy Evans had five TFL, just a half TFL shy of the school record. TCU led 21-17 at the half, but broke the game open with a kickoff return for a TD to open the second half and then a quick TD following a ULM fumble. Brent Leonard hauled in 13 receptions for the Warhawks -- the second most in ULM history and third most in the NCAA this season -- while Tavarese Maye had four catches for 72 yards and a score. Iowa jumped out to a 28-3 halftime lead en route to the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Warhawks put a pair of touchdowns on the board in the third quarter on runs by quarterback Kolton Browning and wide receiver Tavarese Maye. Backup QB Cody Wells finished the game 13-of-17 for 162 yards. The Warhawks open Sun Belt Conference play following a bye week for the third time in the past six seasons and with Arkansas State for the second straight season. The matchup between ULM and ASU has turned into a nice rivalry with the teams splitting each of the past six meetings and the home team winning each contest. The Red Wolves last victory over the Warhawks in Malone Stadium came in 2004, while ULM s last victory at Arkansas State was in 2001. ULM will be looking to do something that it has never done before -- win a game in Troy, Ala. The Warhawks, who have beaten the Trojans in two of the past three seasons, are 0-6 all-time in Troy despite some close contests. Last year, ULM held Troy to 285 yards of total offense, its lowest offensive output since Florida held it to 139 yards in the second game of 2009. It was the Trojans lowest offensive output in an SBC game since Oct. 2006 against North Texas (243 yards). The Warhawks will look to keep its recent momentum against the Mean Green rolling when they visit UNT s brand new stadium. ULM has won three straight, 5-of-6 and 11-of-15 against North Texas. Kolton Browning tied a ULM single-game record with five touchdown passes as the Warhawks defeated the Mean Green 49-37 last season in Malone Stadium. The Warhawks have won two of their last three games in Denton, including a 33-6 victory in 2009. The Warhawks rallied from down 24-7 entering the fourth quarter to defeat the Hilltoppers 35-30 last season in Bowling Green. ULM has now won three straight games in the series that dates back to 1952; the two teams met three times during the initial series before reuniting as conference foes in 2009. The Warhawks defeated the Hilltoppers 21-18 in 2009 in the first meeting between the two clubs as Sun Belt Conference opponents. ULM will be looking to exact some revenge when it travels south to take on UL-Lafayette. The Warhawks have dropped three straight to their in-state rival after winning 5-of-6 from the Ragin Cajuns. ULL also stole ULM s opportunity at a bowl bid last season as they blocked a game-tying extra-point attempt in the final minutes of the season finale. The all-time series, which dates back to 1951, is deadlocked at 23 each. The Warhawks have won three of the last four games in Lafayette. Middle Tennessee has had ULM s number. The Blue Raiders have won nine of the 11 meetings in the all-time series and have won five straight. The Warhawks have had their chances in the series and three of the past six games have been decided by three points (34-31, 2005; 43-40, 2007; 24-21, 2008). If preseason predictions come true, when FIU visits Malone Stadium at the end of November there could be a lot on the line. The Warhawks have won five of the seven alltime meetings in the series with the Panthers, but dropped a tough double-overtime contest last season in Miami. ULM has scored at least 28 points in all seven meetings against FIU and the Warhawks are averaging 33.4 points in those seven games. ULM and the state of Florida have got along very well since the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt in 2001. ULM is 6-1 in Sun Belt Conference games played in the Sunshine State -- 4-0 at Florida Atlantic and 2-1 at FIU. The Warhawks lead the all-time series against the Owls 5-2 with the two losses coming by a combined three points. The series has been extremely close since the beginning -- all seven games have been decided by a combined 22 points or 3.1 points per game.

The Series ULM and Arkansas State will meet for the 33rd time on Saturday with the Red Wolves holding a slight 18-14 advantage in the all-time series. Neither team has put together more than one win in the series since ASU won three straight from 2002-05; prior to that, the last win streak was a ULM three-game run from 1987-89. The home team has won the last six meetings. Defending Malone ULM has defended its home turf as well as anybody in the state of Louisiana and the Sun Belt Conference. Over the past five seasons, ULM s home winning percentage is second best in Louisiana and third best in the Sun Belt. Louisiana FBS Schools Since 2007: 1. LSU... 27-5 (.844) 2. ULM... 15-6 (.714) 3. More on ULM s Youth The ULM roster features 60 freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores. The team features 15 juniors and 19 seniors. Freshmen and sophomores occupy nine of the 22 starting positions on offense and defense. Even More on ULM s Youth Six true freshmen saw the field against Florida State with four filling starting roles. Offensive linemen Ben Risenhoover & Joseph Treadwell, punt returner Tyler Cain (also played WR) and place kicker Justin Manton all started, while defensive end Joey Gautney and safety Cordero Smith also saw action. Fifteen sophomores and 13 freshmen saw the field against Florida State. The Warhawks closest upset bid against a ranked foe came at No. 22 Auburn in a 28-24 loss in 1996. Team Notes The Warhawks have played nine ranked teams over the past five seasons. In 2007, ULM played No. 25 Clemson and No. 15 Texas A&M in back-to-back weeks. In 2008, the Warhawks opened the season at No. 10 Auburn. ULM opened the 2009 season at No. 2 Texas and opened the 2010 season against No. 14 Arkansas. The Warhawks also played at No. 10 Auburn and at No. 5 LSU last season. So far this year, ULM has played No. 5 Florida State and No. 23 TCU. The Warhawks have played the No. 2 team in the country twice -- Florida in 2001 and Texas in 2009. The Warhawks have opened the season six times against a ranked foe: 1994 at #8 Colorado (L, 13-48), 2003 at #13 LSU (L, 7-49), 2004 at #17 Auburn (L, 0-31), 2008 at #10 Auburn (L, 0-34), 2009 at #2 Texas (L, 20-59), 2010 vs. #14 Arkansas (L, 7-31), 2011 vs. #5 Florida State (L, 0-34). Grieco Named Nation s Top Strength Coach ULM strength and conditioning head coach John Grieco was named the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society Collegiate Coach of the Year for 2009. Grieco joined the ULM staff in January 2010 after four seasons as the director of strength and conditioning at UNLV. He has also worked at East Carolina and Florida. What s in a Name? There is something missing from the Warhawks uniforms this season as the players last names have been removed from the back of the jerseys for the third straight season. The coaching staff has told the players the names will be returned to the jerseys upon receiving a bowl game invitation. Warhawk Captains Each week the Warhawks select team captains from the offense, defense and special teams. At the end of the season, the team will select its permanent team captains. 2010 Permanent Captains: QB Kolton Browning, RB/KR Jyruss Edwards, RB Rodney Lovett, DE Ken Dorsey 2011 Game-by-Game Captains: (Off., Def., ST) Florida State: QB Kolton Browning, DE Ken Dorsey, KR Jyruss Edwards Grambling State: OL Ryan McCaul, CB Tim Taylor, S Darius Prelow TCU: OL Anthony Montgomery, DE Troy Evans, RB Centarius Donald Iowa: WR Brent Leonard, S Nate Brown, P Aaron Munoz Arkansas State: WR Anthony McCall, LB Jason Edwards, LB C.C. The Warhawks began playing in 1931 as a junior college and won the first of the school s two national championships with an 8-0 record in 1935. ULM became a senior college in 1951 and joined the NAIA where it stayed until 1975 when the Warhawks became a Division I independent. The Warhawks joined Division I-AA in 1982 and won the school s second national championship in 1987, going 13-2. ULM made the final step to college football s top stage in 1994 as a I-A independent and then joined the Sun Belt in 2001.

The streak appears to be over unless the Warhawks meet up with an SEC team in a bowl game. ULM played two SEC games 11 times during the streak and three SEC teams six times (1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2010). Team Tabby ULM s beat writer from the Monroe News Star Tabby Soignier was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer at the age of 27. Members of the ULM Athletic Training staff will be wearing Team Tabby bracelets during the season. Dedicated to legendary football head coach James L. Malone (1934-52) on Sept. 27, 1980, Malone Stadium has seen ULM teams post a combined 109-55-1 (.664) record. The grounds of Malone Stadium have been the home to ULM s National Championship team in 1987, four Southland Conference Championships, and most recently a Sun Belt Conference Championship in 2005. ULM picked up victories in their home opener in 23 of the first 24 seasons at Malone Stadium. State-Of-The-Art Playing Surface One of the latest additions to Malone Stadium features a ProPlay monofiliment fiber grass with a shock and drain pad and Envirofill clear coated sand infill. In addition to looking more like natural grass, ULM s new playing surface has measures in place to help prevent injuries and drain water at a rate of 10 inches per hour. The clear-coated sand used has obvious benefits over its predecessor (ground-up black rubber) in that it does not absorb as much heat, does not compact over time, and does not migrate during use. The first game played on the new surface was the 2007 season opener against Tulsa on ESPN2HD. Controlling the Football ULM finished the 2010 season 15th in the NCAA averaging 32:08 in time of possession. The Warhawks had the second highest time of possession average at home, 34:56, trailing only Northern Illinois 36:29. The Warhawks currently rank 33rd in the NCAA with 31:32 of possession time this season. ULM dominated the TOP against Grambling State 34:56-25:04. Streaking Warhawks Here are some team and individual streaks to take a look at: ULM has forced a turnover in 25 of the last 28 games ULM had a sack in 24 straight games until the 2010 season finale against UL-Lafayette; now 27-of-29 games Luther Ambrose had at least one reception in 14 straight games until the opener at Florida State; he has a catch in 25 of the past 28 games Brent Leonard has at least one catch in 16 straight games Tavarese Maye has at least one catch in all 16 games of his ULM career Kolton Browning tied the ULM school record with at least 200 yards passing in eight straight games last season Troy Evans has at least one tackle in 19 straight games and in 23 of 24 games Darius Prelow has a tackle in 31 straight games and in 32-of-33 career games played Staff Sticking Together Head coach Todd Berry had to replace just one assistant coach (either full time or graduate assistant) during the offseason. Cornerbacks coach Brandon Shelby left ULM to take a position at Indiana and Berry replaced him with Tony Gilbert from Arkansas State.

Defensive tackles coach Leon Lett did not return to the program just prior to fall camp, but was not replaced on the coaching staff. Everett Todd resumed his role as the defensive line coach after coaching just the ends in 2010. Only 28 FBS schools made one or no changes to the coaching staff. Thirteen schools did not make any changes and 15 schools made just one change. Familiar Faces The Warhawks return 19 starters on offense and defense from 2010 and return all four specialists. Nine players had started at least 15 games in their career while nine different players carried a streak of at least 12 straight games started into the opener. Heading into the season, the ULM roster featured 29 players that have started at least one game (17 on offense and 12 on defense). Last year, the Warhawks had just 18 players with a collegiate start under their belt heading into the opener (11 on offense, 7 on defense). The Warhawks offensive line entered the season with a combined 94 games started in their career. Offense Notes The Wiz! Often confused for Harry Potter, junior wide receiver Brent Leonard is a wizard on the football field. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound former walk-on caught 13 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown at TCU. The 13 catches are the second most in ULM history, seventh most in the NCAA this season and eighth most in Sun Belt Conference history. He followed that up with eight catches for 74 yards at Iowa. ULM Single-Game Receptions: 1. Jackie Harris 16-155 Lamar 1988 2. Brent Leonard 13-92 TCU 2011 3. Chris Jones 12-214 Northwestern State 1981 Stepfret Williams 12-167 Mississippi State 1995 5. He finished the season with 33 catches for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Overall, 21 of his 33 catches went for first downs. This season, eight of his 23 catches have gone for first downs and he has one catch for a touchdown/first down (TCU) on fourth down. Protecting the Football Despite playing against teams know for their ability to take away the football, ULM has done an outstanding job protecting the ball this season. The Warhawks have turned the ball over just five times through the first four games of the season. The Warhawks have thrown a pair of interceptions and lost three fumbles (only two on offense; other came on a punt return). NCAA Turnover Leaders: 1. Stanford... 1 2. Northwestern... 2 3. As a team, the Warhawks rank 33rd in the NCAA with a 46.2 conversion rate on third down. ULM has converted the 34th most third downs in the NCAA this season (30); however all but six of the schools in front of the Warhawks have played five games. Big Play Threat Sophomore wide receiver Tavarese Maye was one of the top big-play threats in the Sun Belt Conference in his first season. Maye scored four touchdowns last season (three receiving and one rushing) with three coming from at least 43 yards out. Maye s touchdowns came from an average of 41.0 yards out. He also had an 82-yard reception to his credit -- the sixth longest in ULM history. Already this season Maye has five catches of 20 yards or more (ULM has eight total), four catches of 25 or more yards and five catches of 15 or more yards. He ranks 35th nationally in 25+ yard receptions despite playing in one fewer game than most of the country. Against Grambling State, Maye had catches of 42, 26 and 22 yards. On one drive in the third quarter, he had a catch for a first down on three straight third down plays. Maye finished the game with eight catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Over his past three contests, Maye has 19 catches for 250 yards. Big Chunks of Yardage Centarius Donald enters the week 25th in the NCAA averaging 6.5 yards per carry (30 attempts min.). The sophomore back has rushed for 209 yards on 32 carries. Donald has not been tackled for a loss this season. Quick Start ULM scored on its first three possessions of the game at TCU with a field goal and a pair of touchdowns. It marked the first time ULM scored on its opening three possessions of a game since Sept. 26, 2009, against Florida Atlantic; ULM also scored a field goal and two touchdowns in that game -- it was a span of 22 games between the two occurrences. Long Drives The Warhawks had 20 drives last season that were 10 plays or longer and 10 that were 14 plays or longer. Already this season the Warhawks have put together 11 drives of 10 or more plays. Warhawks to use New Football The Warhawks switched to a new football this season thanks to a request from the quarterbacks. ULM will be using the Wilson 1003 GST this year after using the Wilson 1005 for several years. The new ball is the only football to offer patented laid in stripes and ACL composite leather laces combined with exclusive Wilson GST leather.

Kolton Browning Sophomore Quarterback Centarius Tops the Century Mark Sophomore running back Centarius Donald rushed for 144 yards on just 12 carries (12.0 YPC) in ULM s victory over Grambling State. His 144 yards were the 20th most in the NCAA this season to date. It was ULM s first 100-yard rushing performance since the 2009 season finale against ULL when Frank Goodin hit triple digits. Donald s big run was a 55-yard blast up the middle for a score on a 3rd-and-20 play. The run was the 30th longest in the NCAA at the time. Almost Had Two! Jyruss Edwards finished the Grambling State game with 90 yards on 22 carries to almost join Centarius Donald (12-144) over the 100-yard mark. It would have been the first time that two ULM players had rushed for over 100 yards in the same game since Frank Goodin (105) and Isaiah Newsome (158) both topped the century mark against Texas Southern on Sept. 12, 2009. Getting It Done on the Ground ULM rushed for 247 yards against Grambling State -- its most under Todd Berry. Centarius Donald (144) and Jyruss Edwards (90) did most of the damage, while Monterrell Washington and Mitchell Bailey also picked up positive yards. The Warhawks were shutout 34-0 in the 2008 season opener at No. 10 Auburn snapping a streak of 32 straight games of recording at least one score. A 59-0 loss to Ole Miss later in the season marked the first time that ULM had been shutout multiple times in the same season since 2000 -- Memphis (28-0), Middle Tennessee (38-0) and Central Florida (55-0). Faster Start ULM struggled to score points in the first quarter last year. Through the first seven games, ULM scored just six points -- field goals at Auburn and Middle Tennessee. Something clicked over the final four SBC games as ULM scored 41 points in the first quarter and became the first team to score a first quarter touchdown against FIU (game nine). ULM has scored 34 points in the first quarter this season -- the most of any quarter. However, ULM has scored just 21 second-half points this season. Entering the Iowa game, ULM had scored just once in the second half all season long; the Warhawks put up a pair of third quarter touchdowns against the Hawkeyes. Defense Notes Turnovers & Sacks In 28 games running the 3-3-5 scheme, the ULM defense has forced 48 turnovers, recorded 61 sacks and totaled 156 tackles for loss. The big night propelled the Warhawks to the top of the national rankings -- ULM enters the week tied for 31st in the NCAA averaging 2.5 sacks per game. Prelow with a Pick(s) Hawk Darius Prelow intercepted his third career pass in the opener at Florida State. The pick followed a 30-yard punt return that gave the Seminoles the ball deep in Warhawk territory. Prelow also recorded his second career sack in the contest and finished with four tackles. He followed that up with his second interception of the season the next game. Prelow is tied for 22nd in the NCAA entering the week with his two interceptions. More on Turnovers The Warhawks have forced at least one turnover in 25 of 28 games under defensive coordinator Troy Reffett and intercepted a pass in 19-of-28 games. The Warhawks have intercepted a pass in 13 of the past 17 games. Limiting the Big Play A lot of ULM s success on defense can be attributed to limiting the big play. The Warhawks rank 15th in NCAA with just two rushes of 20 yards or more against them this season. ULM ranks 39th in the NCAA with 18 rushes of 10-yards or more allowed this season. Finally, the Warhawks rank 34th in the NCAA with just 30 rushing first downs allowed this season. What an Improvement In the first season running the 3-3-5 defense under new coordinator Troy Reffett, the Warhawks put together the second best turnaround in the NCAA as a unit. After allowing 444.7 yards of total offense a game in 2008, the Warhawks held opponents to just 347.0 yards last season -- an improvement of 97.7 yards per game. Nowhere to Run ULM held six teams to under 100 yards rushing in 2009 and held nine teams under its season rushing total. Last season, ULM held seven of its 12 opponents under its season average for rushing and three teams to under 100 yards rushing. The season 2011 got off under the right foot as the Warhawks held Florida State to just 92 rushing yards and Grambling State to only 26 yards on the ground. Under DC Troy Reffett, ULM has held 11 of 28 opponents under 100 yards rushing and 17 of 28 opponents under its season average. More About Stopping the Run The Warhawks allowed teams to rush for just 110.1 yards per game in 2009 in Troy Reffett s first season as defensive coordinator and allowed just two players to rush for over 100 yards. ULM ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference and 20th in the NCAA in defending the run. The Warhawks allowed four 100-yard rushers last year and led the Sun Belt in rush defense for the second straight season. Through the opening three weeks of play in 2011, ULM is second in the Sun Belt and ranks 45th in the NCAA and has allowed just one 100-yard rusher (Marcus Coker, Iowa) KT with the TFL Sophomore nose tackle Kentarius Caldwell turned in a pair of tackle for losses in addition to a sack and four tackles in the opener at Florida State. In limited action last season, he had six tackles and a half tackle for loss. D Holds Seminoles in Check The ULM defense did as much as they could against the No. 5 Seminoles in the season opener. The Warhawks held FSU to just 92 rushing yards for the game and to just 45 total yards through the first quarter. However, a short field (FSU average starting position was its own 43-yard line) eventually proved to be too much. Chain Locked Grambling State didn t have much luck moving the chains against the ULM defense. The Warhawks held the Tigers to just four first downs in the game and just one in the second half. The four first downs allowed is just one shy of the school record set against Jacksonville State in 1960. The Big Goose Egg The shutout pitched by the ULM defense against Texas Southern in 2009 was the first by ULM since Nov. 11, 2006, against FIU. It was just the second shutout since Nov. 6, 1999, and the 14th of the NCAA era (1975-pr.) Quick Start D The Warhawks forced Florida State into a three-andout on its first two possessions of the season opener. It appeared that the ULM D was going to hold FSU to just 10 points in the first half, but a late Warhawk turnover and then a 50-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-9 put the Seminoles up 17-0. The Tool Man Tim Taylor made the switch from offense to defense during the spring and had quite a debut. The converted wide receiver (who played cornerback in high school) came off the ULM bench to record a gamehigh nine tackles in addition to a tackle for loss. Taylor was named team captain and a starter for the Grambling game following his opening day effort. Shut Down on Fourth Down The Warhawks ranked 30th in the NCAA in 2010 holding opponents to a 43.8 conversion rate (7-for-16) on fourth down. ULM s odd-man front is different than most odd-man fronts as the tackle is not designed to clog gaps and take out multiple linemen. Instead, ULM s nose tackles are tasked to get in the backfield and therefore must be smaller and faster. Dorsey on the Move Senior Ken Dorsey was forced to evacuate his home not once, but twice due to hurricanes. He was first forced out of his New Orleans home by Hurricane Katrina. His family was staying in Lake Charles, La., when, not even a month later, Hurricane Rita blew threw Louisiana and forced the Dorseys to move once again. Ken and his father loaded up the car and drove until they found a hotel with a vacancy. That happened to be in Homewood, Ala., (suburb of Birmingham) where Ken and his dad watched the Homewood Patriots pound Shades Valley 40-2 on local television. Ken turned to his dad and said this is where I want to go to school. His moving was not limited to off the football field, during fall camp last season he was moved from linebacker to defensive end. The moved proved to be a successful one as Dorsey earned All-Sun Belt and All-Louisiana honors in his first season at defensive end. Welcome Back Troy Troy Evans missed eight games last season and saw limited time in the final four games of the year. The All-Sun Belt defensive end announced his return with a monster game against Grambling State. Evans finished the game with six tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. His 4.5 tackles for loss were just one TFL shy of the school record of 5.5 set by Steve Foley in 1997. Evans was named the Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. No Quarterback is Safe The Warhawks tallied 27 sacks in 2009, more than doubling their total from the previous year, and finished the 2010 season with 24. True freshman Justin Manton handled the kicking duties in place of injured Radi Jabour, while another true freshman Tyler Cain returned punts. Aaron Munoz and Conner Fryoux split the punting duties. Munoz Impresses in Debut When Aaron Munoz stepped on the field as ULM s starting punter against Arkansas last season it marked the first time he had punted in a game since he was in eighth grade -- he boomed his first kick 60 yards and finished the game with a 41.6 yards-per-punt average over nine kicks. Freshmen Kickers are Sparse ULM true freshman place kicker Justin Manton is one of just eight freshman place kickers in the NCAA to earn a starting nod and one of just six true freshmen. The walk-on boomed two punts for a 43.5 average. Fryoux was consistent with one going 44 yards and the other 43. He followed that performance with punts of 47 and 45 yards against Grambling State and 48 yards at TCU -- he would rank 21st in the NCAA (44.1) if he met the minimum kick requirement. Block That Kick The Warhawks blocked their first punt since 2008 in the game against Grambling State. The block, which was by Tim Taylor, led to a ULM touchdown.

ULM Head Coach Todd Berry (35-70; 10th Overall Season / 6-10; 2nd Season at ULM) After bringing ULM to the verge of the program s first bowl appearance in school history with one of the youngest teams in the country, Todd Berry begins his second season as the head coach of the Warhawk football team. Berry, who is highly regarded as an offensive mastermind, returned to ULM as the program s 14th head coach after serving as the offensive coordinator for two seasons. In his first season in charge of the program, Berry led a team that saw 17 freshmen and sophomores start games and featured 23 freshmen and sophomores on the offensive and defensive depth chart. Berry s Warhawks faced one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation; ULM faced Auburn (BCS National Champion), Arkansas (Sugar Bowl) and LSU (Cotton Bowl). One of nine head coaches in the NCAA to also coach an individual position, Berry made the difficult decision to give the reigns of the offense to redshirt freshman Kolton Browning. The decision paid off. Under Berry s guidance, Browning was named the Louisiana Freshman of the Year in addition to earning Freshman All-America honors from College Football News. Browning finished third in the NCAA among all freshmen after averaging 247.4 yards of total offense per game in addition to tying the ULM records for touchdown passes in a game (5) and consecutive 200-yard passing games (8). Browning led the Sun Belt with a 61.9 completion percentage and tallied the second most yards of total offense in ULM history (2,937). Defensive end Ken Dorsey, safety Darius Prelow, wide receiver Luther Ambrose, linebacker Cameron Blakes and Browning were all named All-Sun Belt in Berry s first season. Berry s first season at the helm of the Warhawks included a 28-14 victory over Troy. The Warhawks held the Trojans to their lowest offensive output in a Sun Belt game since 2006 as they snapped the Trojans 13-game Sun Belt win streak. He was reappointed to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees in 2010. The Board, which consists of 18 head coaches, formulates policy and provides direction for the organization, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 11,000 members from all levels of the profession. Berry, a 28-year coaching veteran, was ULM s offensive coordinator from 2004-05, where he helped guide the Warhawks to the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Championship and quarterback Steven Jyles to Sun Belt Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year honors. Todd Berry is the right man at the right time for ULM, ULM Director of Athletics Bobby Staub said at Berry s introductory press conference in December 2009. He s here to build a winning program both on and off the field and with the support of the entire Warhawk family, I m quite confident he ll be successful in doing just that. Berry has diligently displayed a championship mentality and approach he has infused into his players, staff, administrators and supporters, all with an eye for competing for a Sun Belt Conference championship as soon as possible. In fact it was that same mentality that Berry used to resurrect Illinois State s football program. The day he was named the Redbirds head football coach in 1996, he began talking about ISU teams playing for national championships. This for an institution that had experienced little success on the gridiron and had been on the verge of dropping the sport due to its checkered past. Just four years later, Berry had completed one of the most amazing turnarounds in Division I-AA history, guiding his revamped Illinois State program all the way to the national semifinals in 1999. During a three-year tenure as the offensive coordinator at UNLV, Berry developed the top quarterback duo in the Mountain West Conference with record-setters Omar Clayton and Mike Clausen. The pair combined to throw for 2,693 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2009. Clayton is UNLV s career leader in completion percentage and is the only player in Rebel history to have thrown for over 300 yards and rushed for over 100 yards in a game. Clausen set a UNLV freshman record with 119 consecutive pass attempts without an interception in 2008 - a mark that fell just 19 attempts short of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision record. Clayton threw 18 touchdown passes in 2008 - the fourth most in UNLV history and most since 1996 - and set the UNLV school record by attempting 173 passes without an interception. The duo combined for just six interceptions during the 2008 season to tie the school record. Despite coaching in Nevada, Berry continued to recruit two areas that ULM relies heavily on every year - Florida and Texas. ULM had 27 players on its roster this past season from those two states. Berry vs All Opponents (at ULM) Todd Berry was introduced as ULM s 14th head coach on December 16, 2009 Berry split his stints at ULM and UNLV with one season as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Miami in 2006. His first stop in Monroe followed a four-year run, 2000-03, as the head coach at Army. Berry s teams set 25 Academy records during his tenure and he is the last Army coach to defeat Navy (26-17, 2001). He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association from 2001-03. His tenure at Army followed a four-year stint at Illinois State (1996-99) where Berry presided over one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) history. The team had not won a conference title since 1950, but under Berry the Redbirds advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs in his third season and finished in FCS top 20. The following year, ISU became just the third team to run through its Gateway Conference schedule unblemished and advanced to the FCS semifinals. Berry was a semifinalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award in both 1998 and 1999. Under Berry s direction, Illinois State established or equaled 100 individual and team records on a game, season, and career levels. The Redbirds were listed in the top 25 ranking for 19 consecutive weeks. In addition his players captured 73 postseason awards including four Academic All-America citations and six All-America certificates. He was a finalist for the 1998 Eddie Robinson Award, presented annually to the top collegiate head coach at the Division I-AA level, each of his last two years. In addition, he A was a two-time Gateway Conference Coach of the Year honoree and the 1999 GTE Region 4 Coach of the Year. Before arriving at ISU, Berry spent four seasons as offensive coordinator at East Carolina University under head coach Steve Logan. He played a vital role on the Pirate teams that reached the Liberty Bowl in 1994 and 1995. I want to be aggressive in all facets of the game Berry has said in the past. I know that you win with defense first and I appreciate that. Most of my background is on offense, but to be an effective offensive coordinator you have to understand defense. A 1983 graduate of the University of Tulsa, Berry has worked for some well-known head coaches during his accent, holding down assistant positions on the staffs of Logan at East Carolina, John Cooper at the University of Tulsa, and Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee. While in high school, Berry was an all-state selection at football (quarterback) and track and field at Miami (Okla.) High School. At Tulsa, he played quarterback for the Golden Hurricane from 1979 to 1981 before suffering a career-ending knee injury. Coming out of high school, football was significant to me, but I also wanted to attend a school that possessed a good mix of academics-that was the reason I was going to college, first and foremost. I turned down some more traditional Top 10 football programs in order to attend a school with a nice blend of academics and athletics. Berry began his coaching career as an undergraduate at Tulsa with Cooper before moving to Tennessee as a graduate assistant and tight ends coach in 1983 when the Volunteers advanced to the Florida Citrus Bowl at years end. Following a one-year return to his alma mater as receivers coach in 1984, Berry headed to Oklahoma State University in 1985, where he worked with the likes of future National Football League standout Thurman Thomas. He then served a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee-Martin, holding that position from 1986 through 1988. While at UT-Martin, Berry coached the Pacers to a top-five finish in Division II passing offense, total offense, and scoring offense. In his final season, all four receivers, the running back and quarterback signed professional contracts. He also enjoyed a two-year tour at Mississippi State University, coaching wide receivers, and one campaign with at Southeast Missouri State University, as offensive coordinator, before joining Logan s staff at ECU. Berry is the son of the late Rueben Berry, a former Canadian Football League head coach and longtime mentor Saskatchewan Rough Riders. Is married to the former Lisa Grimes. The couple has two daughters, Jordan (24) and Ryleigh (9). Game 1 ULM 0 #5 Florida State 34 Sept. 3, 2011 Doak Campbell Stadium (72,226) Tallahassee, Fla. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The ULM defense held the nation s fifth-ranked team for as long as it could, but field position and time of possession proved to be too much as the Seminoles handed the Warhawks a 34-0 loss in the season opener for both clubs Saturday at Doak-Campbell Stadium. Florida State (1-0) had just 45 yards of offense and six rushing yards in the opening quarter of play and went into the halftime break with just 52 yards on the ground. Florida State started three of its first five drives in ULM territory and another on its own 47-yard line, while ULM started inside its own 20-yard line on five of its first eight drives. For the game, Florida State s average starting field position was its own 43-yard line while ULM s averaging starting field position was its own 16-yard line. The Seminoles finished the game with 372 yards against a Warhawk defense that was on the field for over 30 minutes. ULM, who has led the Sun Belt in rushing each of the past two seasons, held Florida State to just 92 yards on the ground. The Seminoles opened the scoring late in the first quarter on a 9-yard pass from EJ Manuel to Bert Reed on a third-and-goal. Kentarius Caldwell forced the third-and-long with his first career sack one play earlier and the Warhawks chased Manuel out of the pocket on the touchdown throw. Manuel finished the game 22-of-34 for 252 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception; he also rushed for 22 yards on eight carries. Rodney Smith had six receptions for 78 yards while Jarred Haggins had five catches for 28 yards. Florida State s much heralded defense held ULM to just 191 yards in the game with 99 coming on the ground. Kolton Browning finished the game 11-for-19 for 85 yards through the air and led the Warhawks in rushing with 28 yards on 11 carries (he gained 61 yards from scrimmage, but had 33 negative yards of rushing). In his first game on the defensive side of the ball, converted wide receiver Tim Taylor had a game-high nine tackles and a tackle for loss. Darius Prelow finished with four tackles, a sack and an interception while Caldwell had four tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss. FSU ate up a chunk of the second-quarter clock with a 17-play, eight minute drive that resulted in a 24-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins to increase the Seminole lead to 10-0. Florida State all but abandoned the run game during the drive until it reached the Warhawk 5-yard line as Manuel attempted a pass on 10 of the first 12 plays on the drive. Following ULM s fourth three-and-out of the first half, Greg Reid gave the Seminoles the ball on the ULM 17-yard line with a 30-yard punt return. However, Prelow intercepted Manuel in the end zone on the first play of the drive. Three plays quickly moved the ball 28 yards, but Browning s first-down pass was intercepted by Lamarcus Joyner at the Seminoles 16-yard line. FSU took advantage of the turnover as Manuel found a streaking Greg Dent for a 50-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-9 with just over a minute to play in the half to give the Seminoles a 17-0 lead at the break. Devonta Freeman pushed the FSU lead out to 24-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The Seminoles converted three third downs on the drive and on all three they needed at least five yards to keep the drive going. The Warhawks followed with their best offensive drive of the game as they marched down to the Florida State 28-yard line. Browning converted a pair of third downs to keep the drive alive; the first with his legs on a 10-yard run and the second with a 17-yard pass to Je Ron Hamm when the Warhawks needed 15 yards. However, the Seminoles dropped Browning for a 4-yard loss on fourth and inches to end the drive. Hopkins hit his second field goal of the game, this one from 23-yards out, and Rashad Greene threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Clint Trickett to cap the scoring. ULM (1-1) registered 10 tackles for loss, its most since 2008, in limiting Grambling State to only 144 yards of total offense. The Warhawks sacked Tigers quarterback D.J. Williams seven times, a team-best in the Sun Belt era. Defensive end Troy Evans led all ULM defenders with six tackles, including five for loss, and 2.0 sacks. The five stops behind the line of scrimmage were 0.5 TFL off Steve Foley s school record of 5.5 in a single game set in 1997. The Warhawk rushing attack was the catalyst offensively, accounting for 249 yards on 47 carries. Centarius Donald enjoyed a breakout performance on the ground, gaining a career-best 144 yards on only 12 carries, the first ULM 100-yard runner since Frank Goodin gained 108 yards against UL-Lafayette in 2008. Jyruss Edwards added 90 yards on 22 attempts to bookend the balanced rushing effort. ULM received the opening kickoff and drove the ball 37 yards in nine plays, but Kolton Browning s third-andseven pass attempt in the direction of Luther Ambrose was overthrown. Kicker Justin Manton s 40-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right to keep the game scoreless. The Warhawk defense forced Grambling State into a three-and-out on its first offensive drive. With the Tigers in punt formation, gunner Tim Taylor rushed untouched from the left side to block Fabian Carter s attempt. Khairi Usher recovered the ball at the Tigers 6-yard line. Two plays later, Browning connected with wideout Tavarese Maye on a 7-yard scoring toss. Grambling State (1-1) was again forced into a three-and-out its next possession, but recovered a muffed punt return by Tyler Cain in ULM territory. Williams moved the Tigers 46 yards in five plays, hooking up with Damia Jefferson on a 20-yard post route to tie the game at seven-all. After taking over at their own 37, the Warhawks drove 49 yards in 12 plays, highlighted by a 22-yard Donald romp through the middle of the Tigers secondary for a key first down. The drive stalled at the Grambling State 14, and Manton was called upon to attempt a 31-yard field goal, but the kick again missed wide to the right. Usher then made his second big play of the half, stepping in front of a Williams pass for his first career interception. His 32-yard return gave ULM the ball at the Grambling State 3-yard line. Cody Wells entered the game at quarterback to begin the next drive, and after two rushing attempts netted a total of two yards, connected with tight end Keavon Milton on a one-yard touchdown toss to push ULM in front 14-7. The reception was the fourth of Milton s career, all of which accounted for touchdowns. Milton later added his first non-touchdown catch during the third quarter. Both teams traded punts on their first two possessions of the second quarter. After the third drive of the frame came to a halt, the Warhawks received a second chance when Grambling State was flagged for running into punter Aaron Munoz. The Warhawk offense made the most of the good fortune, as Browning hooked up with Maye on a 42-yard strike down the seam two plays later to set up first-and-goal at the five. Edwards barreled his way over left tackle on second-and-goal to extend the ULM lead to 14, 21-7. Darius Prelow intercepted a Williams pass on third-and-eight on the Tigers next possession, returning the ball 20 yards to the Grambling State 45. The takeaway was the second of the game for the Warhawks, and the 45th in 23 games under defensive coordinator Troy Reffett. Donald then broke the game open for ULM, scampering up the middle 55 yards to pay dirt for his first career rushing touchdown, capping a three-play drive to extend the lead to 28-7 in favor of the home squad. The Warhawks concluded the scoring with a 13-play, 77-yard drive that took up 5:47 of game clock, as Mitchell Bailey carried the ball four yards off the left side for his first rushing touchdown, stretching the lead to 35-7. Browning finished the game 15-of-31 through the air for 161 yards, while Wells was 4-of-5 for 44 yards in limited duty. Maye led all receivers with a career-high eight receptions for 125 yards. For Grambling State, Williams completed 10-of-21 passes for 118 yards. Kenneth Batiste gained 32 yards on 11 carries to pace the running game. Game 3 ULM 17 #23 TCU 38 Sept. 17, 2011 Amon G. Carter Stadium (32,719) Ft. Worth, Texas FORT WORTH, TEXAS - ULM jumped out to an early first quarter lead over No. 23 TCU, but the Horned Frogs rallied with 24-unanswered points to defeat the Warhawks 38-17 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The Warhawks (1-2) marched 74 yards on nine plays after receiving the opening kickoff, highlighted by a 36-yard Jyruss Edwards rush down the left sideline. ULM moved the ball as far as the Horned Frogs 6-yard line before settling for a Justin Manton 23-yard field goal for the early 3-0 advantage. TCU responded quickly with Casey Pachall hooking up with Josh Boyce on a 68-yard touchdown strike to cap a five-play, 82-yard drive to take the lead 7-3. Cody Wells entered the game at quarterback to begin ULM s second drive and took to the air immediately. He completed all five of his pass attempts for 38 yards, with the longest coming on a 22-yard scoring post route to Brent Leonard on 4th-and-5 to vault the Warhawks back into the lead, 10-7. Leonard finished the game with a career-high 13 catches for 92 yards; his 13 receptions are the second most in ULM history just three behind Jackie Harris school record of 16 set in 1988. Kolton Browning finished 24-of-37 for 194 yards. The sophomore moved into eighth spot on the career completions list (284), ninth on the career total offense list (3,402) and 10th on the career touchdown passes list (20). The Horned Frogs (2-1, 1-0 MWC) countered quickly going 65 yards in nine plays aided by a defensive pass interference call on 3rd-and-8 that gave TCU new life at the Warhawks 20-yard line. Matthew Tucker pounded the ball across the goal line from five yards out for the 14-10 advantage. Browning, ULM s starter under center, returned to the game on ULM s next possession and put on an aerial display of his own as he hit Tavarese Maye on a 28-yard drag route to midfield. Maye was not finished on the drive. He laid out beautifully on a 37-yard Browning touchdown toss on a go-route to pay dirt to put the Warhawks back on top, 17-14. Maye finished with four catches for 72 yards. Pachall and the Horned Frogs would not be denied for long as they pieced together an impressive 12-play, 73-yard drive bookended by an Antoine Hicks 2-yard touchdown dive to go back in front 21-17. Pachall finished 15-of-23 for 204 yards. The Warhawks made the first significant defensive play of the contest with 10 seconds remaining in the first half. R.J. Young sprung loose from a block to force and recover a Pachall fumble at the TCU 32-yard line A 7-yard out route to Maye put the Warhawks in range for a field goal attempt, but Manton s 43-yard try sailed wide left sending TCU to the locker room with a 21-17 advantage. The Warhawks outgained the Horned Frogs 243-204 in the opening half and the two quarterbacks combined to complete 17 of their 20 pass attempts. TCU roared out of the gates to begin the second frame as Greg McCoy streaked 94 yards untouched down the sideline on the opening kickoff of the second half to give the Horned Frogs a 28-17 lead. A costly fumble by Edwards stopped ULM s opening drive of the half and gave the Horned Frogs the short field on the ULM 28-yard line. Six plays later a Tucker 1-yard plunge pushed TCU in front 35-17. Ross Evans closed out the scoring with a 28-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. Game 4 ULM 17 Iowa 45 Sept. 24, 2011 Kinnick Stadium (70,585) Iowa City, Iowa IOWA CITY, IOWA - Iowa built a 25-point halftime lead and went on to defeat ULM 45-17 in non-conference action at Kinnick Stadium. The game wraps up ULM s challenging non-conference schedule which also featured Florida State and TCU. The Hawkeyes (3-1) had success through the air as they passed for 273 yards on the afternoon. James Vandenberg completed 21-of-32 pass attempts for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Marvin McNutt led Iowa with seven catches for 100 yards and two scores. The Warhawks (1-3) gained a season-high 293 yards passing and finished with 352 yards of total offense on the afternoon. Kolton Browning completed 16-of-27 attempts for 131 yards and backup quarterback Cody Wells completed 13-of-17 attempts for 162 yards. Browning also led the Warhawks on the ground with 29 yards on eight carries. Browning passed Stan Humphries for seventh place on the all-time completions list (300) and Wendal Lowrey for the eighth spot in total offense (3,562 yards). Vandenberg capped a 9-play, 74-drive by the Hawkeyes to open the game with a 1-yard run on 4th-and goal. ULM responded on the ensuing possession moving 57 yards in 14 plays. Justin Manton s 43-yard field goal pulled the Warhawks to within four, 7-3. Vandenberg led the Hawkeye offense right back down the field and finished the drive with a 13-yard touchdown toss to McNutt in the corner of the end zone to give Iowa a 14-3 advantage. After the teams traded punts, the Hawkeyes hit pay dirt once more on Marcus Coker s 3-yard plunge pushed the lead to 21-3 early in the second quarter. ULM forced the game s only turnover with 5:33 left in the 2nd quarter. Isaiah Newsome recovered a fumble forced by Cameron Blakes at the Iowa 26-yard line. ULM moved the ball deep into Hawkeye territory, but a Browning pass to Brent Leonard on 4th down fell incomplete to halt the drive. Leonard led the Warhawks with eight catches for 74 yards one week after catching 13 passes at TCU. Tavarese Maye had seven catches for 53 yards and Anthony McCall hauled in four passes for 83 yards. Iowa made the most of the defensive stop as it covered 80 yards in eight plays to take a 28-3 lead into the half. Vandenberg found McNutt in the end zone from 17 yards out with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter. The ULM offense engineered its most effective series of the contest to start the second half. Browning punched the ball in on a 4-yard quarterback draw to cap a 13-play, 71-yard drive. The touchdown moved ULM within three scores, 28-10, with 9:35 to play in the third quarter. However, Iowa responded once again with another touchdown. Coker scored his second touchdown on the ground, this time on a 2-yard dive, to stretch the lead back to 25 points at 35-10. Coker finished with 113 yards on 18 carries; he is the first player to rush for over 100 yards against ULM this season. Wells took over the primary duties at quarterback late in the third quarter and efficiently moved ULM 76 yards. The drive was aided by a 25-yard completion on fourth down to Anthony McCall on a broken play. Maye carried the ball across the goal line from a yard out on an end-around to make the score 35-17. Iowa recovered the subsequent ULM onside kick attempt and needed only three plays to strike for the final touchdown of the game. Vandenberg found Keenan Davis wide open in the end zone on a 23-yard hook up to give the hosts a 42-17 advantage. The Hawkeyes would add a 23-yard field goal by Mike Meyer in the fourth quarter for the final points of the day.
