Kansas City is coming off a last-minute 20-17 loss vs. Philadelphia (8/27). The Chiefs offense piled up a preseasonhigh 168 rushing yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry in the contest. Meanwhile, Kansas City s defense recorded 5.0 sacks against the Eagles, the club s highest total in a preseason contest since producing 5.0 QB takedowns at St. Louis (8/28/03). The Chiefs also limited Philadelphia to fi ve of 17 (29.4%) on third down attempts and recorded the club s first INT of the preseason. Kansas City currently is second the NFL in rushing offense, averaging 150.0 ypg, an improvement of 40.3 ypg compared to the three-game mark from the 2009 preseason. The Chiefs are also averaging 23.4 more yards of total offense per game (311.7 to 288.3) compared to this point in 2009. The Chiefs rank fi fth in the league in yards per carry (4.6) and are tied for seventh in the NFL in fi rst downs per game (20.0). Defensively, the Chiefs rank in the NFL s top 10 in fi ve different categories. KC is fi fth in pass defense (173.7 ypg), fi fth in yards per play (4.4), sixth in total defense (277.0 ypg) and seventh in fi rst downs per game (16.0). On special teams, the Chiefs are averaging 8.2 more yards per kickoff return (27.2 to 19.0) compared to the three-game mark in 2009, a fi gure that ranks eighth in the NFL. Green Bay has posted a 2-1 record in the preseason after fi nishing the 2009 season with an 11-5 mark. QB Aaron Rodgers returns in 2010 after compiling a 103.2 passer rating in 2009. RB Ryan Grant led the club with 1,253 rushing yards a year ago, while CB Charles Woodson was named the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. All NFL clubs are required to trim their rosters to 75 players on Tuesday, August 31st. Thursday s game is one fi nal opportunity to evaluate the squad before the NFL s mandatory cutdown to 53 players on Saturday, September 4th. Monday Night Football returns to Kansas City next week when the Chiefs host San Diego (9/13) at 9:15 PM (CT) in front of a national primetime TV audience. VS. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - TODD HALEY Todd Haley was named the 11th head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs on February 6, 2009 and begins his second year leading the Chiefs. Haley enters his 16th season in the NFL in 2010 and his 14th season as an NFL coach after beginning his career as a scouting assistant with the N.Y. Jets in 95. Haley joined the Chiefs after a two-year stint as Arizona s offensive coordinator (2007-08), helping the Cardinals reach Super Bowl XLIII as the club won its first division title since 75. Under Haley s direction, the Cardinals ranked third in the league in scoring as Arizona registered a franchise-record 427 points in 2008. The Cardinals also threw a team-record 32 TD passes in 2007. Haley has won division titles with four different NFL teams. He served as passing game coordinator/wrs coach under Bill Parcells with Dallas (2004-06) after beginning his career under Parcells with the N.Y. Jets ( 97-00). He also served as WRs coach with Chicago (2001-03). Born on February 28, 1967, Haley grew up in Upper St. Clair, PA. He is the son of longtime NFL personnel executive Dick Haley, who helped build the Steelers Super Bowl teams of the 70s. A 91 graduate of the University of North Florida, he was the recipient of that school s 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award. He enters his 18th season as an NFL coach and his fifth campaign as a head coach. McCarthy has guided the Packers to two playoff appearances. In 2009, Green Bay finished with a 11-5 record and earned a Wild Card berth in the playoffs. The Packers have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in total offense in each of McCarthy s four seasons with the club. He was named the Motorola Coach of the Year, matched a Packers franchise record with 13 victories and claimed the NFC North title in 2007. McCarthy previously served as an NFL assistant for 13 years, including six seasons as offensive coordinator in San Francisco (2005) and New Orleans (2000-04). Prior to joining the 49ers, McCarthy served as the QBs coach at Green Bay for one season ( 99). Born November 10, 1963 in Pittsburgh, PA, McCarthy worked as the Chiefs QBs coach ( 95-98) after originally joining Kansas City as the club s offensive quality control coach ( 93-94). McCarthy began his coaching career at Fort Hays State ( 87-88). He then took a position at Pitt ( 89-92) before venturing to the NFL. He is a graduate of Baker (KS) University and was enshrined in that school s Hall of Fame this season.
